11-Year-Old Reporter Challenges Michelle Obama on ‘Government’ Role in Anti-Childhood Obesity Push

The video featured above captures one of those rare, “out of the mouths of babes” moments. In an interview released Monday, an 11-year-old reporter named Topanga Sena challenged the first lady Let’s Move! anti-obesity program.

Michelle Obama was asked to respond to critics of the program who say the government has no business telling people how to eat.

Miss Topanga is certainly showing promise as a reporter and, according to the Free Beacon, is currently reporting for Scholastic News Kids Press Corps in Florida.

Below is a transcript provided by the Beacon:

TOPANGA SENA: How do you respond to critics who say the government should not be telling people how to eat or to stay active?

MICHELLE OBAMA: You know, that’s absolutely right—and Let’s Move! doesn’t do that. Let’s Move! is not about having government telling people what to do, because government doesn’t have all the answers. I mean, a problem that’s this big and affects so many people requires everyone to step up. So we’re asking everyone to do their part. Parents have to make some changes at home, but they need the information to be able to make those choices. And they have to have access to affordable foods in their communities—fresh and healthy foods, right? We need government to do its part, but we need businesses to do their part, as well.

However, as The Blaze has extensively reported the first lady’s anti-childhood obesity push has done everything from revamp the menu at Olive Gardens to include “kid-friendly,” low sodium options nationwide to take the happy out of Happy Meals by requiring the fast food giant to include — whether it is asked for or not — apple wedges and less french fries in every child’s Happy Meal.

The Blaze has also reported on what happens when local school districts take hold of children’s lunch options, thus Sena’s question on government control of food choices seems fitting.

Sure, “out of the mouths of babes.” How many 11 year olds ask a question starting with, “How do you respond to critics that say…”

What sad is the indoctrination. Every First Lady has a cause. Laura Bush’s cause was reading, Michelle Obama’s is healthy eating and exercises. Everyone agrees that’s good, except of course that now the current First Lady is advocating for healthy eating and exercise. Liberals have trouble explaining how suddenly the First Lady is an object of hate and derision when Laura Bush was not.

None of us are blind here. What’s the difference between those two First Ladies? What bad thing is one, that the other is not?

Here’s a thought Mrs. First Lady, maybe if you want to combat childhood obesity you should talk to your husband about some wealth fare reform. Review the WIC approved items as well as limit what those who receive support via the Hoosier Works Card, for example, can purchase with their card. I’m pretty sure that sugary sodas, HoHos, and Doritos shouldn’t be things that my tax dollars should pay for if you are truly at work to end obesity. It’s also interesting to note as MIBUGNU2 did the increase in food costs! Doesn’t that make inexpensive processed foods more appealing to those shopping on a dime? Healthy food choices are not as accessible to those on a tight budget so in turn you are driving the rate of obesity higher by keeping the cost of healthy foods up…maybe it’s just a ploy to get more people ready to sign up for Obamacare! What a team you and your husband make!

After all, look at china. Every morning before work the ENTIRE population of employees exercise together. The food thing is a little different. There STILL “IS” no adequate food supply infrastructure in china. So eating bugs and other bottom feeders “IS” still a way of life there.

Just like at home. Mom and Dad would say I “provide” you do as I say. That means you get up when I say, you eat when I say, you learn when I say, you work when I say… savvy?

Erm… I don’t think you see the difference between taking up and advocating a cause (like Nancy Reagan and the “Say No to Drugs” campaign- or Laura Bush and reading) and using the rule of government to force a desired end result to that cause (like Michelle and her ever expanding butt).

We’re talking about an Administration that put a figurative gun to the heads of the major banks and said, “You *WILL* take this TARP money.” Yeah, I know that happened before Obama, but you can‘t tell me Geithner didn’t take his marching orders from and speak for Obama. That said, you don’t think the exact same isn;t happening over and over again, every time an Obama (doesn’t matter which one) comes into contact with the CEO in one of their demonized industries?

Bottom line: if The Butt wants to battle obesity, maybe she should turn around, look in the mirror, and then stop serving 2000 calorie meals in the White House.

      @granolajohn
Your sarcasm notwithstanding, it‘s none of Moochelle’s GD business what I eat or how much I weigh. The issue here is the use of government power to force me to do something I don‘t want to do and the insulting intimation that they’re doing it because I don‘t know what’s best for me.

The reason why you see a difference is that Laura Bush was a liberal Republican.
      http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/assessment/2004/08/laura_bush.html

The left swooned over her, so they saw no need to attack her. She supported Roe vs Wade, advocated reading (though progressives would prefer to choose what sources are available to read), and was what drew many moderate votes. The above article shows that not all was roses and rainbows with the media, but it explains why the media had more respect for her and did not push attacks like they did on:
      Condoleezza Rice
      Sarah Palin
      Elisabeth Hasselbeck
      Michele Bachmann
      Dana Perino
      Michelle Malkin

The reason no attacks were really made on Laura was not respect for the position of First Lady. Please do not misinform the readers here. The fact is that she was always thought of as a liberal. Meanwhile, if she was as conservative as the women listed above, the left would have not held back one bit. In order to be honest JZS, you need to question with less disdain in your question. Otherwise your asking a question laced with insults with no care for the answer given. You are not honestly asking for knowledge, you are asking to further demonize the right and push a progressive agenda.

I am a true Liberal Moderate, and I stand against you on nearly every position you push. You do more damage for the true liberal side. You are a progressive hack looking to distort facts and history for an agenda

It seems the question of difference is the use of forcing companies into legal binding contracts to offer more healthy choices:
      http://blogs.suntimes.com/sweet/2011/09/michelle_obama_touting_food_ch.html

I am sure Laura Bush did not have libraries sign a legal contract to offer Mien Kampf, The Communist Manifesto, and various other literary works from progressive leaning political sources; while limiting the number of books on the second amendment, religion, and conservative sources on their shelves.

If you can not see the difference of the two, you are a lost hope. If Olive Garden wants to change a menu, fine. But, why does a legal binding contract need to be signed? This legally makes Olive Garden limit its menu, which limits the freedom of Olive Garden. What is business goes down for them? They can not revert back (legally). This is the gross overstepping of government.

Though Olive Garden has a right to tell the First Lady to pound sand and sign nothing. The problem is that this will set precedence that the government has a right to even offer such a contract. Next government will go to every restaurant and ask them to sign, and if not the business might be hounded by the IRS and countless investigations. Even the local government might pressure with rejection of a business license or audits. Don’t think government ever does that? Then you only need to look at the recent attacks on the Tea Parties.

Simple. She said the government couldn’t interfere, but she is going to anyway, because the government needs to give the people the information the government wants you to have. In the meantime, yes, some way she has been able to “persuade” the Department of Education to alter its school lunch programs closer to ones she wants children to have.

And the difference between Laura and Muchelle, Laura never told children or adults what to read, Muchelle has essentially changed the food pyramid to school lunches, to Happy Meals. Happy Meals? No toys in a Happy Meal? Give me a break. Let people decide for themselves, let the free market work, quit trying to pick winners and losers, you have it wrong.

      @dumpster baby

If you like being told that “parents WILL HAVE TO MAKE changes at home” then
she said nothing wrong. She said this at 0.25 – 0.30 sec. However,
I DON’T LIKE BEING TOLD WHAT I HAVE TO DO at home by the government.
Being told by my wife is another story….

I’ll tell you. First, she said “Parents have to make some changes at home” MAKE SOME CHANGES! Okay? Then she follows with “but they need the information to be able to make those choices.” MAKE THOSE CHOICES! Okay?

It‘s not as innocent as it sounds unless you look at the ’key’ words here. She wants parents to MAKE SOME CHANGES so they can then MAKE THOSE CHOICES. Like Beck would say… It’s a “nudge”….

This woman is pushing HER views on the rest of us when she has McDonald’s charging you the same, or more money for half the fries, via intimidation tactics. They didn’t even change the size of the packaging, as though to frame them, “See, we’re doing everything that we can to make Nanny Oblahblah happy. See kids, roll over and take it, because that‘s what American’s do when we’re pushed into a corner by a bully. Can’t fight back, oh no. That would make Nanny Oblahblah angry.”
I have been watching my carb intake since finding out that my blood sugar levels are high. Personal choice, personal responsibility. I find myself having to buy new clothes, and I feel better. However, if I tried the same type of diet modification for my step-son, he’d starve to death because of his high metabolism and the workouts that he has CHOSEN to be on for a few years now.
Moderation, in all things. A well balanced diet with normal activity can be a good thing. But Nanny Do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do trying to force it on people through threats and intimidation, while turning a blind eye to the meat by-product dubbed “pink slime” that goes into our children’s school lunches. Not a peep from her “health conscious” highness on the matter that I’ve seen so far.
This isn’t about food, this is flat out about control of the masses. They want to feed your kid pink slime and ketchup and call it “healthy”.
I don’t trust their observations for some reason..

Tiffany Gabbay, you are such a liar! Olive Garden and McDonald’s changed their menus on their own. No laws were made, no mandates put in place. Local school districts also added those menu changes on their own.

I know truthful journalism isn’t your forte, but you could avoid flat out lies or do a little research. But then again, Blazers are too stupid and ignorant to know the difference.

What I want to know is how does forcing McDonald’s to include apple wedges make the pink slime burgers in their Happy Meals any healthier? Do the apple wedges somehow magically counter the effects of the ammonia in the meat? What am I missing here?
Pink slime meat is approved by the FDA for use in school lunches. This eating healthy agenda has more holes in it than their global warming scheme.
