1 Dead, 11 Shot at Ohio Frat House

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) — A shooting at a fraternity house killed one student and injured 11 people, including six students, just north of the Youngstown State University campus, authorities said Sunday.

The shooting happened during a party early Sunday and no arrests have been made, but police have at least one suspect, Youngstown police Lt. Franklin Palmer said.

The Mahoning County coroner’s office identified the dead student as 25-year-old Jamail E. Johnson. He was shot once in the head and multiple times on his hips and legs, and an autopsy is planned for Monday, said Dr. Joseph Or, a forensic pathologist with the coroner’s office.

Information on the identities and conditions of the injured was not immediately available.

The school in northeast Ohio said in a statement that YSU President Cynthia Anderson met students and their families as the hospital this morning and called it “a sad day for the YSU family.”

The shooting happened at a two-story brick house in a neighborhood of once-elegant homes, many of which are now boarded up. No one answered a knock at the door Sunday afternoon.

A neighbor, Rodger Brown, 54, said the house and an adjacent home with Greek lettering indicating a fraternity often have parties on Friday and Saturday nights but had caused no problems in the neighborhood.

“It’s a nice, quiet neighborhood,” he said. Brown said men living in the house were friendly to him and once offered him a beer and a ride as he walked home last fall.

Associated Press writers Kantele Franko in Columbus, Ohio, and Sofia Mannos in Washington contributed to this report.

These kind of shootings happen all the time. Usually black on black but no one except locals pay any attention to it. I guess they are just not newsworthy nationally unless some famous or wealthy or politically connected white person gets shot, then they rave about gun control, or how evil and crazy white people are. News media in this country is a joke.

I was able to determine that the Fraternity appears to be Omega Phi Psi which is a black fraternity. I am not equating race to why there was a shooting (there was a gang related stabbing at my Fraternity), but why it was not reported. I was able to determine the Fraternity based on a picture posted of Jamil Johnson on his Facebook (black fraternities use distinctive hand gestures, and Jamil is making the sign of the Omegas and he is standing in front of a crude crest of this house). I then confirmed it by looking up the Youngstown chapter on the Omerga Phi Psi site and Jamil Johnson was listed as the recorder of the chapter. Jamil was the poor guy that was shot. Come on media do your job. Often times people who do not belong try to gain entrance to the party and this is often when fights break out. I would bet that a majority of violence that happens at Fraternity parties is between “townies” and the members. A lot of times now the “townies” are not the fun loving guys from “Breaking Away” but gang members.

What Fraternity was involved? Why is it not named? If the fraternity is unnamed in all articles, why title the articles with the word Fraternity? Would the fraternity name give more meaning to the story? Is this a real fraternity associated with the university or just a group of people who call themselves a “fraternity”? Crappy reporting.

Want to know why the fraternity isn’t name? Wanna know why gun control isn‘t being mentioned yet about this incident and why we probably won’t hear anything about this on the national news? Let the first name of the victim, Jamail, be a clue to why.

Yep, wasn’t even in the house “with the letters” on it. It was in the house across the street from it. I suppose it is proximity in order to paint student orgs. as unruly…

Emotions, alcohol and firearms should never be mixed. My money is on the firearm being illegal to begin with, but that’s my knee jerk response. We will know more by Tuesday and then we can analyze this more.
Don‘t challenge me for some other murderous individual’s act. Legal gun owners are not guilty by association.

First off, the party occurred OFF campus and can not be called a sanctioned Fraternity party as it was unofficial. I am sorry for the families and kids. This is just as likely to occur at a night club or even a picnic. Booze, TEMPTERS, and any weapons don’t mix not just guns. I have seen bottles, pool sticks, chairs, and knives which also can kill.

I’ve tapped plenty of kegs in my time. Floated a few as well. I’ve owned plenty of guns in my time. I had them in my possession while in the process of tapping and floating said kegs. Never did I feel a need to kill anyone, or even display a weapon. Your post only lends credence to the idiots who want to dismantle our 2nd amendment rights. Punish the wrong activity, in this case murder, not the other people, the object, or the carrying of a weapon.

My prayers go out to the victims and their families. And may the shooter be justly punished. Peace.

Yes, but nobody said the shooter was even invited to that house – he/she may have had a grudge and just walked in off the street. No matter what the circumstances are, it is very sad for all involved and their families and friends.
