Scarlett Johansson doesn’t understand relationships, at all

"I think the idea of marriage is very romantic; it’s a beautiful idea, and the practice of it can be a very beautiful thing. I don’t think it’s natural to be a monogamous person. I might be skewered for that, but I think it’s work. It’s a lot of work. And the fact that it is such work for so many people—for everyone—the fact of that proves that it is not a natural thing." – Scarlett Johansson, Playboy Magazine, February 14, 2017

I'm afraid ScarJo is a little confused.

She thinks that because something is difficult and requires hard work, it must not be "natural." Maybe the word she was really looking for was "effortless." If this is what she meant, then yes, monogamy would not fit into that category. Picking one person and sticking with them is not effortless, but so what? Most people understand that relationships necessarily require a great deal of work. Why don't you?

The difficulty of a task does not determine how ‘natural’ it is for us to do. The issue here was her reasoning. Hard work = unnatural. How does that make sense? Physical labor is hard work, but who would consider that unnatural? Getting along with your fellow man is hard work, but who would consider that unnatural? Learning a new language is hard work, but who would consider that unnatural?

As I said in the podcast above, if she had said that monogamy has been shown to negatively affect the human brain or cardiovascular system, I would approach it more scientifically and perhaps argue that it's still worth it to find someone special. However, she has chosen to base her argument around effort, and that falls flat on its face.

Monogamy is a very natural pursuit for humanity.

At least she acknowledged marriage is a beautiful thing…
