‘The Country Deserves Better’: GOP Governor Calls for Dark Horse to Come Out of the Convention

Maine GOP Governor Slams Republican Primary Field

Maine’s longtime GOP U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe have been known to at times vote out of step with their fellow Republicans in Washington. At this weekend‘s NGA conference in the district Maine’s Republican Governor Paul LePage was also unafraid to criticize his own party, calling out the field of Republican presidential candidates and pushing for a “fresh face” to challenge President Obama in November. The Maine Sunday Telegram reports on what the governor had to say about national party politics and the way his own state party handled what has been a sloppy caucus:

“LePage told reporters at the National Governors Association meeting here that he was hoping for a floor fight at the Republican National Convention in Tampa this summer.

The outspoken Mainer also criticized the state’s GOP for how it botched the much-maligned presidential caucuses earlier this month.

Even as Republicans Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum compete for front-runner status with a win in Tuesday’s Michigan primary, LePage said the entire field of GOP candidates is damaged goods because they have spent too much time bashing each other.

‘I would love to see a good old-fashioned convention and a dark horse come out and do it in the fall,’ he said.

LePage said he didn’t have a particular alternative candidate in mind.”

LePage was elected governor in 2010 after previously serving eight years as mayor of Waterville. LePage was supported the Tea Party and won the election with 38.1 percent of the vote, followed by independent Eliot cutler with 36.7 percent.

The Telegram notes that Lepage said the current GOP candidates broke Ronald Reagan’s rule about not speaking ill of a fellow Republican and “have injured themselves and injured the party” with their attacks on each other.

“‘The candidates in this primary have beat themselves up so badly it would be nice to have a fresh face that we all could say, ‘Okay.’ The country deserves better than having people stand up and keep criticizing each other.’”

While recent polling suggest that Republicans and GOP-leaning independents may disagree with LePage in regards to the convention, as a USA Today-Gallup Poll found last week that 66 percent of those surveyed say they wanted to see one of the current four candidates win enough delegates to secure the nomination ahead of the convention, POLITICO notes that the northern Republican is only pointing out the well known metaphorical elephant in the room among party leaders:

“He’s the first major public official to say what countless Republican insiders are murmuring in private: that the party might be better off with a wild-card candidate selected in August rather than one of the damaged options they already have.

‘It’s been too messy. I just believe we ought to go to the convention and pick a fresh face,’ LePage said. ‘They beat themselves up so badly that I’d think it’d be nice to have a fresh face.’”

Mitt Romney was declared the winner of the weeklong non-binding Maine caucuses February 11 by the Maine GOP, however the decision was criticized for it did not include a county and several communities who had their caucuses postponed. Following votes in Washington County, Romney remained the narrow winner over Ron Paul. LePage told POLITICO he’s not a fan of the caucus process and would prefer to see a primary in the future.

Homeless people do not like string beans or apple sauce, they prefer shrimp scampi, crab cakes, a nice bottle of Cabernet, walnut brownies with vanilla ice cream and hot fudge sauce, a port finish and down filled comforters to flop into afterwards — as long as we’re wishing, Gov’nor.

Two things – sounds like the Maine Tea Party needs to find a new Governor and to O Yee of little faith – I remember in the Mid 80′s – just about this time in the process when a Conservative Candidate by the name of Reagan step up – he was not connected to the Elite Ruling Class and he was just what America needed.

I believe we have a Candidate like that now and the GOP Elites are not very happy but America will be glad.

I’m a fan of Reagan; however, I don’t know if I agree with that “rule” they’re always repeating. I guess I’m very weird, but I don’t see how this is so terrible – I, for one, want to hear what they have to say about them (if true). The only thing I‘m against of course is anything that’s just misleading, not really true, taken out of context type stuff. I’m sure the Dems will have done their homework about what to bombard the candidate with – it doesn‘t matter whether it’s said now or not – they‘re going to do it anyway and it’s best they handle it now.
As for the candidates – don’t agree with that either. No, I don’t see my “perfect one”, but I do know any of them are not even a little bit close to the Obama regime. They are a different “breed” with different goals altogether. They’ve been ideologues for the Marxist/Socialist “utopian” plan since their youth – to get rid of the Constitution, free market, etc. Not quite the same with our candidates. They have their faults but they are pro-Constitution, freedom, capitalism, etc. Plus they’ll have Congress to deal with also. Need to concentrate on getting majority of Consvs. in the Senate.
But……if Sarah Palin comes in by some miracle…..my vote goes to HER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

However, we all know that Obama has MILLIONS and MILLIONS to spend on his campaign, not to mention, most of the media in his pocket. And as Lenin said, “If you tell a lie often enough, people will believe it is the truth.” (”And the people exchanged THE Truth of God for THE lie, and the Lord gave them over to their reprobate minds to do that which ought not to be done.”

Now that was a joke, though you may not take it that way. And please don’t get me wrong, I like Sarah, but if she were to step in now it would be the biggest joke ever perpetrated on the party, even bigger than McCain’s nomination. If you weren’t ready by November last year to throw your hat into the ring, then please keep it on. This process has been brutal, but their won‘t be a surprise pile of bones in anyone’s closet, and by the time we have made up our minds, all of these issues between our own candidates will be yesterday’s news, and Obama will be soundly defeated by his own words, his own choices and decisions, and his own failed ideologies. Hi, this is exactly what is being talked about. It is fair game to present a candidates record, but then you have some who throw out spin about a candidates beliefs. Paul is not for Iran getting a nuclear weapon and is not against going to war with Iran if they are a threat and the people, through Congress, declares war against them. If “We the People” decided that Iran was a threat to us, and Congress declared war, Paul would go into Iran and take them out the right way, Constitutionally. A clear plan going in with a clear objective, then getting out with no money toward them to build their nation back. If America would have followed the Constitution in every war, and left the nation building to the country we fought, countries would have second thoughts about pushing us towards war. Stop listening to the media.

Here’s the dirtiest secret of all: It’s not a “fossil” fuel, and the earth itself replenishes the supply! This has already been proven. Google “abotic oil”, and don’t be afraid to learn something new.

Concerning Newt, he the only one running who’s laid out a solid vision and plan for the country. He’s the only one running who would make Obama sound ridiculous in the debates. Newt Gingrich brought the country welfare reform and a balanced budget. Mitt Romney brought the country the model for Obamacare. Look, I‘ll vote for Romney when he’s the nominee, but I will hold my nose and do it realizing he has no chance to win.

This is pathetic. First, the idea, back in 2011, was that if Ron Paul didn’t get the nominee this year, he’d then run as a third-party candidate… but Ron Paul said that was not his intent, and in any event, such action would ‘split the vote and insure Obama gets another four years’. He was castigated for it.

Now, you have the GOP itself calling for a new candidate, and Jon Huntsman out there making noises about there needing to be a third party.

So it was shameful for Ron Paul to think in that direction, but now that it’s someone else, hey it might not be a bad idea after all….

    Several thoughts here.
The in-fighting between candidates is a double-edged sword. Look at NoBama and Hellery and their fights – pretty brutal. Having these confrontations is great practice for the onslaught to come from the lying progressives. By in-fighting the candidates don’t have to be responsible to communicate to us how they will correct the direction this country is on. “Just elect me, I’m prettier.” There are serious problems in play that aren’t even being discussed. Religion seems to be the issue lately. How is religion going to move this country back in the correct direction? Pray alot that Fanny and Freddie just disappear?? Where are the definitive plans?
If the convention nominated someone like a Rubio, or someone else, it would put the Libbies on their heels, scrambling to get garbage on the newbie. All that work thrown out, go back to go, and don’t collect $200.00.
I personally think these possible candidates that didn’t come forward for whatever reason, while this ship sinks, are selfish, and self-serving chickens.
Why aren’t they taking apart Keystone decisions and showing how it was political cronyism. Or take apart how NoBama used the monies available to him as president to give earmarks to buy off the senators and congressmen to pass NoBamaCAIR? Many issues just not covered because the Republicans in charge are clueless and still in the Dark Ages. All the facts and figures have already been collated, they just need to do their homework.

The Jedi Mind Trick is to make you forget the REAL Ron Paul and his associates past and present. Like Obama and his associations with Rearend Wright and Bill Ayers…

You don‘t even believe he’s a racist. Come on admit it.

New Ron Paul supporters like you JUST and many others who are first encountering Libertarian ideas through the Ron Paul Revolution, deserve a far more frank explanation than the campaign has as yet provided of how Ron Paul’s name ended up atop so many ugly words. Ron Paul may not be a racist, but he became complicit in a strategy of pandering to racists and taking “moral responsibility” for that now means more than just uttering the phrase. It means openly grappling with his own past… acknowledging who said what, and why? His lame attempts at this recently, just as before have only continued to damage his reputation.

Arguing with Paulbots reminds me of the old, unattributed quote…..”I would have an argument of wits with you, but I don’t argue with unarmed people.” RP’s foreign policy makes as much sense as opening a pig farm in Saudi Arabia.

The Republican establishment is starting to beat the drums, just as predicted. It is time to vote them out!
