Eric Holder and James Comey hit back at Trump after the president criticizes the FBI

Former Attorney General Eric Holder and former FBI Director James Comey hit back at President Donald Trump after he criticized the FBI over the weekend.

Trump declared Sunday on Twitter that the FBI’s reputation is in “tatters” following Comey’s tenure as its leader. Trump's tweet followed the report that a top FBI agent who worked on the Hillary Clinton email investigation was dismissed from a supervisory role in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation over anti-Trump bias.

In a separate tweet, Trump questioned why former national security adviser Michael Flynn’s “life is destroyed” because he lied to the FBI, yet Clinton got off scott-free from her private email scandal. The president wondered if there is a “double standard” or if the system is “rigged."

How did Comey and Holder respond?

In response to Trump, Holder repudiated Trump’s claim about the FBI’s reputation by claiming the bureau has more "integrity and honesty” than the current White House:

Meanwhile, Comey quoted himself:

Did anyone else say anything?

Yes. Sally Yates, who was acting attorney general for the first 10 days of Trump’s administration, slammed Trump on Twitter:

FBI Agents Association president Thomas O’Connor also released the following statement:

Every day, FBI Special Agents put their lives on the line to protect the American public from national security and criminal threats. Agents perform these duties with unwavering integrity and professionalism and a focus on complying with the law and the Constitution.

This is why the FBI continues to be the premier law enforcement agency in the world. FBI Agents are dedicated to their mission; suggesting otherwise is simply false.
