15-Year-Old Behind Blaze Story on Girl Scouts Speaks Out: ‘We Were So Deceived’

On Tuesday, we broke the story of the Girl Scouts using one of its books to direct young girls to the liberal site Media Matters to combat media misinformation. The story took off, with everyone from Fox News to the Drudge Report covering it. The girl at the center of the story was 15-year-old Sydney Volanski, who first noticed the Media Matters reference last year and left the organization over it. Now, Sydney is speaking out.

Sydney joined the crew of “Fox & Friends” on Thursday morning to explain what she found and also to talk about her website, “Speak Now: Girl Scouts Website,” which she co-edits and that was set up to expose other liberal bias within the Scouts.

“My sister and I started a website to help inform families of the more leftward leanings of Girl Scouts because they promise to be neutral politically and about certain social issues,” she explained, “but when you examine the women that they promote and the websites and books that they refer girls to, there is a clear liberal ideology, like with the Media Matters site.”

“With Speak Now: Girl Scouts we’re just trying to spread awareness to families because we were so deceived,” she added. “For eight years we were in Girl Scouts and we didn’t realize that Girl Scouts was promoting such a liberal ideology.”

Sydney went on to claim the Scouts have promoted Planned Parenthood and abortion advocacy groups in the past, using that as example of more liberal bias in the organization.

On a side note, Girl Scouts spokesperson Michelle Tompkins — who did not answer any of our follow-up inquiries — did give a statement to Fox saying that the organization’s material is regularly reviewed and updated and that upcoming versions of the book will not include references to Media Matters. That’s similar to what we were told. However, there are still plenty more questions we asked, such as how Media Matters came to be placed in the book, who wrote the page that the reference appears on and what group, if any, will replace Media Matters once the new publications are released.

    I pulled my daughter out of GS when her group leader started to make anti-Semitic remarks about the Jewish girls in the troop. i called her on it and her response was that if I didn’t like the way she was running the troop, to take my daughter elsewhere. This kind of thing has been going on for a long time and it finally took this young woman to expose what the GS had become.

      Being a girl scout was so traumatic for me – they are just as secular as they can be. Not even Sarah Palin could be a Girl Scout, and she is a fighter. Michelle Bachmann wanted to be a Girl Scout when she was Catholic, but after converting to Christianity she never let her 23 foster girls join this totally godless, Ayn Rand-loving organization.

The way many parents neglect the up bringing of their children, leaving it up to the system to educate them and literally program them.       When it was time for my daughter to bridge from Brownies to Juniors (2004), there was no troop available so I volunteered and went through the training. It became clear right away that Girl Scouts had changed since I was a kid – and not for the better. Our family decided to pull her out of scouts because the clear anti-Christian, liberal agenda would undermine what we were teaching at home.

      BTW, Monicne, I have been a Catholic Christian for ten years. Before that, I was an Evangelical Christian. My husband was a pastor and we both went to Evangelical Christian colleges. You might want to be careful not to use “Christian” as a replacement term for “Protestant”; while contrasting it with “Catholic”.

      I realize there is still quite a bit of anti-Catholic bias out there, and an innocent mistake like this could be very offensive to some people. Certainly in this day and age, Christian believers need to focus on what unites us rather than what divides us. It is helpful to recall that those who profess the historic creeds – Nicene, Apostolic, etc – are our brothers and sisters in Christ.

      This is one brave girl to be going up against the liberal agenda. Especially when it comes to the Soros funded mediamatters, and the MSM loved planned parenthood. She is also very intelligent too, getting her points across very clear and even managing to explain everything really well in great detail. Thank you for letting the population know about the agenda of the Girl Scouts, I know I won’t buy anymore of their cookies.

      All I had to do was glance at the handbook to realize the ungodliness and really worthlessness of the organization. It has been very interesting to see the transistion by picking up older books and comparing to today.

      I guess we can say HOORAH to the Boy Scouts who have stayed much truer to the original intent of SCOUTing (probably, due to the strong Mormon parental and scout leadership and I am not a Mormon– just a Christian who can give a compliment and recognize valor) not “community organizing”.

      I didn’t let my daughters be girl scouts but my sons and husband are involved in boy scouts. There is a Christian badge earning program for projects developed for boys (Contenders) and girls (Keepers) from “Keepers of the Faith” We are involved because no interest in our area and no fun being in a troop of just 2!

      @Female I am sad to say that the Boy Scouts may not be far behind. My young boys just started Tiger Cubs and being an Eagle Scout myself I was exited to have them do it and be with them on outings. Was that is until we just went on our first Fall camp out. They had a “Service” Sunday morning and I say service in quotes because to be quite honest it was beyond “non-denominational” to the point that I really don’t know what you would call it. It was sad and a complete trashing and warping of what I grew up with in Scouts who showed honor to God in many things they did. The “hymnal” they had the boys sing was “This Land Is Your Land”. Seriously??? don’t call something a “worship service” and say we are going to sing a “hymnal” and have it be “This Land Is Your Land”. Was pretty miffed at that. Not pulling my boys from Scouts but doubt I will participate or have my boys participate in anything like that again trying to call itself a “worship service”. The cancer is all around @Female unfortunately even the Boy Scouts as well I am afraid :(. Sad thing is that for the most part I realize that they are being pretty much forced to comply.

      The Scouts was a fine organization when it was Protestant Christian. That would be before the ADL, ACLU, Jewish Women’s League ripped out the Christian part that made it what it was. The Jewish Women’s thing is in Texas trying to remove three crosses off of a specialty license plate.

      We prayed, declared God, and were great patriotic citizens. The military was always on the lookout for Scouts to join as we made super soldiers. Companies once looked for this attribute as well.

      I was a Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Explorer Scout from 54-59. After my son joined the Cubs they were without a Pack Master so I took the training and became a Pack Master and held Den meetings at my house. The Scouts were already damaged goods and falling apart because of liberal sabotage. The years I speak of were 1975-77.

      Scouts were never meant to be Muslim, Jewish, Catholic, Homosexual or Socialist. Those groups have made sure it is no longer a moral organization. In addition, it receives government funds or did and with that, they should shut it down or go back to the ORIGINAL SCOUTING BOOK that helped build a nation of good men and women.

      When Churches, Kiwanis, Optimist and such were the soul supporters we were happy and did very well thank you.

      It amazes me how much misinformation abounds about Catholicism. Even if you are only interested in the Historical progression, Catholicism is the original Church of Christ and other denominations split with the Church for, various reasons. But to assert that Catholics are not Christians is to be misinformed. Catholics believe all those who are properly baptized are Christians. All Christians had better think of standing together along with the Jewish community. The real enemy is secularism.

      2. Bachmann has never been Catholic.
      3. Bachmann was Lutheren.
      4. Bachmann left her Lutheren faith (also Christian) for Catholic bashing this year. (FWIW, Catholics don’t care that every protestant religion bashes them, she still had Catholic support if she stayed with here Lutheren Faith)
      5. Bachmann is now a member of an Evangelical church (also Christian).

      If you don’t know anything about Christianity (that’s okay, your choice) or Michele Bachmann‘s faith you probably shouldn’t comment on it.

      As far as all the negative comments about Girl Scouts I can only say that I’m sorry you had such a bad experience. I have been a Girl Scout troop leader – no I’m not kidding – and our troop was focused on the girls learning they can do and accomplish whatever they want to in life. Our troop did not preach religion, nor discuss political issues, having both very right and left wing parents, and very religious and not so religious parents. It was all about the girls developing self-confidence, learning new skills and have good experiences as a group. And more than an few girls devoloped money management skills as well as experience with sales by selling the cookies. Slam your troop if you want, but don’t slam girl scouts!

Thus; we’ll have to assume that the GS are not worthy of support.       My problem with the Cub Scouts is that everyone gets an award for something. In the Pinewood Derby, they make up awards just so everyone can get one. It’s not just about winning a race anymore. I‘ve noticed it’s a bit different with my son’s Boy Scout troop. And it has Catholics, Protestants, etc. in it.

      And to the other person who seemed to claim that Catholics are the only one to follow God and not a man, not all protestant religions follow a man. Baptists are taught that we don’t need a priest to intercede for us, we can go to Jesus all by ourselves. HE is our high priest. We don‘t need a man to obsolve us of our sins by saying 5 Hail Mary’s. I do know Catholics that I consider Christians and I know Baptists that are going to be mighty surprised come judgement day. Denominations were created by Satan, to try to divide us. It has nothing to do with our relationship with God and Jesus.

      Ballyaromas! It is easy to say Roman Catholocism and True Christianity are synonomous but nothing could be further from the truth. The worship and prayer to saints, use of idols and distorted defintions of the sacraments are just the beginning. A clear works doctrine is also taught. Mary has become more revered than our Lord and simple men are somehow empowered to forgive our sins. It is no more than just another cult distorting the true Gospel message.

Many Protestants believe that throughout Church history, there have been many true Christians who were not Catholics, and these Christians were often killed by the Catholic Church. They also believe that Peter was just one of the apostles, and that the Catholic Church only copied and preserved the Bible, which God had already given to us.

      Nowhere in God’s Word does it say we are to have a pope, or pray to dead humans. We pray to God alone. Scripture tells us all Christians are the Saints of God. The catholics think they can appoint saints. The Catholics have hijacked Christianity for too long. Yes there are born again catholics, but they were not the first Christians and they don’t carry the mantle of Christianity.

      look into the Unitarian Universalism form of religion…you will find this belief is fast becoming the type of religion the Boy Scouts are promoting…I do not think it is intentional from the leadership but due to the lack of investigation into the actual young people they are hiring to provide the day to day interaction and teachings that occur at these camps. This is another example of infiltration and destruction from within…our own government is another.

      This is in response to MONCINE’s insinuation that Catholics are not Christian. As a Baptist who converted to Christianity, I can assure you that Catholics ARE Christians. There are those in the church who don’t practice Catholicism in a way that opposes Christianity, but the church denounces those actions as heretical. Michelle Bachman was a Christian before she left the Catholic Church. She is now a Protestant Christian. I think we can at least agree that the Girl Scouts organization is BS.

      @Ballyaromas many Baptists do not consider themselves Protestant or Catholic, and don’t subscribe to any creeds either (that is not to say that ALL Baptists say that they’re not Protestant, just many, including the three churches that I have been a member of; the ones I have been a member are not linked to any other church and each have their own philosophy).

      I decided not to let dd be a part of the Girl Scouts, or buy their cookies, when they started getting involved with Planned Parenthood.

      Excuse me, Monicine. Michelle Bachman was never a member of THE Catholic Church. She recently left a Lutheran church that she had attended for a decade because of claims that church was anti-Catholic. That said, one does not leave THE Catholic Church to become Christian. THE Catholic Church is THE original Christian Church; the Church founded by Jesus Christ when he gave the Keys of Heaven to Peter. THE Catholic Church wrote THE Bible used by all Christian denominations. Need to do your homework . . .

      I was a leader for several years, when the girls reached middle school and I was given the material they would soon be exposed to I pulled my girl and let everyone I knew in on the dirty little social engineering project GS had become. I am sick about what the organization has become (Juliet Lowe is spinning in her grave) I was a First Class Scout back in the day, when it meant as much as being an ES in the Boy Scouts. Heritage Girls is a great group and i hope they squash the GS. And by the way @ MONCIA I am a converted Catholic (recovering BAPTIST. It’s a two way street) and I AM A CHRISTIAN, my troop was a CATHOLIC SCHOOL TROOP….get over your evangelical self and drop the Catholic bashing rhetoric….

      It’s unfortunately going to take many more together young ladies and young men who have it together, as adults who are willing to get involved. Their whole collectivist, socialist/communist ideologies and commensurate programs and propaganda are designed to promote and support their agenda.
      The American colleges and universities are replete with leftist teachers, classes, organizations and programs, including adulterated textbooks, which is also the case in grade schools, middle schools and high schools across the country, not just to undermine our way of life, but to literally destroy it and replace it with their hellish, fiendish, destructive way of life.
      This has been well planned for years and is being orchestrated right before our eyes. The Obamaites and Hillary – It Takes a Village, Progressives(regressives) have established an almost impenetrable beachhead to destroy our country, and this can only be countered and turned back by an equally or greater commitment and force.
      This is a matter of good against evil, right against wrong, and even though some have been engaged in this war against tyranny, many more need to join the fray to turn the tide. It will not be done overnight, but it can be done. It will also require engaging the help of God.

      MONICNE – I’ve been a Boy Scout leader for 5 years now. If there are any leaders still abusing scouts, it is because other leaders are not following BSA rules. The leaders have to go through repeated training on the subject. The scouts and leaders have to watch videos on the subject and have discussions before and after the videos. All of it is very uncomfortable but I guess it is what is necessary to keep boys from being abused. Also, any adult that sleeps in a tent with a scout has to be the scout’s parent or guardian. Uncles or close family friends are not allowed. Two deep leadership is how things are to be run. No leader is supposed to be alone with a scout.

    The liberal communists have infiltrated many, if not all, established organizations in our country and it’s up to us to recognize and expose them at every turn. I was a girl scout 60 years ago during all of my pre-teen years and if there was liberal influence in the organization then, they failed miserably with me!! We need to support children who realize they are being used, and hope parents continue to provide education and guidance to their children to eradicate this perverted marxist agenda. If we don’t maintain conservative principles based on our Constitution, I believe our country will not exist in it’s current state in the very near future!!!

The Boy Scouts, the Girl Scouts, 4-H Clubs and various youth organizations had a very big role in building a country such as the Eisenhower and Reagan years espoused. Who are the best computer programmers in our country? self taught individuals because our colleges professors are so inept the can’t teach properly. See Bill Gates college dropout, and Mark Zuckerberg CEO facebook to name two.

      While our colleges produce Occuturds and charge them enourmous fees and tuitions for it. So what if someones spelling or grammer isn’t perfect, they are actually working where our professors sit around and have their lab assistants do the work.

      Perhaps you can just stop coming here and you won’t have to complain or blow a head gasket.
      It really must be tiring to be perfect everyday and never make a mistake or a typo.

      Now grant you, as reporters they should double check their writings or have others proof-read their work before posting. However, not knowing their work schedule, this might not be doable.

      You must remember these people may experience what I use to experience before I disabled my touch pad, which isn’t actually disabled. My cursor was jumping all over the place and I would be typing and then all of a sudden I would be typing where the I-bar was sitting. It is an issue on laptops running Windows 7. I have since fixed this issue and my typo’s have reduced greatly. Plus I use Firefox to post, as it highlights typos for me.

      They are only human and not as perfect as you, so lighten up.

      It does amaze me when folks get behind something so strongly that the “thing” can do no wrong. If you complain about it you’re the problem. If the Blaze were a leftist rag would you be so forgiving? I reminds me of how so many people will vote a straight part line ticket and not think twice about it. Not THINK is the keyword. Why when someone complains about a story’s grammar or spelling THEY are the bad guys? No one is complaining to the general public, I ASSume the Blaze reviews their reader’s posts. Possibly not though, since typos have become the norm here. Would you accept this from your school age child? If this were your kid’s teachers lessons or your public officials newsletter would you still be so forgiving? Perfection isn’t what I look for, just some responsibility for the article.

    As a Boy Scout leader, my troop was at a large Boy Scout owned campground that also admitted Girl Scout troops. During the evening campfire, where everyone does skits, the girls’ skits were all focused on hating boys and men. The girls’ leaders were egging them on to be more contemptuous of the boys. The leaders had rage on their face and fire in their eyes. It was shocking to see how much hatred they were passing on to the young girls. The parents in my troop told me that their girls, who were girl scouts (not at this event) were being taught a radical feminist agenda in their troops, and that they had taken their girls out of the organization. This was 20 years ago; I’m sure it is much worse, now.

Had more than a few obvious (yes they really were) lesbians in our seating area make downright rude comments. “Can‘t wait till you’re a little older” was one printable ones. Even asked the girls to come sit with them.

      Anyone who doesn‘t believe grooming and recruitment doesn’t go on is fooling themselves.

It is a shame that parents are ‘pulling their children out,’ instead of taking a leadership roll to return the Girl Scouts to their original nature based agenda.     A month from now nobody will remember this story or even care.

    As the year ends and the 2011 top 10 _____ lists get written, this will be a non-story. It wouldn’t even make a top 100 list. It’s unfortunate that this whole issue will be swept under the rug and nothing will change.

    Hopefully TheBlaze will follow this story and in six months or a year will post a follow up article stating that this pile of dust is still under the rug, or it has been thoroughly cleaned and sanitized.

    I was a leader for my daughters troop for the last 8 years. I know how bad it is getting. They are shoving these new Journeys down our throats and telling us that they are discontinuing the old badge books. The leaders in my area complained nonstop, but they wouldn’t listen. We all have left the Girl Scouts. The new books do not teach what Juliet Gordon Lowe founded the Girl Scouts on.

      It is a shame that parents are ‘pulling their children out,’ instead of taking a leadership roll to return the Girl Scouts to their original nature based agenda. Taking this tack will insure that only liberal-based organizations remain available for our American youth. That is a shame.

      I suggest that you look into BSA Explorer scouting. It is co-ed and available in a large number of interests including marksmanship, electronics, cooking, etc.

      I stopped buying the cookies several years ago when I learned about links to Planned Parenthood. I have a feeling that more and more parents will be reluctant to have their daughters ( or sons who want to be girls) join the Girl Scouts.

The Girl Scouts like the Boy Scouts, were created to instill American values in our youth like good citizenship, a sense of service to the community and self reliance by learning skills.     Not so sure it isn’t there already, I’m a certified leader and about 15 years ago I was thinking of becoming active again until I looked at the “ new ” merit badges and found that one covered “ being a woman” including birth control i. e. abortion. Needless to say I’m going to stay non-involved.

      So-called public schools (they’re actually government schools) are the central element of a statist system.

      In the 1850s and ’60s, the Reverend Dabney warned Protestants that, just as they were using the government-run, tax-funded (grtf, aka welfare) schools to make “good little USmericans” out of Catholic (and later, “Mormon”) children, one day, atheists would use them to make good little USmericans out of Protestants.

      Actually Gonzo there are badges that you can earn by going to health centers. Some troops earn this badge by going to Planned Parenthood. There are many other badges that the girls can earn which seem to be very questionable. My daughter was pulled out last year and my other daughter, now 5, will not be in the GS. Here is another interesting link about their convention this past November. GS did not use to be so left leaning.
