Actor Kevin Spacey apologizes after accusations of sexual advances toward teenage actor

Actor Anthony Rapp alleged over the weekend that Hollywood star Kevin Spacey made sexual advances toward him in 1986, when Rapp was 14 years old. Spacey was 26 at the time.

In a story published Sunday, Rapp told Buzzfeed that he was compelled to tell his story after the growing allegations against film producer Harvey Weinstein opened up the conversation about sexual misconduct in the entertainment industry.

What's the story?

Rapp, now 46, said the misconduct happened during his role in the Broadway run of "Precious Sons." At the same time, Spacey was acting in his breakout role in a revival of "Long Day's Journey Into Night." Both shows were having a good run and the casts had parties together to celebrate their successes. It was at one of those parties that Spacey reportedly befriended the child actor.

"It was at one of those events where I met Kevin Spacey for the first time," Rapp told Buzzfeed.

At an after-party in New York, Spacey invited Rapp to another "party he was hosting a few days later at his Manhattan apartment," Buzzfeed reported.

Rapp showed up to the party alone and "quickly noticed he was the only nonadult there" but said he wasn't concerned. He added he didn't want to open up criticisms about his late-mother's parenting and allowing him to attend the party at Spacey's apartment and said it was a different era and there didn't seem to be a cause for concern at the time.

Rapp said he got bored during the party and wandered into Spacey's bedroom where he sat on the bed watching television. Long after midnight, when everyone had left the party, Spacey walked into the room, the actor told Buzzfeed.

“My memory was that I thought, 'Oh, everybody's gone. Well, yeah, I should probably go home,'” Rapp said.  Spacey, he recalled to Buzzfeed, “sort of stood in the doorway, kind of swaying. My impression when he came in the room was that he was drunk.” Rapp doesn't remember Spacey saying anything to him. Instead, Rapp said, “He picked me up like a groom picks up the bride over the threshold. But I don't, like, squirm away initially, because I'm like, 'What's going on?' And then he lays down on top of me.”

“He was trying to seduce me,” Rapp said. “I don't know if I would have used that language. But I was aware that he was trying to get with me sexually.”

After a short time, Rapp said he was able to "squirm away" from Spacey and left the apartment, CNN reported.

How did Kevin Spacey respond to the allegations?

Spacey, now 58, responded on Twitter to the allegations after the story was published. He did not respond to Buzzfeed's inquiries prior to publication, according to the story.

In a Twitter response to the sexual misconduct allegations by Rapp, Spacey responded that he is "beyond horrified" and that he has no memory of the encounter.

Spacey's personal life has long been questioned, and he's been adamant about keeping his personal life "private," the New York Times reported.

As the host of this year's Tony Awards, the Oscar award-winning actor poked fun at the accusations of his alleged homosexuality, People reported.

Spacey also admitted to having relationships with men and women over the years and that he is choosing "now to live as a gay man."

What did Rapp say in his public statement after the story was published?

"I came forward with my story, standing on the shoulders of the many courageous women and men who have been speaking out, to shine a light and hopefully make a difference, as they have done for me. Everything I wanted to say about my experience is in that article, and I have no further comment about it at this time."
