Third accuser comes out against John Conyers as calls strengthen for his resignation

Representative John Conyers has been hit with a third allegation of harassment by a woman who spoke to the Washington Post. Calls for his resignation have been growing, and are sure to strengthen on the news.

Who is the third accuser?

Melanie Sloan, a high-profile Washington lawyer, says that Conyers harassed and verbally abused her in the 1990s. She told the Washington Post that the harassment led to her losing her job and her attempts to report him were ignored.

“There was nothing I could do to stop it,” Melanie Sloan told the Post. “Not going to leadership, not going to my boss, not going to a women’s group, not going to a reporter. I was dismissed and told I must be mentally unstable.”

Sloan did not accuse Conyers of sexual harassment, but said that he yelled at and berated her and criticized her appearance.

Has Conyers responded to the third accusation?

Conyers' lawyer said they would address the accusations after Thanksgiving, but denied any wrongdoing in relation to Sloan. “Representative Conyers has never done anything inappropriate to Melanie Sloan,” he said.

Are Democrats calling for Conyers to resign?

While some are still hedging their bets and saying the accusations need to be proven first, some are already demanding his resignation. Conyers' House colleague Rep. Kathleen Rice (D-N.Y.) was the first Democrat to demand he resign, while his hometown newspaper has also demanded the 88-year-old step down.

Buzzfeed first broke the story that Conyers had settled a sexual harassment claim for $27,000, although the Democrat denies any wrongdoing in the matter.

The House Ethics Committee is investigating Conyers over the settlement.
