15-Year-Old Computer Whiz Sends Pakistani Gov’t a List of 780,000 Porn Sites to Censor

Ghazi Muhammad Abdullah, a 15-year-old Pakistani computer whiz, may be the only computer aficionado who wants internet censorship. The high school-aged activist may also be affiliated with the Pakistan hacker group Zombie_KSA, which has gone so far as to hack the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority’s website, and the website of the Pakistani Supreme Court in an effort to urge the government to restrict access to websites offering “adult” content.
The government decided to listen and sent out letters to Pakistanis soliciting requests for bans:
If there is any specific website that you wish to bring into the knowledge of PTA, it is requested that PTA may be informed of the same accordingly for further necessary action at our end.
In response, Abdullah has decided to turn himself into a one-man anti-porn vigilante. The International Herald Tribune picks up the story from here:
In a bid to aid the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) in its ongoing efforts to block online porn in Pakistan, fifteen-year-old Ghazi Muhammad Abdullah has compiled and sent forward a list of 780,000 adult websites which he thinks should be blocked in Pakistan.[...]
Without revealing the specific selection process for the adult sites added to the list, Abdullah told ProPakistani that he was aided by his friends whose names he wished not to share.
In an ongoing clampdown on the internet, the judiciary and PTA have taken action against porn websites by blocking or banning access to over 13,000 sites in the country.
One can only wonder where he found the time or what his true motivations were. Was it simply the idealism of youth driving his mission forward or were religious aspects at play? The report does not indicate, but it could perhaps be a combination of both.

Posted on March 15, 2012 at 11:35amI would just like to have a search engine that we can give a rating to (like E or T) so that those sites that want to put a rating into their address, can do so and be the ones that come up when doing research or just browsing. I would not call that censorship. I call this commonsense for those of us that object to discovering nasty surprises when looking for items.

Posted on March 15, 2012 at 6:49pm@Kathleen,
Rather than that, just use blocking tools already available to you. Why not use openDNS which will automatically check websites and block them depending on content restrictions that YOU set. Plus its free. That, and learn to be smart when browsing the internet. I have been on the web for YEARS and have never accidently ran into porn on the internet.

Posted on March 15, 2012 at 9:17amGood for this kid. They should block them in the states here as well. “Adult” sites – that’s just another name for “raping women and children online” – that is exactly what they do. You’ll see a 6 year old girl being raped (you know other countries are really gross) and they even do this in our “lovely” country. This is not free speech – it is criminal. There is a huge difference. Have sex in your bedroom with a butt plug. Watch a video with adults being naked, at their own will, if you must… but keep it in your bedroom and not on the internet. Do you know how many children accidentally see porn on the internet? Everyone. That is gross. It shows girls what they can “aspire” to be in this world… and that’s not much. Get it all off the internet and keep it in your bedrooms only. They are teaching people how to murder people online. They teach the regular joe – a ****** – how to build a bomb, so easy that an elementary school child can do it. You don’t need to know that unless you are in the military. The internet should be regulated (to a certain degree – if it is illegal to do in the real world – then it should be illegal on the internet) that’s common sense. And no, you don’t just block every site on the planet on your computer – that’s insane. The laws let men get away with rape to women and children, and they allow it on the internet as well. and then you always see some dumb lady in politics condoning it so she can fit in with the men. Ug

Posted on March 15, 2012 at 10:08am@SizzlinSexyBecster: First off porn is a regulated industry and follows a set of guidelines much like brothels, that are in place to regulate the industry. These protect those working in the industry from exploitation and from doing anything they do not agree with. I have honestly in all my years never run across any “kiddie” porn on the net. I do know it is possible, but then again it has always been possible even before the net. Sure, I can see an argument supporting the .XXX extension on porn sites, but banning porn sites is about as effective as banning alcohol.
Report Post »Considering the internet has no owner and no laws, because of its “international” expanse, you could never institute a ban on anything unless you lived under a Global Government that was the overlord of all the countries. If you don’t like porn on the internet then you could move to Pakistan where they do ban it or you can choose to avoid it, use cautious browsing practices or download something like Net Nanny or The Web Blocker.

Posted on March 15, 2012 at 8:01amAll in all I have no problem removing porn from the net, with that said I do have a problem with censorship. Just like gun control, they stick one foot in the door and soon they are pushing there whole body in and people are left looking at each other and pointing fingers to see who let them do this.

Report Post »I am not asking for a ban on porn but a way for my computer to filter it out. The stories of lives destroyed by porn are heartbreaking and many. Yes, it is a measure of self control but my measure of self control when I turn on a filter on my computer.
I have advocated that all porn sites MUST have an extension of .XXX instead of .com or so on. This would greatly simplify the filtering process. For those websites that do not use this approach, they would be subject of contributing to the delinquency of a minor just as if they sold it from in store. For those who don’t have the personal strength to avoid this trap and are of the legal age, they can indulge their lusts.
Porn is not victimless. Someone’s child, grandchild or sibling is being exploited. More often it is someones daughter, grand daughter or sister. Studies have proven repeatedly that an overwhelming percentage of the people involved in the “adult” industry were abused or molested in their childhood. There is also a strong tie between porn and other crimes on persons. It never has been or never will be victimless.

Posted on March 15, 2012 at 9:18amThe Liberal movement was usurped by Statists in the mid 1800′s to the extent that to imply that they now represent Liberty, is laughable. While defenders of Liberty, now called Libertarians, may find some common ground with modern day Conservatives economically, they probably will not socially. Understand that there are many Conservatives that will gladly give up certain individual liberties, and hand control of it to the government, if they believe it to be in keeping with the doctrine of their religion.
The Christian bible makes no Fascist demands upon the bible, as does the Koran. However, religious movements are commonly usurped by self-righteous Statists that wish to have governments forcibly judge the actions of their fellow man, based on what they believe their Creator’s ideals to be.
Such is the case now. Be wary of your fellow Conservative that would take the power of judgment away from individuals and God, and hand it over to the “leaders” of a Collectivist State. Be bold in your convictions and show them the error of their ways.
If you believe viewing porn be morally or ethically wrong, for whatever reason, deal with it yourself and with those that you care to try to convince of the errors of their ways. DON’T INVOLVE THE STATE! That NEVER ends well.

Why can’t we stop arguing over what to ban and realize banning stuff only creates more problems and destroys liberty – no matter what it is.

Porn is pure capitalism. It makes billions of dollars for the people who own the means of production and as little as they can get away with for the exploited workers, and it’s one of the few industries that still brings money into this country from the rest of the world.
