Meghan McCain castigates Comey over interview: ‘He clearly loves the media’

"The View" co-host Meghan McCain blasted former FBI Director James Comey on Monday's episode of the gabfest. McCain indicated that his latest book and televised interview about President Donald Trump is beneath him and the office of the FBI.

You can read the biggest takeaways from Comey's interview with George Stephanopoulos, which aired Sunday night, here.

What did McCain say?

The show kicked off with the hosts questioning Comey's motivations behind writing the tell-all book itself, "A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership."

While some of the show's co-hosts thought that Comey's book was credible and that his efforts to publicize the book via interviews were honorable, McCain took issue with Comey's apparent agenda and made no bones about getting that point across.

"The problem with James Comey is he can’t decide what he is," McCain said. "Is he this Boy Scout defending the FBI … or is he a media personality and a highly political animal?"

McCain went on to zero in on the unverified stories Comey has talked about — specifically the salacious ones in the Steele dossier.

"We're trying to get to the bottom of what really happened here, if there is any criminal activity with Russia," McCain added. "He's talking about every decision with Hillary Clinton being made because of politics. He talks about expecting her to win the election — candidates winning elections should make no difference in your decision as the head of the FBI whatsoever."

McCain went on to detail some of the day's headlines that have covered Comey's book and subsequent media blitz, which varied from calling the former FBI director a major disappointment to the smartest man alive.

“This just seems like he is settling scores,” McCain explained.

"[Comey] clearly loves the media," she added. "And that’s fine if you want to do what we do. But it’s not if you are the head of the FBI."
