12 Dead After Gunman Opens Fire at Midnight Showing of New Batman Movie in Colo.

AURORA, Colo. (The Blaze/AP) — A gunman wearing a gas mask set off an unknown gas and fired into a crowded movie theater in suburban Denver at a midnight opening of the Batman movie “The Dark Knight Rises,” killing 12* people and injuring at least 50 others, authorities said.

The violent and chaotic scene erupted about 12:30 a.m. MDT as a gunman stood at the front of one of the Century 16 theaters at the Aurora Mall where the latest Batman movie “The Dark Knight Rises” was playing, police said.

“Witnesses tell us he released some sort of canister. They heard a hissing sound and some gas emerged and the gunman opened fire,” Oates said at a news conference.

It was the worst mass shooting in Colorado since the Columbine High School massacre on April 20, 1999. Students Eric Harris, 18, and Dylan Klebold, 17, opened fire at the school in the Denver suburb of Littleton, about 15 miles west of Aurora, killing 12 classmates and a teacher and wounding 26 others before killing themselves in the school’s library.

Aurora police spokesman Frank Fania on ABC’s “Good Morning America” said he didn’t know yet if all the injuries were gunshot wounds. He said some might have been caused by other things such as shrapnel.

KUSA-TV posted an interview with two witnesses who told a similar story about a man dressed in all black and a bullet proof vest who barged in through the emergency exit. After throwing some sort of device that exploded, that’s when he opened fire. But people did not react right away because, they said, they thought it was an act that was part of the movie:

“He looked so calm when he did it,” the eyewitness said. “It was like scary. He waited for both the bombs to explode before he did anything. Then, after both of them exploded, he began to shoot.”

The witnesses said he – at first – fired into the air and then started shooting towards the people.

“He had no specific target. He just started letting loose,” the eyewitness said.

Both witnesses said one of the scariest parts was the shooter didn’t say a word.

“Honestly, I thought I was gonna get shot,” the eyewitness said. “I thought there was no way I was going to get out of there without getting shot.”

The “Today” show interviewed another witness who tells the incredible story of the gunmen pointing his weapon at her but not firing after she dove for the aisle:

Police, ambulances and emergency crews swarmed on the scene after frantic calls started flooding the 911 switchboard, officials said.

Officers found the gunman near a car behind the theater.

“A gas mask, rifle, handgun at least one additional weapon (were) found inside” he said.

The suspect was taken into custody, but no name was released. Oates said there’s no evidence of any other attackers. There was also no immediate word of any motive.

The suspect spoke of “possible explosives in his residence. We are dealing with that potential threat,” Oates said, without providing details on where that was.

Reuters reports other outlets have said the shooter may be in his early 20s and fired anywhere from 10-20 shots. The local Fox affiliate, KDVR-TV, reports he is a “24-year-old white male.”

He said police also checked for explosives in the parking lot and theater, and secured those areas.

Witness Hayden Miller told KUSA that he was inside Theater 16 and heard several shots.

“Like little explosions going on and shortly after that we heard people screaming,” he told the station.

Hayden said at first he thought it was part of a louder movie next door. But then he saw “people hunched over leaving theater.”

Another witness describes seeing an officer carrying out a motionless little girl in the aftermath:

The police chief said 10 victims died at the theater and four at area hospitals.

Two people in critical condition were rushed to nearby Swedish Medical Center, spokeswoman Nicole Williams said.

She said emergency crews told her staff to prepare for several more patients from the shooting scene.

“We’re on standby to receive,” she said.

Aurora is on Denver‘s east side and is Colorado’s third-largest city with 327,000 residents. It is home to a large Defense Department satellite intelligence operation at Buckley Air Force Base, as well as The Children’s Hospital, the University of Colorado Hospital and a future Veterans Affairs hospital.

      How many bullets did it take to do this? 50 people injured. 14 dead. Some bullets went through theater 9 wall into theater 8 and injured people there. And you have to believe not all bullets hit a target. Anyone ?…. Only a hand gun and a rifle was reported by witnesses. Strange

      So, your brain is so entirely muddled that whenever there is a mass shooting, rather than treating it logically as an example of someone with a gun killing people, you assume that it must be a conspiracy to make people think that people with guns kill people.

      There are a number of friends of mine that live in the area, that would likely have gone to the movie, and whom I have yet to have heard from. I have yet to go to sleep, I’ve just stayed awake listening to the news. I’m not in the best of moods, I’m not certain when I will go to sleep, perhaps when I finally hear from one of my friends at least.

If you take a look at the chart you will see that gun ownership NEVER makes violent crime rate go up, but it often goes down as a result of that gun ownership…get educated and wake up! Its one of those crazy facts of human nature, when you ban guns then the only people that have them are the CRIMINALS!

      @RGFROMTEXAS You left out a key statistic. Post the guns per capita figure next to these gun fatality figures. This would tell the complete story. It will be interesting to see the posts here. The suspect was white so that will take away an angle from the “blacks are responsible” from some. How sad it is that people are waiting to see what his background is so they can make inferences about the PRESIDENT, Romney, Democrats, Republicans, etc. But its early so most will wait for either GB or Rush to tell them who really is responsible for this. Certainly not the suspect alone.

      I can’t think of a worse situation tactically. Even if some of the audience had been carrying, it’s doubtful it would have made much of a difference.

      The guy entered the theater from the front, and with the normal theater slope his legs, thighs and groin, would have been covered by the chair backs. He was wearing body armor which covered his abdomen, chest, and shoulders. He was wearing a riot helmet, and if it was the kevlar type, his face and head were covered.

      So even if some of the audience was armed, he has all the advantages. The best you could hope for would be a decent arm shot unless you got a lucky angle into the neck. But remember he’s a moving target firing a shotgun into a screaming mass of people in a darkened theater. Plus everyone is choking on tear gas.

      This was a really bad situation.

      well “poor richard” it was a white 24 year old. So I’m sorta doubting he was a muslim. I don’t understand why someone would immediately blame someone on the left or right, for what amounts to a crazy person with guns, going crazy.

      This is the world we live in. The price of having the right to bear arms, is that occasionally someone goes nuts and kills a bunch of people, and we have to live with it. Don’t be shocked. This is hardly the first time we’ve seen this folks.

The same people were freaking out about it, and it never comes to fruition. When Virginia tech shootings happened, what changed in our gun laws? Nothing. A congresswoman was shot in the head last year, what gun law was passed? oh thats right, there wasn’t one.

      Where are all the racists on this site? So quick to weigh in on the “violence” and “criminal” side of blacks. Where’s your creed now?

      I would also like to know if the guns were obtained legally or illegally. inb4 “Liberal gun hater”, I own firearms and am proud of it.

      Romper, I think the large number of injuries is a result of people being lined up in seats. Each bullet probably hit multiple people directly and the bullets also ricocheted around too.

I thoughtI would be reading thoughtful commment and prayers for the families of the victims. what do I find instead? The same unhinged comments about Obama, OWS, the MSM and calls for more weapons to be placed in the hands of ordinary citizens. i am truly disgusted, especially at those who preemptively condemn a possible political recuperation by the administration. a lot of Blazers are already diing this on their own

      I must agree with SR1911man. Please correct me if I am wrong but I have heard on FOX that the shooter was in the theatre for 10 minutes. He walked in wearing a gas mask, he had to have been seen, and for 10 minutes he was shooting people in this theatre, then he calmly walks out to his vehicle and waits for the cops. I have to ask, if he was in the theatre for 10 MINUTES, why were the cops not already there when he calmly walked out to his car? There wasnt ONE police officer within less than a ten minute drive? NOT ONE? BS. This stinks. Every police officer was more than ten minutes away when driving at high speed with lights a sirens? BS. This while we are on the cusp of Obama signing a treaty with the UN to take away our rights to own weapons? Not one cop less than 10 minutes away from this theatre. Yea I believe everything I am told blindly. I have lived in places it would have taken 30+ minutes for police to get to, sure, but it would have taken me 40 minutes to get to a theatre!!!!       I put this shooter in the same category as the Northern Illinois University shooter.

      IMHO they are both people who when they washed out of graduate school took their frustration out on society. Many people are of the mindset that if you are not in the trades & you wash out of university then they might as well stick a fork in you because you are done. You will not pass go, collect $200, have the house with the white picket fence or a family.

      Also like the NIU shooter this guys “appears” to have psychiatric problems. His mother was unsurprised about what he had done.

      If this guy booby trapped his apartment like the police currently believe that he has, then banning guns will not stop him. Note the Columbine shooters had IEDs.They rigged propane tanks to explode. They failed.

      I am telling you now that if you ban gun s people will figure out how to make IEDs out of propane tanks or other times and there will be mass casualty events. Then there will be copy cats.

      To believe otherwise is to deny the truth.

      thankyou for completely misrepresenting the content of my post. i did not advocate gun control, I mereley pointed out that putting more guns in the hands of ordinary citizens was not exactly a solution to gun violence.       Affluence and the ability to buy drugs or be involved in evil is the problem. Guns are not the reason for murders, the people behind the murders using guns are the cause. As a nation in which the average poor own cars, big screen tvs, eat three squares a day we are becoming jaded to real suffering and so must create our own through a society that has largely become soul-less. We push God from the public forum and replace Him with sex, drugs, and all manner of hedonistic evil.

      The rate of this type of insane malcontent performing his/her final act of revenge is happening at a rate that indicates we are done as a society that can go places without having to arm ourselves to shoot back at the lunatics who come at us.

      Supposing an armed sane person had put a bullet between the eyes of this lunatic after his first act of lunacy-popping a smoke grenade in a packed theater- then we would have reverse body count and an impressioned lunatic crowd made knowledgeable that actions of terror should very well resort in hot lead quickly penetrating and snuffing out any further thoughts of murder/suicide in their diseased brains.

      Reports are that the shooter was in the theatre for up to 15 minutes and the police chief states they were there within one and a half minutes. So nobody that saw this man walk into the theatre with guns called the cops for 13 minutes??????????? The people that work in the lobby and the snack counter either didnt see him or they chose not to call the cops for 13 minutes? All of this while we are on the cusp of a treaty being signed with the UN that will take away the rights of Americans to own guns. I smell something rotten.

      I wonder if anyone in there had a gun on them? This is why we need to stay armed at all times. Not sure how much it would have made a difference considering he had full body armor. Knees, face, heels, wrists could have been hit, but nearly impossible. Crazy situation in the dark with tear gas…doubt anybody could have hit those areas. Then again it’s better than not having a chance.

      I do agree that Terrorist is hardly a threat to us in everyday USA, but I hate the whole Gun Death statistic is a ploy to rid guns of private people to allow for total government control. You should look at the Murder Rates in total and it will show a different picture. If you took USA and removed inner city crime, it would be less than most western cultures, in part because people in the suburbs and rural American is armed.

      12 Dead ones in a blue moon vs. 25+ on average pr weekend in Chicago, where it is practicable illegal to own / carry a gun. Look at DC for similar statistics.

      The inner city violence is not a matter of race as it is failed social policies, as we have seen now for generations with American Indians. The same problems we see in the inner cities one can see in whole countries in Western Europe as they have moved towards socialism since WW2.

      England Banned the Ownership of Hand Guns in 1997. by 2003 the Murder Rate by Hand Gun rose by 40%.

      Government cannot protect you from such evil. There are plenty of sick/evil people out there and this kind of thing will happen regardless of God or any law. The individual can only protect themselves and has the innate, inherent right to do so in any venue. If there were local laws keeping people from this right than the people need to correct that if they want better outcomes. If civilians were armed someone could have taken this guy out as soon as he fired the first shot. Blame lies squarely on the perpetrator and you should fight any effort that doesn’t allow for individuals to protect themselves.

      Just watch… rather than do the sane thing, the authorities will continue to push to disarm innocents and blame the gun rather than the sick man that committed this atrocity.

      Ultimately, YOU should thank God that you weren‘t there and that more weren’t hurt or killed.

      What a travesty, I pray for all who have have been affected by this evil.

      Someone who can shoot back distracts the gunman long enough for more people to escape. It would have been over more quickly if the gunman were surprised by a bunch of people who could shoot back. He absolutely did not expect anyone to be able to shoot back and he was right. Let’s surprise these perpetrators next time! Look how shocked those two boys were in Florida when that 71yo man shot back. They couldn’t get out of there fast enough!

      That post is far beneath what even a modestly reasonable person would post.

      He meant to act as a protector. Most theaters have Criminal Protection Zone signs posted all about them, in other words “No guns allowed here” signs. Not all, but most. If that’s the case here, there was nobody legally able to rise in defense, since only law abiding people follow those signs, yet the criminal himself certainly didn’t care about them. Given as *nobody* was reported to have drawn and fired at this madman, I suspect my hunch about the signs is correct.

      My wife and I are going to see this same movie tonight. The neighborhood theater has no such signage, so I can guarantee that at least one person will be present who is armed, law abiding, and well trained if copycats decide to get in on the action.

Those witnesses also say, he had one hand gun. That story will have to change, that’s not going to fly. Lucky they heard police yell “ get down”.

      The shooter will be a right wing extremist, who listens to Rush Limbaugh. since Rush pointed out the idea that the villain is BAIN CAPITAL in the movie the shooter is targeting the liberals. This story will continue for weeks and weeks the news will cover this and ask the question, “Do we know Romney didn’t meet this shooter at a convention?       @Mil-Dot: The 2nd amendment has nothing to do with “my right” to protect myself with a firearm. It just allows me to be legal in the eyes on the state. People do and will carry regardless of any law.       Your complaint is that the media doesn’t come out and say “it must be Islamic terrorists!” even before there is evidence? Do you actually understand what “news” is? It’s not just making things up.

      In all of those examples, the media did report the actual details when they were confirmed. That’s what the media does. And, for your information, according to the official classifications used by the government, hispanics are classified as white.

    This was a most certainly a planned military style attack! I have heard intel that has suggested his ethnic background and even motive, but I will wait and see. The truth will slowly start to surface! This is more reason to be armed not less! All these people could do was call the almighty 911 and wait to be rescued! NO THANKS! To bad there was nobody with a concealed carry, Maybe less people would be suffering today!

    1. Were the weapons used in this incident sold by Eric Holder and Obama during the Fast and Furious program?

    2. Is the assailant an illegal alien? What’s his name? The cops know. Why won’t they release the name?

    3. Is the assailant Muslim, maybe a member of one of the organizations named as an “unindicted co-conspirator” in the Holy Land Foundation trial?

    4. Will James Clapper, Director of National Intelligence, declare that the shooter belongs to a group that “eschews violence?”

    The White House “spin doctors” are already working on the press release. Maybe just another case of “workplace violence?”

    My question I need to ask is this, with the number of big count shootings going on lately, is there an growing series of copycat events; or are we seeing the first and opening moves of something larger? I can see some band of terrorists that Obama has allowed to come into the US start doing such chaos and massacres to stir up yet more and more trouble as the elections come closer…

    I just cannot get we are seeing an Obamamian move similiar to the movie of Chuck Norris called ‘Invasion USA” where terrorists carried forth attacks on the nation.

    For that matter, expect him and the leftists to howl that this is a reason for more gun control and the surrender of yet more of our liberties.

      I respectfully disagree. I read your posts TXPatriot and we agree on most issues.

      What was this murderer’s motive? It doesn’t matter.

      Does he deserve a speedy trial? Yes.

      I suggest that if there were more than just a few (the Bible says 2 or 3), but let’s be safe and say half a dozen who could identify him as the one man who was wearing a bullet-proof vest and gas mask with a rifle as the one who committed the murders, then he is guilty. And swift punishment should be administered, which the police could have carried out immediately.

    CNN quoted one witness as saying he saw a “guy slowly making his way up the stairs and firing, picking random people”.

    Police arrested a male suspect in the parking lot behind the theatre, police spokesman Frank Fania said. “He did not resist, he did not put up a fight,” he said. The suspect’s apartment building has been evacuated.

    The suspect was though to be in his early 20s, Fania said. He was carrying a knife, a rifle, a handgun when arrested and one other gun was recovered from the theatre, he said. The gunman was also wearing a bulletproof vest.

Now, since here in Ohio, you can‘t carry a concealed gun into a movie theater I am assuming you can’t in Colorado also. My question is, just how does being unarmed make you safer?       Florida says we can’t carry concealed in banks, schools, sports stadiums. I know it’s illegal to CCW in post offices and federal buildings, also. Is the theater thing part of your law, or is it the policy of the theater owner?

      Florida does not restrict carry at Banks. I carry while at the bank all the time. As a matter of fact banks/ATM’s are one of the more likely places that you are going to encounter a threat.
