Does society decide your gender?

During a discussion about sex-reassignment surgery and hormone treatments of children, Mike Slater declared Saturday on "The Mike Slater Show": "We are doing something in our society today that is wrong, and it's based off bad science."

He paraphrased a Yale University doctor who said that 10 years ago this would be grounds for malpractice. And this doctor is actually for childhood reassignment.

Mike wondered why we no longer wait until someone is a legal adult to decide what gender they truly are. He cited a case study done by psychologist Dr. John Money in the 1960s and '70s. Money believed that gender is learned and is established by society. He talked a family into changing their baby's gender because of a botched circumcision. It is seldom discussed is how horrible that advice turned out.
