1 in 10 Million White Buffalo Found Mutilated on Texas Ranch

Officials in Texas are investigating the gruesome death of a rare white buffalo calf found mutilated and skinned on a ranch 50 miles outside of Dallas.

Hunt County Lakota Buffalo Ranch owner Arby Little Soldier told KDFW-TV he and his wife returned from out of town to find the grisly discovery. The calf was considered sacred by some in the Native American community; its mother was also found dead the next day.

According to KDFW, the non-albino white buffalo was given the name Lightning Medicine Cloud in a special ceremony last summer. The odds of a white buffalo birth are reportedly said to be 1 in 10 million.

“My people – my brothers, my sisters – are hurt for what has happened here at this ranch,” Little Soldier told the station. “You don’t think things like this are going to happen to such a sacred animal, a sacred family.”

The Hunt County Sheriff’s Office was notified of the incident by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and is conducting an investigation with the help of the Department of Homeland Security and the National Indian Council, KDFW reported.

Little Soldier said the calf’s legend will endure at the ranch.

“He was the hope of all nations,” he told KDFW. “You have taken the inner spirituality. You tried to stop what we‘re bringing back to y’all, but you just opened the doors to release the message to all people.”

According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the calf’s father was killed last month by a lightning strike.

    This breaks my heart. I followed the stories surrounding this calf’s birth and the celebration of his birth with great interest. It never occurred to me that anyone could do such a horrible thing. Deepest sympathy to the Lakotas.

      Same here, I followed him too. This is nothing put PURE EVIL…..the world is going to hell faster by the day. Please pray that one day soon all this crap will stop and all the evil in the world will be sentenced to hell for all eternity.

      As far as it being “sacred” because it is a white buffalo, that is nonsense.
      It was just a white calf, rare for sure, but just a buffalo after all is said and done.

      Back in 1994 when Miracle (another white buffalo) was born to the Heiders, Ted Nugent offered to buy it. The Heiders decided it would be wrong to sell the buffalo and profit from it so, they kept it. It makes me kind of wonder if with all of the controversy surrounding Nugent if this wasn’t some sort of message. Doesn’t he have a song about the white buffalo?

      It is very sad to me anytime an animal is killed like that..and yes..I would say that the people or person responsible is very evil..no exception..God sees all..and he will render his judgement accordingly… this was not their calf to be slaughtering… This person or persons may have some very deep mental issues such as precursors to being a serial killer. .They took a life and mutilated and skinned it..perhaps for the hide..being rare and all..I would consider them murderers and thieves.

      It was probably killed by an illegal alien because Native Americans have a right here, and the Mexicans think they own Texas. I am so tired of hearing only Spanish and I live near Dallas. I am so tired of Hispanics driving 10 miles under the speed limit because they don’t want to be caught illegal and deported. I hate the fact that after living in Texas for only 6 years when I see a bad driver I automatically assume it’s an illegal alien. I hate the fact that when I see someone who looks Hispanic, I assume they don’t speak English because there are so many here. I have friends who came her legally (from Columbia, Honduras, etc.) and they learned the language.

    Although this is a sad event,i have one question to ask. Knowing the white buffalo is sacred, why the hell did they leave it out in the open, and ungarded?! The owner is as much to blame for this, as those who did it,what the hell happened to commen sense? Any Rancher, aspca org.farmer, etc, would have, if asked been willing to care for this animal while the owners were gone.Poaching, and the killing of livestock here in Texas, can and does get one killed,whom ever did this is lucky, for now, to have the hide still on……

      I have to agree. And NO, I’m not a democrat, liberal, progressive, socialist, communist, republican or any of those things that put party before country.

      We should all be aware that everytime we leave our home we could return to a crime scene. It really has nothing to do with the economy and everything to do with drug abuse or bored people or sick people, whatever.

      Do you not lock your doors and windows when you’re away? Do you leave the riding lawn mower in the driveway on a trailer? Do you leave your keys in your car? Its sad, but yes, we are responsible for our belongings and responsible people do take steps to keep it safe.

      It could have been as simple as getting a friend to stay there.

      The article says they returned from out of town. It could be it was a day trip, it never said they were gone over night. Out of town could have been a one hour drive, we just don’t know.

To have the mentality that because they went out of town, and by doing so they jeopardized the safety of the animal! That is stupid!       The white buffalo is a sacred animal and should be treated the same as a religious symbol because thats what it is. It was on display for all to see and share. What would be the outrage if vandals destroyed or defaced a religious site church or symbol. The only thing the owner was guilty of was the sharing of a religious symbol.

      Native Americans have also hunted buffalo just to obtain trophy pieces (like the tongue or ear), ie. they don’t use everything; over-hunted a population to extinction in an area then simply moved on; terraformed the environment (ie. didn’t live in balance); practiced warfare just to keep in shape (as in they were bored so they attacked another village); dashed the captured babies’ heads to bits in front of their mothers; raped women; kept slaves; murdered men, women, children and the infirm; and in all instances showed they are just as capable of mass murders,evil deeds, and chicanery as the evil Europeans. They even broke treaties, lots of them, long before it became commonplace and to the detriment of the Evil Europeans. The “hope for all nations” is code for reparations from dumb Americans who believe the Noble Savage mythos and conquest of lands from said morons.
      As for the buffalo killers, they should be shot, because I think the owner still claims to be an American, in which case his property rights were violated and killing a stupid animal just to be spiteful shows a mentality better suited to the grave.

      Either you are ignorant about Native Americans or you are deliberately trying to provide misleading information. Native Americans always considered the buffalo sacred because they got so many things from them that were necessary for survival. They did NOT waste anything from the buffalo or kill them just for tongues or ears.

      Anyone who would mutilate an innocent animal is disgusting; especially one that meant so much to many people.

    More on the significance of the white buffalo to many Native Americans.

    “It has come to speak to you…and it’s telling you something here…you have to listen,” says Lakota Sundance chief and medicine man David Swallow, Jr. “It’s not an Indian thing; it’s for humanity.”

    A white buffalo carries a message to the people to whom it appears, warning them that hard times, such as an epidemic of disease, will be arriving unless the people examine the way they’ve been living and learn to live in a way that is better for all.

    When the white buffalo appears to the Lakota, says Swallow, a young man will kill it with a bow and arrow, and then he distributes the meat to everyone—“to the handicapped, the sick, or the old people,” he emphasizes. Within four days the hide is cured and tanned, and the holy man writes sacred symbols on it. Then, Swallow continues, the chief and holy man of the tribe would take the hide to the Black Hills as an offering to the Great Spirit so hard times would pass over the people. “But today, we cannot do it,” he says. “That’s why the Thunder People, the Thunder Nation, has took the other white buffalo; lightening striked and killed it,” he says of the white buffalo Miracle’s Second Chance in Janesville, Wisconsin.

      I am a Christian, but I also have learned (thanks to my father) some of the ways of the NA from which he descended (Blackfeet). There are more similarities between the two than most realize.

      I believe that God, just as he did to the ancient Hebrews, speaks to all through natural events of which He is both Creator and Master. No more should people dismiss the frequency with which the white buffalo is appearing than the natural events of the end times in Revelations.

      In a museum here in Montana, there was a white buffalo on display. I saw the display when I was younger and every 10 yrs or so, would visit the museum and there had to be a large space & a barrier around the white buffalo because in the later years (not in the earlier years on display when most people respected items on display) people were pulling the fur off the buffalo as a trophy! The buffalo was almost bald on the back end of him.
      Alot of cruel/mean-spirited people in this world. Many years ago some mean-spirited kids broke into the local animal shelter and tortured cats & dogs. They did catch the guys and the paper did show some pictures of the poor animals they tortured. These guys weren’t even on drugs. Just miserable people.

      …I’ve always wondered why a civilization…loosely defined…without a real and demonstrated belief in or even concept of private property…can lay claim to vast expanses of land…boggles my mind.

      The UN should set the example and give the land the UN is on back to the Native Americans and then get the hell out.

      As far as the rest of the “Stolen” land. I’m sorry that war was over 100 years ago. Time to join the rest of us as US citizens and live in the now. There is no way that 300 million people are going to say “my bad” and hand everything over they have to a group of people who played the “enemy of my enemy is my friend” game and lost badly. The Natives were hardly innocents. They took sides with the English and the French against their own people whom they hated even more than the white invaders.
