Leading French presidential candidate's personal life would be scandalous in the States
April 25, 2017
As France goes through their contentious presidential election, Americans are being treated to stories about the candidates that barely make the French blink, but would be on the news every night in the United States. Today on "Pure Opelka," Mike Opelka discussed the leading candidate in polls, 39-year-old Emmanuel Macron, and his 64-year-old wife.
While there is nothing inherently wrong with a December/May romance, Brigitte Trogneux was a married and had three children when she met Macron, who at the time was her 16-year-old student. By the time he was 17, he had promised her he would marry her. Other versions of their tale give their first kiss when Macron was only 15.
They tied the knot in 2007 when he was 29.
"Don't you think this would be a gigantic story here in America?" Mike asked. He contrasted the way Americans react to the difference in age between President Donald Trump and his wife, Melania, who was at least an adult when they met.
"This is the most perfect French thing I ever read," Mike remarked. And the French people appear to have no problem with it, as they gave Macron a 2.7% lead in the runoff vote over opponent Marine Le Pen last Sunday.
