Body cam video shows former Oklahoma legislator caught in hotel with teenage boy

The Moore Police Department released body camera footage Monday of former Oklahoma Republican State Senator Ralph Shortey getting caught in a hotel room with an underage boy back in March.

Shortey pleaded guilty last week to federal child sex trafficking charges.

The officers didn’t know at the time that Shortey was a state senator. They showed up at the hotel for a welfare check after a call from the teenager’s father.

The teenager answered the door first (which is not shown on the video). Shortey was hiding behind the door. When he came out, he was wearing a T-shirt with a reference to the Bible verse Ephesians 5:22, with a picture of a sandwich and a caption “now go make me a sandwich."

Ephesians 5:22 says “Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.”

Shortey initially tried to challenge the officers’ claim that the boy was 17 years old.

“What sense does it make, me lying to you?” one of the officers said. “But listen, whatever you’re doing, it’s a bad [expletive] idea. Does that make sense to you? Getting high, with a young kid, is a bad idea. No matter if they’re 17 or 20. It’s a bad idea. You understand what I’m saying?”

Police found marijuana, condoms and lotion in the Shortey's backpack in the room. He faces 10 years to life in prison.
