13 American NATO Service Members Killed by Suicide Bomber in Afghanistan

13 Americans Killed in Afghanistan

(AP) A Taliban suicide bomber rammed a van into an armored NATO bus Saturday in Kabul, killing 13 American troops and four Afghans, U.S. and Afghan officials said, in the deadliest attack on coalition forces in more than two months.

The explosion, which occurred as the convoy was passing the American University, sparked a fireball and littered the street with shrapnel. Heavy black smoke poured from burning wreckage at the site.

The armored personnel carrier, known as a Rhino was sandwiched between of a convoy of mine-resistant military vehicles traveling on a four-lane highway frequently used by NATO forces in a southwestern section of the city.

NATO said 13 service members were killed, but a U.S. official confirmed they were all Americans. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

The Afghan Ministry of Interior said three Afghan civilians and one policeman also died in the attack. Eight other Afghans, including two children and four other civilians, were wounded, said Kabir Amiri, head of Kabul hospitals.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the Kabul attack, as well as for another suicide bombing outside a government intelligence office in the northwest province of Kunar.

The attack occurred near the entrance of the American University and the nearby landmark Darulaman Palace, the bombed-out seat of former Afghan kings.

13 Americans Killed in Afghanistan

NATO and Afghan forces sealed off the area as fire trucks and ambulances rushed in. An Associated Press reporter at the scene saw two NATO helicopters landing to airlift casualties, while coalition troops using loudspeakers ordered bystanders to evacuate the area.

It was the deadliest single attack against the U.S.-led coalition since the Taliban shot down a NATO helicopter on Aug. 6 in an eastern Afghan province, killing 30 U.S. troops, most elite Navy SEALs, and eight Afghans.

In other violence, a man wearing an Afghan military uniform opened fire on a joint NATO-Afghan base, killing three NATO service members in Uruzgan province, an area in the restive south that is traditionally viewed as the Taliban’s stronghold.

Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman Mohammad Zahir Azimi said officials were investigating whether the shooter, who was killed in the incident, was a member of the Afghan army or a militant wearing an army uniform.

More troops killed in a useless war on behalf of stone age moslems. Let us get out of Obama’s, Clinton’s, McCain’s war as soon as possible. And let us stop using the ruse when soldiers are killed that they are Nato casualties; this is a way of obscuring the fact that every soldier that is killed is in fact an American; there are no German, French, Italian casualties because they do not fight. End the war now and bring all the troops home not only from mideast but also from Europe and Asia.

We have an obligation to the world….sending our young men and women is a small price to pay. Oh “PAY” nah we just borrow the money for this small sacrifice.

Kind of funny how when Obama got elected, Code Pink hushed their mouths. Also interesting that the MSM stopped with giving the numbers of US soldiers killed.

Also interesting that wet behind the ears, no military experience, no leadership experience, anti Iraq war, candidate Obama spouted that Iraq was the wrong war at the wrong time, and that Afghanistan was the right war at the right time. No one in the MSM wanted to remind him that Empires have collapsed from fighting in Afghanistan. Alexander the Great, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union all took a swing and failed. You will also notice that the surge Obama put into Afghanistan was not aimed at getting OBL, it was geard toward nation building. You can not make chicken salad from chicken crap.

there are plenty of NATO troops in Afghanistan, and most are a wast of time and space, and provide little to nothing. The Brits and Canadians were the only NATO troops that were of much use when I was there last year. I believe it was the Italians and Spanish that were paying off the taliban not to hit them, in return for them no actually doing anything other than building fancy FOBs to live on.

Suck it up, dude. Had we had that attitude during WWII, where do you think we would be today? That attitude caused the slaughter in Vietnam after the liberals pulled the rug out from under the South’s feet and now you propose the same in this case…sad to see that American’s have grown soft and mushy. By the way, I am both a Vietnam and Iraqi Freedom Veteran so I’m not just blowing smoke.

65% of the Casualties are American. I expect as the war goes on that percentage will be higher.

1,757 American deaths in Afghanistan, which 39% of the deaths in Iraq. But you wouldn’t know it, because the LSM does not report a death count every night with a a Democrat President.

The execrable Liberal press & the rest of the left always says there are no coalition forces. They said the same of Iraq. Then they crowed every time the browbeat a country into pulling out like Spain & Honduras, which showed their lie.

Actually, it‘s America’s war. So what happens when we leave? How about the same thing that happened when the Russians left. Taliban gets stronger, Alkida moves back in, plots and trains for another 9/11 against us and there we are right back over there again kicking ass. This cycle will not pass until we eradicate all those who want us dead. Like it or not, it’s us or them. There is no middle ground, that’s just a waste land of decapitated bodies.

I’ve been saying for awhile now its time to come home and say we did the best we could for these people. We kicked some serious butt but we cannot stay there forever and we cannot ultimately defeat these people by merely waiting them out because we cannot kill them all. This is cannot be a War of attrition and its just not gonna happen that way. It can only be a War of absolute desolation and firm resolve. We will never do that so it is time we count our dead, pay them tribute and move on. God Bless the families of the fallen in this bombing.

One thing I find interesting is before we invaded, the Taliban had nearly wiped out the opium production in that country. One year after we invade (and the subsequent years) and they have record crops. Why are we allowing them to produce record levels of opium when heroin is at nearly epidemic levels in this country?
Opium fields do not move or change their appearance like Taliban; we would have no problem eradicating the opium poppy if we wanted to…

The Muslim animals only understand one thing, force. The solution to this is when they kill one of ours; we kill one thousand of theirs. If we run out of theirs, tough luck! I do not like Muslims and I do not want to trade any of our troops for theirs. Bring our troops home and nuke the place. We should have done that to start with. A single tactical nuke at Kandahar would have cleaned out the whole upper echelon of the Al-Qaida and the Taliban leaders. This would have sent a message to the whole terrorist world that we mean business. Bush blew it big time.

We wouldn’t have been able to drop a nuke on them. It would lead to the muslim world throwing one back at us asap. With Iran, pakistan, and the connectivity of the world these days, they’d really accelerate prioritizing the acquisition a nuke if we dropped one. For humanity (and the animal world), there cannot be any nukes attacks from any country anymore.

As much as it pains we to say it, you might have a point. It took burning two cities to ash to stop the equally fanatic Japanese, and that level of force might be required to stop these zealots as well. It’s time to stop playing games and show this wannabe empire what the price of a real war is. And when their mothers and sisters are drowning in the blood of their husbands, fathers and brothers they will learn their lesson.

Exactly right! What was the mission of the undeclared war to begin with? Kill the terrorists? Try again. Iraq and Afghanistan are the biggest theatrical productions I have ever seen. This is not a war, it’s a dog and pony show run by corporations for profit. It only took the United States and it’s allies four (4) years to defeat Germany and Japan on two fronts. (My father was a B-25 pilot in the Pacific killing Japanese left and right.)

I had a commander in the Marine Corps, a Lt. Colonel, that said, “If you’re not going to move through the objective, kick @$$ and take names, then plant the Stars and Stripes on the high ground then don’t bother.” That, my friends, is my idea of winning a war. What is happening in Iraq and Afghanistan is bravo sierra and waste of American lives, time, and a huge amount of money.

In the end we will walk away with what? End to the drugs being manufactured in Afghanistan? Nope! New occupied territory and oils for the United States? Nope! More control over the “terrorists” and other enemies of the U.S.? Nope! We walk away with nothing. What a deal.

Now the Border Patrol is letting the Canadian border pretty much go as well. This is nuts.

We need the military back home to guard our borders. Especially the National Guard that has no business even being overseas. they need to be on the southern border protecting the U.S. citizens from the Mexican invasion.

We either need to get out now or drastically change our tatics and Rules of Engagement.

Amen. Drill, baby, drill, and get our military home. If they want to fight to the death, so be it, we have enough trouble in our back yard that we don’t need our nose in a fight that has been going on for years and years. Pray for our military, police, firemen/women and border patrol, things are heating up, by design, and they need all of our prayers, as does THIS country.

@Grandmaof5 — it is long past time for our troops to come home; Obama has put the leashes back on to ensure the war is lost completely, and I expect him to put the full blame on them while claiming he won the war until the troops lost it.

Yes, God bless them, as the conservative GOP/bank/military machine sends them to slaughter.
Do you not see your part in causing this?
I saw my part and it turned my stomach. I’m an staunchly anti-war (except for defense).
This is very graphic, but do you want to see Libya, the American killing of civilians/children?
Everyone that supports a war candidate is guilty of this:
      YOU TUBE DELETED THE VIDEO!
It was children killed in a village during America’s “liberation of Libya”
      Sickening!

I saw a sign just like this at an OWS rally here in Tampa, Florida on the way to work. Was that YOU VECHORIK wearing that leftist Code Pink tee shirt? Ron Paul supporters and Code Pink are quite the cosy leftists.

@Vechorik — for the record, OBAMA the DEMOCRAT MADMAN is the one that gave Libya to the terrorists, not the GOP. Get your facts straight before ranting and raving…the GOP is not in power, OBAMA IS, and HE sent our troops into harms way.

Your screen name says you’re a conservative. I suggest you research the concept and realize you are closer to the liberal neo-conservative agenda than you are to true conservatism (as the founding fathers were). Then your screen name and comments wouldn’t be so conflicting (ignorant) in nature.

LMAO> You VECHORIK. The Libertarian Party/Ideology has more in common with the “New Left” these days more so than it does with the “Old Right.” You can wish yourselves the title of being the children of the Founding Fathers, but just like the left has corrupted our society over the years… Libertarians corrupt the memory of those men by not being able to move into the reality of the world as it is today. A Libertarian society will further this Liberal corruption of our society in the name of Libertine Liberty and Freedom as just a mask for further continuance of self indulgance, self importance and eventually… self destruction.

Take Ron Paul’s endless years in Congress… the Founding Fathers would be rolling in their graves.
