13 Arrested for Protesting Against Alabama’s Immigration Law

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (The Blaze/AP) — Police arrested 13 protesters in Alabama’s capital Tuesday as they demonstrated against the state’s strict new law clamping down on illegal immigrants.

About 100 people, most of them Hispanic and college-aged, chanted slogans as they marched in light rain around the state Capitol and to the adjacent Statehouse where the legislature works.

“Undocumented, unafraid,“ ”No papers, no fear, immigrants are marching here,“ and ”Ain’t no power like the power of the people,” were among the slogans the protestors chanted as they marched. Later, some were hauled off to jail in a yellow bus normally used by the city parks and recreation department.

Some sat down on Union Street between the Statehouse and the Capitol when police approached and warned them in English and Spanish that they would be arrested if they didn’t move.

None did and police arrested 11 demonstrators, tying their hand with yellow straps and loading them into the bus.

Federal courts have blocked parts of the Republican-backed law from taking effect, but both supporters and critics still call it the nation’s toughest state law against illegal immigration. The Obama administration opposes the law, which is calls an overreach by the state.

Similarly, many in the faith community have also come out in opposition to the strict measures that are present within the law. Christian leaders, among others, have been encouraging congregants to speak out.

One of those arrested at yesterday’s protest was 19-year-old Catalina Rios, a student at Henry Ford Community College in Detroit. She identified herself an illegal immigrant from Mexico.

Looking like a typical American teenager with her long dark hair in a ponytail, Rios said she knew there was a possibility she might be deported as she sat in the street waiting to be arrested.

“I know that I live in fear every single day of that, so this is no different,” Rios said. “I’m doing this for all the immigrant students who struggle every day.”

A Montgomery attorney who volunteered to represent those arrested, Mike Winter, said he understood they were mostly being charged with disturbing the peace, but also could be held for immigration officials.

After walking all the way around the Capitol one time, about 20 protesters entered the Statehouse and went up to the seventh-floor office of state Sen. Scott Beason, R-Gardendale, a key proponent of the law.

Once downstairs, two of the demonstrators – college students Ernesto Zumaya, 24, of Los Angeles and Caesar Marroquin, 21, of Philadelphia – linked arms and sat down on the floor of the main lobby. They vowed not to leave until Beason responded to their concerns. Beason did not respond to the protest and Zumaya and Marroquin were arrested peacefully when the building closed for the day.

Both said they are immigrants from Mexico without papers who have lived in the U.S. most of their lives. Marroquin said he always wanted to be a U.S. Marine.

Beason said later that he was not in his office Tuesday afternoon and did not immediately get the message except being told there were people at the Statehouse to see him.

Beason defended the law when asked about the protest.

“My intention is to enforce what’s already in place in federal law,” Beason said. “I make no apologies. I’m trying to do what I feel is best for the people of Alabama.”

A leader of the protest, Mohammad Abdollahi, who said he was an immigrant without papers from Iran who lives in Bessemer, explained that the purpose of the demonstration was for their voice “to be heard.”

Agreed. I do not understand why ‘illegal alien” is such a difficult concept for these people to comprehend. I have no problem with immigrants following law and doing this correctly… in fact, I am glad to see that happen. But, this nonsense of us putting up with illegality just makes no sense whatsoever.

Let’s get some real pro-American people in our governments all over the country and start turning this ridiculousness around.

I was referencing the article above which reads that the Churches oppose the new law.

You point is in error. The Church is not a building, or a bureaucracy, or an artificial construct. The Church Is The Members.
The same is true of Government. The Government Is The People. The government is me and you and our neighbors.

Ah, but if you take away the building nobody would take it seriously as a church, In theory you don‘t need a building to be a Church because in God’s eyes it is that way, but in reality and practice it is the opposite, you much have a building, a leader, a set time of worship, programs of one type of another, etc.

Being tied to that necessarily weakens the bond to truth whenever having any of those aforementioned tenets of the “real church” comes in contrast to Biblical examples, Biblical Ideology and the like, which over time degrades into the leader telling people what they want to hear. After all, if we got rid of our leader or our building or our set times, we would no longer be a “real church” so, truth is compromised and the power of God’s People is weakened to the point of non-effectiveness.

hence, I agree that the church can do nothing, it’s only a building.

Sorry to bring the facts back to your argument, but Hokey religions and faith have nothing to do with this issue. This is a legal issue. People that are not supposed to be here, ARE here. BY LAW, they are to be deported back to the country from whence they came.

If people from other countries want to live and work in the USA then they need to become LEGAL abiding citizens. By not pursuing this route, they prove to us that they believe they are above the law. And I don’t know about you, but thats not the kind of people I feel comfortable living around.

I want to move to Japan, but I have to do a few things before I can do so (like learning Japanese) and I fully intend to do so BEFORE I go there. Which shows much more respect for their country and culture, than some border hopping illegal who doesn’t even care enough about America to learn or speak the American language. Rather, THEY insist that WE learn THEIR language (preposterous)!! Instead they want us all to ignore their thumbing their noses at the America they flock to so they can live a better life than where they came from. If you want to stay here PROVE IT!

Become Legal, Get a Job, Pay Taxes.. If you do that, you can stay.. if not GET OUT!

I believe in GOD, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit , but I do not believe everything the chruches say or does, for the churches are run by man (the spieces of mankind), and we all man can become corrupted! So when I go to church (which isnt that offten) I pray to GOD; not the precher. I go to church for GOD and pray for my loved ones, the soilders at war and what I’m thankfull for in this life. So plaese just don’t take the word(s) of the churches, because I believe they have been corrupted.

Why should we (tax payers) pay for illegals to live here in American? I sure as hell don’t want to!!! This law Alabama and the other states are passing is ready a FEDERAL LAW!!! States are making it a law so they too, can weed out the illegals. Whether they be Mexicans, Canadians, ect…
It‘ll open more jobs to US citiezens that don’t have one. But poeple the are against this bill will say they/we do the work you (white poeple) don’t want; Yes that‘s ture but if we don’t take those jobs and we say “naw I don’t want that job”, then you should will NEVER be able to get gov’t $ to live on again!

PS We should drug test poeple on walfare, or any other person(s) on gov’t care.

Read about Moses and the Israelites traveling throughout the desert and other nations… they asked to be allowed to cross these borders…recognizing their existence. Perhaps these churches should read their Bible before they support Socialist/ feel good issues!!

MARYBETHELIZABETH, you need to learn the difference between a church and a church. You see, a little enlightenment for you, all groups of people who call themselves a church, are not necessarily, a church. Just as all leaders in churches who call themselves Pastors, are not Pastors. Strange isn’t it, but also true. Pretty much all “churches” which belong to the World Council of Churches, are in that category of “churches” that are not really a church. You say according to whom? Might want to take a trek through the Bible. Rather than going into a great expose of who isn’t and who is, let’s just say those who live the teachings of Christ and not just expound upon them are part of a real church, and this is not a pick and choose thing, but the full gospel, all the time.

Then there is the problem with those churches that are for real that fall into error because they let themselves be deceived by the devil. Yes the devil is for real and a quite wily creature, actually a fallen angel -one of the elite three at one time. Blew it big time!

Be careful before you take the position that if “the churches” are for or against something, so should you be. It can get you in a lot of trouble.

The reason the churches are pro illegal alien, especially the catholic church, is because of their dwindling domestic congregations , i come from a family of nine, we all went to catholic schools , and none of us are now practicing catholics, the scandals and weird church doctrine turn all of us off to catholisism, so their future growth is with hispanics, along with future donations. This is not a protest of citizens. This is occupation by foreign nationals. They do not have the right to protest our laws. They can go back to Mexico and protest the laws there or they can become legal immigrants, but not both. And before it starts, this has nothing to do with race. I do not care if they are here as long as it’s done legally.

How would the people of Mexico or Iran feel if I went there and protested their laws? I would be beheaded in Iran and hung on a bridge in Mexico. It’s ridiculous to think that as a foreigner, you can come here to protest our laws. If they try it, send them back.

I understand the financial burden the states have taking care of illegals with social services and paying for their schools.
I feel we need real reform where we eliminate welfare to illegals and legals. We need to stop paying people not to work, stop paying ponzi scheme pensions, and stop giving people social security who didn’t pay into the system and so on. The illegals take more money from the system than my mom who worked 40 years gets from social security. Totally wrong.
BUT, my kids played basketball down at the Mexican
Catholic school yesterday. The illegal kids are so sweet and their sisters were so cute cheering. They have great manners. They are God’s creation and and made my heart melt.
There has to be a way to legally allow them to come and pay taxes and not get social services.

The Hispanics that I know are sweet loving people who raise their children to respect other people. But by being in our state as illegals, they are breaking the law. What comes next, someone coming to my house and claiming it as theirs, just because it’s better than the one they have? This has to be made right by them applying for citizenship through proper channels. If that means that they have to leave for a while, so be it. I will welcome them back when they come here legally.

I understand your Emotional Concern… and before there were Entitlements and funded Socail Programs, which the Tax Payers provide… I would not have cared… but when you take from me to give to someone else, alike a criminaI Robin Hood, I care and I oppose you!

Please note I said the social services must be zero before having a LEGAL way to be vetted and get into the country. I do not condone breaking the law. I was trying to think of solutions to the problem.
I do not approve of the status quo or amnesty. I stopped my support for perry when he said to have a heart.
LukerW sums up what I was trying to say.
As far as Muslims, they should not EVER be granted citizenship because their Koran tells them to commit jihad.

The muslims seem to turn up everywhere. Mohammad Abdollahi admitted he was an illegal alien from Iran and he is a leader of this protest. Where is ICE? Whenever an illegal alien is identified that person should be deported to their home country immediately. I believe that people should be treated with dignity and respect as they are being deported. For me the issue is illegal not race. I do have an issue with country of origin. I don’t want anyone from a muslim country allowed entry for any reason.

Guess Catalina wouldn’t be living in fear, and struggling everyday if she’d come in the front door. Wonder if her tuition is in-state or out-of-state? Then there is ol’ Mohammad Abdollah, one of the protest leaders: Guess he came up from the South, eh? Muslims illegally entering the US from Mexico…Wonder if they were mules for Holder?

Here we go down the same road once again. Interesting that we have these protesters being arrested and making front line news on the networks; while we have audio and vidoe of the OWS groups stating they are coercing parts of the military to aid in the coming revolution.

Isn`t Hope And Change great. I don`t know if this country will be able to be turned around. We`ve gone from the Greastest Country in the world to the arm pit of the world. I feel for my children and their future. We`ve got people from Mexico who aren`t supposed to be here protesting our laws. Unbelievable.
