‘What Kind of Idiot Makes That Kind of Statement?’: Tea Partier Falsely Linked to Colo. Killings Slams ABC

In the initial reporting of the horrifying “Dark Knight” shooting, ABC rushed to report that a Jim Holmes– a name similar to that of the alleged shooter– was a member of a local Tea Party.

“There’s a Jim Holmes of Aurora, Colorado, page on the Colorado Tea party site as well, talking about him joining the Tea Party last year,” Ross said. “Now, we don’t know if this is the same Jim Holmes. But it’s Jim Holmes of Aurora, Colorado,” Brian Ross told George Stephanopoulos on “Good Morning America.”

The connection was wholly unverified, and ABC was forced to issue what some have deemed a “non-apology” retraction.

Now the Tea Party-affiliated Jim Holmes is speaking out, and he isn’t pleased.

Based on the fact that he is a member of a local Tea Party, there is a strong chance he was already skeptical of the “mainstream” media.  Now, at least ABC has seemingly lost any credibility whatsoever in his eyes.

“What kind of idiot makes that kind of statement?” Holmes told The Daily Caller.

“Really, seriously, how do we take a journalist seriously when it’s pretty clear they really haven’t done any sort of check on their facts?”

Unlike the alleged shooter– a 24-year-old lunatic– this Holmes is reportedly a 52-year-old former law enforcement officer.

The Daily Caller, which interviewed Holmes on Friday, continues:

Holmes told TheDC that ABC News didn’t call him before going to air and he still hasn’t heard from them or received a direct apology.  “No, not a thing,” he said.

“They could’ve contacted me through the Tea Party Patriots website,” said Holmes, who said he only recently joined the group and started attending lectures.

Recalling his day, Holmes said his wife first told him about the movie theater shooting Friday morning. He then received a text from a friend telling him that he was being mentioned on the news.

After the calls started pouring in, Holmes unplugged his home phone. He wanted to learn more about what was being said about him before commenting to anyone, he said. “I was getting called from area codes I just don’t get.”

“And I don’t anticipate plugging my phone in for a couple of days,” he said.

His message to reporters: “I do understand what making a mistake means… But is it really worth the person’s reputation, the potential ruining of the person’s reputation?” [Emphasis added]

Holmes added that, based on his experience in law enforcement, he knows you should “never, ever, ever bring somebody’s name or association into an accusation into the public eye” until you know the truth.

ABC appears to have missed that message.

UPDATE:

Politico is reporting that Brian Ross will continue covering the Colorado shooting for ABC, despite his wildly inaccurate on-air speculation.

I consider Perots campaign an early “tea party” – a REJECTION of the republican/democrat lawlessness.       People have to start suing msm for their defamation of character. Why did Brian Ross even look at the Tea Party members???? He was hoping it would be one of them just like the rest of the msm. From what I’ve seen, this guy was an OWS leader in San Diego. If I’m wrong, apologies. I guarantee you I looked harder at the info that Brian Ross did. Msm does not deliver the product they claim to deliver. It‘s like a life insurance agent selling a policy that won’t pay for a myriad of reasons that the consumer is unaware of. (That’s not to say that life ins. agents are corrupt because it is a good product, as long as there is a meeting of the minds on what it delivers). The msm claims objectivity, but doesn’t deliver. Zimmerman should be suing nbc for the editing of the tapes and the way they tried to ‘mold’ the story. The Lacross players from Duke should have sued them, the Justice Brothers; sharpton and jackson, for what they did. The screw up and move on to the next agenda without concern for the truth. No apologies. It’s BS.

      Ahhh…… how refreshing are your words of advice. I always find it amusing when someone feels compelled to make comments regarding Beck and his beliefs when they admittedly haven’t read, listened, or watched anything he has to say. It’s so hard to deny what you say about Beck considering your level of credibility on the subject matter. To accuse Beck of…..what was it……ohh yea…”FAKE-conservative/libertarian propaganda,” without knowing anything about what he really believes is hilarious. It’s hard taking advice from people who refuse to educate themselves. Especially, those who claim to refute “crap” so easily. I’ll be sure to work on it though.

      Hey, what kind of idiot like Andrew Brietbart posts videos of someone like Shirley Sherrod very selectively edited to suggest she was saying the EXACT OPPOSITE of what she was actually saying. Of course this website, FOX, and other networks went with the slanderously edited video and she was fired from her job by the Obama administration.

      When the full video was seen, Brietbart’s lack of conscience and deliberate falsification were exposed.

      Why wasn’t he sued? Well, he was and he would have lost. A good person and government servant was giving an inspirational story of overcoming prejudice and helping a white farmer. And Brietbart edited and twisted the story to make it look like the opposite, and destroyed this good Americans job and life. May he rest in peace. But he pioneered a new and despicable strategy carried on now James O’Keefe, the felon.

      I live in Maine and the only corrupt and dirty going on up here is the Left and how they have shot down every attempt for voter ID and to undermine Parents authority of their children. I would think that voter ID checks would be right up a socialists view so they can see how each person would vote. I just tired of the dead and no residents voting in Maine.

      Conservative… Bill of Rights is the response to ratifying the Constitution 1787. Several colonies are over 100 years old at that time. Given a generation being born every 16…20 years, many are fifth generation by the time the Constitution is ratified.

      13th and 14th amendments are aimed at black Americans. Black Americans were voters in 5 states when the Constitution was signed. The issue of black American citizenship is in the remaining 8 states.       Brother W, I feel your pain, many do not understand, they follow these fox people blindly Beck is still on fox radio where I live, I do like Beck to a point but where he supports people like Romney and before that it was Rick S it does not make sense, he does not practice what he preaches to claim you are a constitutionalist and support these two, if you are a constitutionalist as Beck claims it does not make sense, I will continue to watch the blaze site its better than MSM most of the time but others I enjoy are the dailypaul, the only thing I can figure about Beck backing these rinos is that he still gets paid by or is associated with fox through radio, other than that it makes no sense to me as these two do not come even close to keeping within the realms of the constitution, I know people on this site don’t want to believe this and would follow him blindly off a cliff if he asked them too, instead of doing the research for them self’s and having their own thought process about anything, that’s just my thoughts you can argue all you want, I will not reply these are my own thoughts as you all have your own, may God bless us and this Country we live in.

      You’re right! The tendency of ABC, MSNBC etc to jump in wirh aaaumptions as opposed to facts is becoing legendary. Any event qualifies and if they can’t twist it to their point of view they make it fit – i.e. editing the 911 tapes on George Zimmerman to make it appear he was a racist and went out to kill Trevon. They show a 5 year old picture of Trevon to make it appear that Zimmermann attacked a child.
      They are twisting facts to support their views and smear those they disagree with. Thats not journalism thats lying.
      The poor man should sue Brian Williams, Good Morning America, ABC News and their Parent Corp for $50,000,000.

      You hit the nail on the head. That was not an “oops” moment for Brian Ross. I’m sure the TEA party website was the first place he went when he got a name and was thrilled when he thought he could pin something on conservatives. I’m tired of it and hope the TEA party Mr. Holmes hires a hot shot lawyer who will stand up to ABC. I’d contribute to his defense fund.
