1 Dead, Others Injured as Palestinian Militants Bombard Israel With Rocket Attacks

JERUSALEM (The Blaze/AP) — Militants in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip bombarded southern Israel with rockets and mortars Sunday, striking an empty school and a score of other targets, as diplomats scrambled to keep a new convulsion of Israeli-Palestinian violence from escalating.
Senior Israeli officials met late into the night to discuss how to proceed with retaliatory operations against Gaza militants, who they say triggered the latest round of hostilities Thursday with a roadside ambush along the Israeli-Egypt border that killed eight Israelis.
Military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yoav Mordechai said Israel’s current response to the surge in violence – airstrikes that have killed 15 Palestinians, most of them militants – was not its final word.
Israel “will not hesitate” to widen its military operation if necessary, he told Israel Radio. “We will see how things develop on the ground,” he said without elaborating.
At midday, Israeli aircraft struck Gaza once again, the military said. It did not immediate disclose its target. Palestinian hospital officials reported one person was wounded.
Israeli troops also rounded up 50 Hamas activists in the West Bank in a sweeping overnight raid, Palestinian security officials said.
Diplomats scrambled to try to prevent the violence – the deadliest since Israel went to war against Gaza militants 2 1/2 years ago – from spiraling out of control.
Yaser Otham, the Egyptian representative to the Palestinian Authority, told Voice of Palestine radio that Cairo was “in contact with all parties to restore the truce in Gaza.”
Militant factions in Gaza confirmed the efforts. Talal Abu Tharefeh, spokesman for the small Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, said “all the Palestinian factions are interested in restoring the truce in order to protect our people.”
Gaza militants have dramatically cut back their attacks on Israel since the war, though the rocket and mortar fire did not cease completely.
Large-scale Israeli military operations against Gaza gunmen would almost certainly create new friction with the Muslim world at a time when Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is preparing to ask the United Nations to recognize an independent Palestinian state.
And pictures of a major Israeli offensive in Gaza could hurt the Jewish state’s efforts to minimize world support for the Palestinian statehood bid. The war Israel launched in the seaside strip in late 2008 badly tarnished its international image because of the high civilian death toll.
A spokesman said Abbas’ Palestinian Authority planned to use the renewed violence to bolster its case for statehood at the United Nations next month.
“An independent Palestinian state is the remedy for violence,” Husam Zomlot said. “It would control its borders and prevent such deterioration from happening.”
Abbas, who only rules the West Bank, asserts no such prospective control at this time. Hamas routed his loyalists from Gaza in a violent 2007 takeover, and a reconciliation pact the two sides signed in May has stalled.
Hamas opposes both peacemaking with Israel and Abbas’ statehood bid. Israel and the U.S. do not see that largely symbolic route, which Abbas chose after a prolonged deadlock in negotiations, as a way out of decades of violence that reignited last week.
Since Thursday’s ambush, militants have fired some 100 rockets and mortars on southern Israel, killing an Israeli man and wounding about a dozen other people on Saturday. No serious injuries were reported Sunday.
Egypt was drawn into the current round of violence after at least three of its security forces were killed as Israeli troops pursued militants involved in the ambush along the Israel-Egypt border. Cairo initially threatened to withdraw its ambassador to Israel but relented after Israel apologized.
Diplomats in Cairo and Jerusalem said the U.S., France and Germany had worked with the Israelis and Egyptians to end the diplomatic spat. They spoke on condition of anonymity in order to discuss ongoing diplomatic efforts.
In the Egyptian capital, however, popular anger against Israel simmered, and protesters gathered outside the Israeli Embassy for a third day on Sunday, demanding the expulsion of the Israeli envoy who is now vacationing abroad.

Why not expect it from the militants (most likely Hamas)? Why would this create a division between Israel & Egypt, if the border was ambushed by militants? One would think it would unite them in an effort to rid those who threatened both their countries. Why look for a reason to scapegoat Israel?

In addition, the so called displaced Palestinians are displaced by choice and their present condition is approved by the Arab world otherwise why wouldn’t they allow them to assimilate into their respective countries? It’s always good to have human fodder for proxy fighters against their hatred for Israel. Gaza was given to the Palestinians and all they did was trash existing Jewish religious sites and farming. If anything it’s the Jordanians who are occupying Israeli territory as they received 78% of the Palestine Mandate. If Palestinians want a homeland then it should be Jordan. How in the world do you have peace with one side openly declaring they will drive the Jews into the sea.

I believe this to be the real problem. Like many libs/progressives/dems.. You hate Bible truth, and deny God. The Bible clearly states that Israel is God’s chosen people. Through Bible prophecy, we know that the jewish people will spread to the corners of the eath, be persecuted the world over, and then come back to their home land. That puts you in a pickle now, does it not? Thus the reason so many of you hate Israel. It puts holes in your athiestic beliefs, an not other religion in the world has real prophecy like the Bible does. Deny Israel all you want, they will continue to occupy the land that God gave them. One day they will destroy the mosque on the Temple Mount, and rebuild the real temple.

The Israelis always showed restraint in counter attacks and trying to reduce any collateral damage. The Palestinians who start the attack will hide behind their own women and children. What other people do this? So obviously the collateral damage increases due to their own cowardice and inhuman acts. The world will focus on the innocent Palestinian casualties not the Israeli ones.
What would happen if Israel shows the Palestinians that if you openly want to cast us out into the sea we will repay you in kind.
As was stated before in another post, if digging under the mosque on the Temple Mount occur, relics that would be unearthed would be Jewish not Muslim. Therefore the history of who was there first needs scrutiny by the ignorant.

YHWH will judge the members of the U.N who will force the division of HIS land, I fear the U.S has had a big role in this decision…..we will be Judged….The argument that Israel cannot respond with superior firepower is absolutely ludicrous. The palestinians should thank whom ever they pray to, that I don’t have charge over the IDF, because there would be NO more palestinians…..at least Israel has tried and tried to reach peace, even giving up their land…but it is never enough, because the arabs do not wish for peace, only wish for the extinction of the Jewish people! YHWH have mercy!!!!!

Posted on August 21, 2011 at 10:08amYes – for me, it just shows the “supernatural” reality of EVIL….this hatred has been going on for thousands of years — and they are “relatives”…..going back to the story about Ishmael and Isaac. And I’ve noticed, even though this kind of agressive stuff happens on the part of the Palestinians, and they actually state that their goal is to wipe them off the face of the earth, etc. — the libeerals come back and say it’s just because they have been unfairly oppressed all these years by Israel!!!!! It’s pure craziness….and a form of insanity in my opinion. Beware – next month UN will try to declare a Palestinian state and we’ll see what the U.S. does this time…..(we usually veto such things) but with the anti-Semitic/treasonous Obama regime in now — what will happen?

Posted on August 21, 2011 at 10:23amI have been studying Zachariah 12, 13, and 14. Romans 11: 25-27 tells us that Israels eyes have been blinded until the full number of gentiles have come in. Then all of Israel will be saved. As for the war in Zech however, when all nations come against her, I believe that it says that a third will be saved (a remnant), as Jesus Himself steps in to help her and he will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. I have pondered as to whether God no longer expects us to stand with Israel, and I have asked for Holy Spirit guidance for this, and what He drives home to me is that Israel is of the true branches,closest to the root, we as Christians are of the wild olive branches who have been grafted in. There is no doubt in my mind that God’s heart is first and foremost..with the branches closest to the root..that being Israel… and then us…spiritual Israel. God does say that we are to witness to her. That is why I will stand with Israel…God has revealed His heart.

The USA needs to worry about defending the USA and do what is necessary to protect American citizens! Israel needs to do what they need to do to defend Israel and their citizens! Israel and the USA are separate countries and should stay out of each others business financially and militarily! If Israel wants to attack Iran and wipe out Islam then do it but leave the USA out of it! The USA should not tell Israel what to do and the USA owes Israel nothing! Just like the USA should stay out of Irelands, Italy’s, Germany’s, Frances, England’s, Poland’s, China‘s and Russia’s business where the majority of the USA citizens are descendants from!
