Analyst: Here’s a way to weaken North Korea’s dictatorship from within -- and it's worked before

Heritage Foundation policy analyst Olivia Enos joined “The Morning Blaze with Doc Thompson” to talk about human rights abuses in North Korea and what other countries can do to help.

The East Asian nation has been a growing threat as Kim Jong Un attempts to intimidate the U.S. by threatening its allies and conducting multiple missile tests in recent weeks. But the bigger picture is North Korea’s complete disregard for human rights, Enos explained.

Under dictator Kim Jong Un’s leadership, North Korea has long starved its own people and reportedly has around 200,000 people living in conditions similar to the concentration camps of Nazi Germany. North Korea denies that these prison camps exist, but the United Nations has been gathering information based on satellite imagery and testimony from the few prisoners who have been able to escape.

Part of the problem is that North Korea is so closed that the rest of the world doesn’t see what’s going on and North Korean themselves believe their government’s propaganda.

“You essentially don’t see pictures coming out of North Korea in the same way that maybe you see pictures of suffering children in Syria and elsewhere,” Enos said.

The country’s human rights abuses have been difficult to document because North Korea is so guarded. Infiltrating the country to bring information from the outside world to starving North Koreans is the best way to undermine its power, Enos asserted.
