1,000+ Thai Dogs Rescued From Being Cooked & Eaten

Dogs Rescued From Being Eaten in ThailandThai officials have rescued over 1,000 dogs on their way to Vietnam to be cooked and eaten, AFP reports.

Officials said police intercepted four trucks near the Thai-Laos border stacked with tiny cages housing 1,011 dogs. Some had already died due to the conditions:

[A livestock development spokeswoman] said an additional 119 had died either through suffocation in the cramped cages or when they were thrown from the back of the trucks as the alleged traffickers sped away from arresting officers.

According to AFP, traffickers round up stray dogs in Thai villages and also barter for pets. They then turn around and sell them for meat and can get around $33 per animal in Vietnam.

Below, Reuters has video of the rescued animals (Content Warning: some of the images may be disturbing to some):

Maybe the folks that are horrified by this need to experience that level of poverty for themselves, I’m sure after a spoonful of just rice everyday the Kun -Pow puppy may sound very appetizing.

As long as they draw the line with–not– eating people I’m good with it, It does give a new meaning to the word doggie bag, the scraps aren’t for the dog it is the dog.

@ RPA “ignorant low-life”? Is’nt eating live monkey brains a high-brow wealthy thing? the opposite of “low life”. Or possibly is it because only people and dogs have souls? Where is the outrage for our tasy furry foods? In Katrina it was reported that people were eating pets-just not thier own pets. I am against animal abuse BUT I love meat so kill it quick and painless then pass the gravy.

Asian countries treat their little animals like barbarians. In China both cats and dopgs are killed and eaten nearly always in view of one another during the slaughter process.

The civility of a nation can be known by how they treat their little animals. These disgusting retards are knuckle-dragging Neanderthals and have no place in a civilized world.

There are many cultures that practice this.
When the Olympic games were held in Korea they had the restaurant owners change their menus.

The question I have here is this though.
What are they going to do with all of these dogs now?
These are going to be sick and neglected creatures that need a great deal of care besides that fact that they need food, water and shelter.

Do you think that being a conservative and a Blaze reading Glenn Beck fan makes you smart? Apparently it doesn’t. You are all dumb as dirt. However, you are very convincing. If fact, after reading your appalling and ignorant comments about the dog rescue, you have convinced me to join and support PETA. Our Democratic friends have consistently been much better than Republicans in protecting the earth and its animals. There is no doubt that this same news story on the Huffington Post would elicit far more humane responses. I would be more tolerant of Asians eating dogs and cats were it not for the most abject and beyond belief cruelty practiced by these societies. I have seen little pigs skinned alive in Asian markets while men, women, and children pass by the skinned shivering creature with no more compunction than as if they were passing by a cabbage cut in half. Children in restaurants first select a beautiful kitten from a cramped filthy cage to eat. The cat is placed in a noose at the end of a pole and hit on the head several times to calm it down. Then it is dipped alive several times in boiling water to make skinning easier. Then while still alive, it is skinned . Many cats and dogs are better than some humans in every conceivable way. They are more kind, loving, noble, and even more intelligent than some Blaze posters. One thing is clear: in future holocausts there will be no lack of prison guards.

“…there is the obvious advantage that dog can be fed on dog. One can reduce one’s pack little by little, slaughtering the feebler ones and feeding the chosen with them. In this way they get fresh meat. Our dogs lived on dog’s flesh and pemmican the whole way, and this enabled them to do splendid work. And if we ourselves wanted a piece of fresh meat we could cut off a delicate little fillet; it tasted to us as good as the best beef. The dogs do not object at all; as long as they get their share they do not mind what part of their comrade’s carcass it comes from. All that was left after one of these canine meals was the teeth of the victim – and if it had been a really hard day, these also disappeared.” (Roald Amundsen. “The South Pole”)

These animals are not food for poor or starving people. Dog meat has been a staple in many parts of the world for millennium and is considered very tasty.

I had burro (donkey) in Mexico in the early 1970s, and it was very good. I didn’t find out about the source of the meat until someone questioned the texture and we started a conversation with owner of the shack where we ate. I guess it was fitting that we had the meat as a burrito, which means “little burro.”

Although I do not recommend consuming an animal you have a relationship with, I was introduced to dog while living in the South Pacific, although not considered a polite food, to my astonishment it was quite good, akin to the dark meat from turkey. Call me crazy but I can think of worse repercussions of allowing the strays and unwanted dogs to live. Do dogs develop edible meat faster and less expensively than cows, as apparently do rabbits? If so, maybe more problems are solved than created in allowing Dog trafficking in Asia. Any outrage over this issue is further evidence of ignorance and myopia in a society long coddled with guaranteed necessities. We are babies here, who have the luxury of being picky eaters. The shame is ours not theirs. “Bone” apetit Vietnam! P.S. I recommend it being baked in an underground oven, salt to taste.

I am sure for example the people of India are sickened by the fact we eat steaks and hamburgers. If we were starving we would most likely eat dogs unless the dog can hunt birds, track anything or was trained police bite work. It’s all in what you are raised with. The fact that there are places that have to eat man’s best friend and furry little kittens( which “we” bred for our use[rat catchers and guard dogs] is still a little unnerving) only proves that there just might be too many people on the planet. Maybe we should send all those new free birth control pills to Africa and Asia( althought the people there would probably fry them up in a sautee’ pan). Exactly Squirrel! What now? Will the dogs be better off? Obviously not!
If they eat dogs because they can’t afford beef, then what are they going to do with all those dogs?
The pictures show the dogs AFTER being RESCUED. Do they look like they are better off? Most of them were strays picked up in Thailand or bartered for from owners. Will they just turn them loose?
There will probably be some group from California that will spend alot of money to set up an adoption program so people can “rescue” a Thailand dog and wear it as a badge like they do the shelter dogs from America. Like the Hollywood types do with kids. Look at me!…I’m a good person!

It is awful the way the dogs were being handled before they were to be butcherd, but in reality they would be better off used as food than to continue a misserable life in a poverty stricken nation. And would have provided food for the poor PEOPLE that go hungry.

Another misconception, cows are not sacred in India and never have been. There are no “sacred” animals in the Hindu religion and they certainly don’t worship them. Such lack of knowledge is to be expected, but what does surprise me is that this story gets loads of replies but the one about the riot victim in the UK got none. Says it all.

Nothing wrong with eating dog, if you like it and that is what you have to do to stay alive. The people in many countries eat them to survive. What’s more important human survival or dogs? Also, who the crap are we in America to tell anybody in any country what they can or can not eat. I love dogs, but if necessary I would eat one, with a lot of spices.

Sorry again Belindab. I live in a climate where the temps reach 30 below in the winter, so there are no plants, or bugs to be eaten. Again, if it was January, and there was no other food to be had, I would not be wrong for feeding my kids a dog. I would be wrong however for letting my kids starve to death and would certainly have to answer to the Heavenly Father as to why I let them starve when there were animals to be eaten.

BELIMDAB, We have hundreds of thousands of unwanted dogs which are euthanized every year. Our foreign aid, consisting of mainly highly depreciated dollars, is used for the enjoyment of the ruling class of these countries while the people suffer from starvation and malnutrition.

We could put these dogs, which will be euthanized anyway, to good use. Give them to the S. E. Asian countries which need the food if their culture will allow it. They would be far more appreciated than our money.

That explains why when I was in Thailand I never seen a stray dog! And those street vendors selling “meat on a stick”, They always said it was chicken, but it sure didn’t look or taste like chicken!
If they are getting 33 bucks a head for those scrawny, wormy dogs just think what we could get for all those big muscle bound pit bulls in our shelters! heck even at $33 per head we would be looking at about $100 millions dollars a year! I wonder what the going rate is for cats, we could export 3-4 million of those suckers too.

Who gives a flip about dogs in asia about to get eaten? There is much bigger and more important news worth reading, and worth printing. These are dogs, not people. If you want to get up in arms, go to watchdog.com, type in your address, and see just how many child molesters there are roaming the area you live. This is a topic worth worrying about, much more so than a bunch of stray mongrels. This is the sort of stuff the libs get worked up over. They watched to many Bambi movies, and have not figured out that animals are not people, they do not have a soul, and do not have the same thoughts and emotions. I own a dog, and it is well cared for, but in the big picture, it does not scratch the surface of importance like my children. It does not scratch the surface compared to your children, and I do not even know your kids. Leave the animal activist stuff on the lib sites.

Cat meat is stringy, I can tell you from personal experience, it was not my favorite meal, the going rate would not be worth the price of butchering. There may be others that will develop the taste for it, kind of like eggplant or cilantro. The only hope would be clever advertising like “Cat, its what’s for dinner!”, or “Cat, the other other white meat!“ or ”Hey, look what mom dragged in.” When all is said and done though, no matter what we try, Cat calendars have probably soured public support for feline consumption. Pity. Yet another solution to so many problems made inaccessible by liberal bleeding heart mentality.

Although I find eating dogs personally repugnant, I would never tell another country what to do. The only time we have control over another culture is here in America. I don‘t believe communities of Thai’s should be allowed to pick up stray dogs in America, but what they do in their own country is their business. I don’t think I could ever eat a dog, just because their intelligence has been proven to be about that of a 2-4 year old (depending on the breed). I would not hesitate to eat squirrel, rabbits, deer or other wild game (I have in the past….don’t remember exactly how squirrel tasted, but I remember I liked it….my grandpa’s favorite part was the brains.)

I have dogs as pets and always considered and treated them as one of our family members. It is heartbreaking to see these dogs being shipped for human consumption. But I also find it very appalling to see many comments condemning the eating habits of other cultures. Isn’t this a hypocrisy while the so called cultured society relish eating veal (the calves are raised in a inhumane way), throwing live lobsters in a pot of boiling water, raising chickens in a very cramped cage with wire meshing etc. Do you consider them humane? Let’s not be judgmental about other culture before looking at our own behavior.

It doesn’t sound right to me but think about this in our country we kill thousands of healthy dogs and cats everyday and then disguard the remains while people are starving in the streets seems to me the asian people are more respectful of the dogs than us.

No that wouldn’t be my choice, I love dogs, and don’t like to see them treated inhumanely, but eating dogs is the culture in Asia. I thought all of you liberals were big on diversity. If I were to apply criteria for what kind of human should be eaten instead of a faithful dog, I would probably pick those with political and emotional views like….yours. I would at least see it as a way to keep your kind of thinking from becoming generational. But I can’t even joke about choosing to consume a fellow human being no matter what it is they like to do with their day or their mind. You are going to have to leave the city one day and see the world, or your narrow minded ways are going to best your ability to wrestle with the eventualities of our uncertain future as a free society. You have no leg to stand on. If you are a Darwinist or Atheist then surely you must recognize that dogs fare lower on the food and evolutionary chain than do humans, and if you are a believer in God, than you should certainly have greater respect for one of His children, created in his image, than an animal designed for the use and dominion of man. Get a grip and stop spending your emotional strength where it does the least good.

Their people may have arrested them for the “coditions” they were kept in and not the fact they were eating dogs. You can’t keep cattle or hogs or chickens in those types of conditions here and we eat those animals.

I say let them eat what they want. Someone gonna tell me I can’t eat deer because someone just watched Bambi? Can’t eat fish because of Nemo? It’s meat, food. So the people don’t eat because people love dogs. I dont agree with the treatment of them prior to la bouchrie, but I can’t fault people for eating what they want.
