Why is America responsible for fixing Syria?

The question on Rabbi Daniel Lapin's mind on Saturday's episode of "Rabbi Daniel Lapin" was why it’s suddenly America’s job to intervene when foreign governments murder their own people.

“Things have dramatically changed in America. … All of a sudden, everybody’s horrible problems are our problems,” he said.

Rabbi Lapin details some specific examples from US history when other countries slaughtered their own people, but America didn’t intervene. When Joseph Stalin murdered millions of Russians, President Harry Truman didn’t set down a “red line.” Nor did President Bill Clinton act in 1992 when nearly a million Tutsi people were killed in the Rwandan genocide.

Rabbi Lapin said compassion is understandable, but the government can’t retaliate every time another nation commits atrocities. He asked why the U.S. is responsible when Syria murders civilians with chemical weapons.

“Don’t get me wrong; I’m compassionate about it. If you want to do something about it as a private individual, you want to raise some money, come to me for a contribution. But that’s very different from saying the U.S. government should use tax money, American blood, and, at the same time, be distracted from all of the things that it should be doing because it’s trying to save the Syrians.”
