13-Year-Old Banned from NY Field Hockey Team for Being Too Good

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (NewsCore) — Keeling Pilaro is one of the best field hockey players in Southampton, N.Y., and one of the best in his division — but he is not allowed to play on his high school team because he is too good.

Keeling is all of about four feet eight inches (1.4 meters) and 82 pounds (37 kilograms), but when he picks up a field hockey stick he is a star — or at least he was the last two years he played on Southampton High School’s varsity team. That is exactly why he is not allowed to play this year.

The 13-year-old is the only boy playing on an all-girls team. After two years, Section XI — which oversees Suffolk County’s high school sports — determined that as a boy, Keeling is such an impressive player, he is “having a significant adverse effect on some of his opposing female players … the rules state he would be allowed to play if he wasn’t the dominant player.”

Keeling said he is not the best player but also not the worst. He said some girls are faster and stronger and can beat him one-on-one.

But Section XI’s executive director, Ed Cinelli, told FOX’s WNYW, “As a sport it’s a girls sport. When a boy plays, it leads the way for other male players to come in and take over.”

Keeling learned to play the sport in Ireland, where it is a men’s sport too. He, his parents, and his teammates are not taking the committee‘s decision lightly and the Long Island boy’s fight is not over yet.

He may have lost his bid and initial appeal, but he is going back again for a final time May 15. If he wins that, he will be allowed back on the field. If not, he may never play in that town again.

      If they don‘t provide a boy’s team and he‘s not PHYSICALLY dominant why doesn’t he have the same rights to opportunity that girls have in joining the wrestling team even if it makes the rare gentlemen uncomfortable?

      How did feminists con the schools into believing letting girls play with guys builds their self-esteem and should be allowed but boys playing with girls hurts their esteem? Aren’t they but co-ed?

      Maybe the girl players should throw a hissy-fit like the little boy who didnt get the baseball and they can have their way. Poor little Princesses are told they’re as good as men but when the rubber meets the road, they have to level the field and handicap the men just to break even.

      …and no matter how the boys have to DUMB-DOWN and WEAKEN their game so girls don’t get broken bones and bruses. I have known 3 “girls” who could keep-up with boys…my grandma: 6′,165lbs-Duch-ancestery and my mother: (when a child) no-dolls, softball foodtball, tennis, rollerscating,bycicling,climing-trees…only5′7”X115lbs+tough-as-nails, and (for 40yrs) a 6′-170lbs.+Finn-ancestery+brwn-belt-karate’. These-2-had/1-have “You wana mess with me?!” personalities! P.s.: My grandma had the same large hands as my father had.

      Do you want shared rest rooms? That is equal, but not right. Somehow we would rather deceive ourselves that our bodies are equal (which also makes them interchangeable, or you can choose which you have).

      It does seem fair to me that if a girl is actually good enough to physically compete with the boys, then why not? But for boys to compete on girl teams, would open the floodgates of faster, stronger boys, and girls would quickly be pushed aside. I think the idea here is to allow people to play against fair competition, protecting weaker groups, so that everyone has a realm to play in. Since there isn’t a boys team, he should change sports rather than take an unfair advantage over girls. Watch girls vs boys soccer to see what I mean.

      If a girl wants to play “above her league”, what harm does it do the boys who are supposed to be stronger? Are they afraid girls will rush in and they will no longer be able to compete. These rules also protect players from injury. Even boxers have weight classes to protect the “lighter weight” players, but who would get upset if a light weight challenged a heavier player?

      I say these things not because I think girls are lesser- I am one. (What we have in brains, you guys do have in strength.) :)

      I really don’t care about sports, but find this whole topic to be telling of our gender-confused society. I am absolutely for equal work, equal pay, but against women on the front lines in war.

      If I was 13 and the only boy on an all-girl team, I would think myself extremely clever. In fact, I wish I had thought of it when I was that age. No wonder he is upset. I certainly would be if I was him.

      Don’t worry everyone!

      When SHTF, The boys/girls will be separated from the men who they will need to protect them. Sure there might be a few women who can man a sniper post and bring down a few, but I’m talking the real grunt work of survival not the strength in one finger. Each of us have gifts, some bring more or less to the table. We are equal under the law but different. The differences should be celebrated/recognized not denigrated/erased to make one or both sexes feel they are exactly the same.

      Men / young adult males are permitted to play field hockey in Pennsylvania. There are not many that do and most are from recruited from Europe to play for small private schools.
      The team that carried the young man on the roster did win the 2010 state championship.

      Wow, three years have passed already. It seems just like moments ago I started reading and posting against this story. Time flies when you are having fun.

      You know, if he was accepted to the team then they should honor that regardless of whether he is better than the girls. I think turn about is fair play. Girls want to play in boy sports all the time, then they will need to suck it up when a boy plays on a girls team. Punishing him for being good is wrong. This should serve as an incentive for the girls to go out and say, we whipped the pants off this team.

      1: make the good hockey players wear leads weights so they’re not faster than anyone else.
      2: give the better players crappy sticks so they don’t hit the puck better than anyone else.
      3: make the goals larger and eliminate goalies so nobody scores better than anyone else.
      4: make good players wear radios so they can’t concentrate better than anyone else.
      5: make the puck larger (pizza-sized) so nobody can hit it better than anyone else.

    A few things here:

    He should have been on a team with kids of his own age — not always “playing up.”

    Also, boys are generally stronger than girls going in late jr high and definitely high school. It IS an unfair advantage to have boy playing on a girl’s team.

    If he is REALLY motivated, he should start his own team. OR he can switch to a different sport.

    A person just can’t do everything they want to. Age, location and yes, gender, are legitimate factors in determining what we can and cannot do…all thoughout our lives.

      I absolutely agree. We have become so gender confused that Bibles have been changed to make God gender neutral (and possibly feminine in some versions).

      The reason it matters that God is “Male” (though He has no physical form at all, other than any way He may wish to manifest Himself to us), is so that we understand that we are His Bride. We learn that a husband should be willing to lay down His life for us, as Jesus gave His life for the Church. Knowing God as He presents Himself to us helps us to know ourselves as we relate to Him. So seeing Him as a male helps us to see ourselves as we are.

      Jesus, like Adam, gave life to woman (Eve from Adam, the Church from Christ)- though in the flesh, through birth, woman gives life to man. Interesting how Jesus submitted Himself to entering fully into our existence by arriving through woman. He could have just come down from heaven, but in Christ, God fully entered into our space, time and existence. He took on fallen flesh, in order to heal and restore us. But this restoration comes through His free gift of life- “Adam’s Rib” in the form of His Spirit- to all who say yes.

      I guess that wasn’t very politically correct either…

      girls are allowed to wrestle in highs school. And yes they have weight divisions in wrestling, but look at the size of this 13 year old. He’s only 4 foot 8 and 82 pounds.

      If he is dominating the game those girls need to get tougher. I have two teenage daughters who dance they don’t play sports, but I believe they could hold their own against their 11 year old brother.

      Well, 4′8″ and 82 pounds is pretty small for a kid his age, I’m 16, and when i was 13, i was easily 5′2″ and 120 pounds. Now I‘m not saying that every kid at the age of 13 should be 5’2″ and 120 pounds, I’m just saying that that is pretty small for 13 years old.

      Let’s be fair and equal, we already know that separate but equal was ruled unconstitutional by the SC.

      So, let’s only have one team for each sport.

      Why is it noone has a problem with separate sports for the girls, but let men attempt to have a country club and exclude the women and it’s a lawsuit just waiting to happen?

      Let the boy play field hockey and let the girls wrestle.

      By segregating the two you are already admitting that very few women can compete with men.

      No one had a problem when Billy Jean King beat Bobby Riggs in tennis. She was in her prime and he was 50 and having to allow King play the doubles lines. No problem chalking one up for the ladies in that one.

      That‘s one reason I don’t watch women’s sports. When I watch, I want to watch the best.

      We spend extra money at colleges to support women’s athletics even though no one comes out and supports them. Good thing we have college football or their would be no sports in college at all.

      Except for intramurals, would that also be segregated?

      The biggest problem I see here for the people making comments is that they can not or are unwilling to read. 1. Where he came from field hockey is a boys and a girls sport. 2. There is no boys team for field hockey. 3. If you really think about it the rule in place was probably made for bigger boys and trying to level the playing field when a boy playing on the girls team is much bigger and stronger than the girls. The rule is one of those absolutes without taking consideration in the size of the boy. To me it sounds like the absolutes I have dealt out when i was younger as a goodC christian member of the Republican party.
      Actually it sounds like John Boehner and his absolutes he has placed on the political system bringing the country to its knees. Also sounds like a Glenn Beck twisted idea. If you believe in the bible, and Jesus you should love your neighbor like you love yourself. it’s time to stop the squabbling and do as Jesus commanded. If you call yourself a good Christian it is about time you all started acting like good Christains instead of hate mongors.

    Mens and boys leagues for field hockey exist in Ireland, where this kid came from about 2 years ago…. he played it there and his only outlet for playing it here was with the Girls Varsity Team. He acutally plays with girls that are older and bigger than him. Dude sez let the kid play if that’s what he wants to do. If the girls don’t have a problem with it, why should the parents or politi-craps give a damn? Chicks with sticks…. Dude sez there are a lot worse places a 13 year old boy could be….

    Only in America would excellence be BANNED. If you work hard and achieve, you are punished. This is a good example of liberalism at work. Now, when they are done punishing all the wealth creators, all the job creators, what happens? Can 80% of us live off the hard work of the other 20%? What happens when the 20% decide its no longer worth it? OWS believes the “rich” should have to pay… for pretty much everything. What happens when the “rich” decide to STOP? Most taxes are paid on income, so the truly rich can easily stop producing taxable income and live off of their wealth, leaving empty offices and factories. I just wonder if the libs have any idea what the end results of their policies will be. I believe that most of them are good people, just useful idiots. And we know what happens to useful idiots once their usefulness is gone…

I say if he is doing so well, give him some competition and put him on a all boys team and see how well he does then. I’m not sure why everyone is freaking out about this.

      Boys team not available because the girls have to have as many sports teams as the boys.
      So we don’t have enough money to support a boys field hockey team because we have to make sure the girls are not slighted.
      In order to do so we have to make cuts to boys sports to do so.

      I have an idea offer one team for each sport. This way more different sports are made available for all.

    Double standard alert! Girls routinely force their way on to football fields crying discrimination because football is offered only to boys. Coaches are forced to play the girls in the interest of fairness. Now when the roles are reversed the boy is going to be banned? Where is the ACLU? Where are the feminists screaming for equality? Where are the scientists who say there is no differences between men and women? If you are going to force a male off an all girls team, then by all means, purge the girls from the all boys teams, in the interest of “fairness and equality for all”.

      It’a an all girls sport Slayer. They used to practice on the field next to my rugby team in college. They wear plaid skirts and knee socks. A very British looking uniform, at least it was back then. Why a boy would want to play it, or why his dad would let him play it, is the question I have. Dad is probaby a Democrat fighting the left’s war on masculinity.

      did you watch the video? They clearly stated he learned to play in Ireland, where its a male sport. It isnt a male sport here in the states. Girls have field hockey, boys play lacrosse (which girls play that too). I dont think there was ever a need for a boys field hockey team based on popularity of the sport here in the states with males….think – football, baseball, tennis, hockey, golf, basketball, lacrosse.

      In college, the women’s field hockey team practised right next to our baseball field. This is not a light weight sport. Lot of sticks, elbows and body checks. It is basically ice hockey on grass but with a lot less padding.

      I have always wondered why this was not a men’s sport. Highly competitive, very fast paced and very physical. A lot harded to play than soccer.

Since the boy wants to play a sport girls play now makes him gay and you should question his parents? lol, get a life dude. i feel sorry for your children and the sheltered life they lead. Why cant you just appreciate the fact that a kid is happy to play a sport and accel at it instead of wasting away on teh sofa playing a video game, etc?
