15-Year-Old Student Among 4 Americans Shot Dead in Mexico Attacks

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico (AP) — Four U.S. citizens were shot to death in separate attacks in the border city of Ciudad Juarez, Mexican authorities said Monday.

Chihuahua state prosecutors’ spokesman Arturo Sandoval said Edgar Lopez, 35, of El Paso, Texas, was killed Sunday along with two Mexican men when gunmen opened fire on a group standing outside a house.

On Saturday, a 26-year-old U.S. woman and an American boy were slain shortly after crossing an international bridge from El Paso. Giovanna Herrera and Luis Araiza, 15, were shot to death along with a Mexican man traveling with them just after 11 a.m., Sandoval said.

Sandoval said authorities also identified a 24-year-old woman killed Friday inside a tortilla shop as Lorena Izaguirre, a U.S. citizen and El Paso resident. A Mexican man was also found dead in the store.

Sandoval did not provide any information about possible motive in any of the slayings.

U.S. State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley confirmed three of the killings but did not have any information about Izaguirre. He said officials had been in touch with the victims’ families but offered no other details.

Ciudad Juarez has become one of the world’s deadliest cities amid a turf war between the Sinaloa and Juarez drug cartels. More than 2,000 people have been killed this year in the city, which is across the border from El Paso.

Also Monday, federal police said they arrested a U.S. man accused of being a member of the Aztecas gang, whose members work as hitmen for the Juarez cartel and operate on both sides of the border. Angel Martinez, 24, was arrested Saturday in Ciudad Juarez when he was traveling with another gang member, the department said.

Elsewhere, three city police officers were gunned down early Monday in a drive-by shooting as they patrolled the heart of Acapulco’s upscale tourist district, authorities said.

Another officer was wounded, according to a statement from the Public Safety Department in southern Guerrero state, where Acapulco is located.

The officers were patrolling the Puerto Marques area around 1 a.m. when they were ambushed by suspects shooting assault rifles from inside a car, police said.

Violence continues to escalate in the Pacific resort city, days after Mayor Jose Luis Avila Sanchez warned people to stay indoors after dark. Ten other people were killed between Sunday and Monday around the area. Authorities also were trying to determine whether a burned corpse found in a car was the body of a Canadian businessman who disappeared last week.

Meanwhile, the remains of seven people were found Sunday in a mass grave in Nogales, on the Arizona border. Mayor Jose Angel Hernandez said a family walking near the site noticed what appeared to be part of a body sticking up in a riverbed. Officers recovered six bodies and a severed head in the grave. A seventh headless body was found nearby.

In the border city of Tijuana, state police seized more than 14 tons (13 metric tons) of marijuana in two vehicles at a house in the same neighborhood where gunmen killed 13 people at a drug rehab center 10 days ago.

When you walk into a mine field with a crowd, expect a few mines to explode. Planning a vacation in Mexico? You must be dumber than a rock. I wouldn’t go there if I won an all expense vacation there. I’m far from being a coward, but I wouldn’t run through a mine field either. It’s called “using the brain that G-d gave you.” We need to secure our borders and we need to do it NOW!

It is not only along your southern border but from what I gather your government does not take it seriously. Nothing much happening on your northern border. Why are you not acting in the south?

You are right about our government not taking this thing seriously. Both the Bush and the Obama administrations have had their heads so far up their backsides on this issue because they either fear or covet the Hispanic vote. We need to got our borders secured NOW.

I realize that only the peaceful hard working Hispanics are crossing our borders to find the work that Americans wont do and that is why we don’t have huge Hispanic gang problems in many, many cities and not only in border towns. Not.

I know that our borders need to be secured and we need to take “illegal aliens” extremely serious but these people weren’t killed in America.

While I don’t like the death of U.S. citizens, these people knew the risks of going to Mexico. They need to just close the border crossings, and put more troops on the borders to stop the illegal crossings. But the only way to stop the illegal crossings is that we will have to get just a deadly as Mexico. Only then will they figure out that it won’t do them any good to come here.

Legalizing drugs will only bring the Cartels here to take back their profits. Besides then with everyone high on drugs the would not want to work. I am sure that you wouldn’t want a surgeon operating on you while he high on drugs. I am sure that you wouldn’t want a policemen/woman wanting to stop to get a snack before helping you after an accident. Because he/she has the munchies. Legalizing drugs will cause a lot more problems that it would solve. If you want to take the power from the Cartel’s then all you have to do is quit using pot.

Why couldn’t we get lucky enough to have them kidnap Obama and his family… take them back to Mexico, put them to work as slave labor in their rat-infested squalor… And THEN… shut down the border once and for all… they can’t come back, and we don’t go there. Unfortunately it looks like that‘s what we’re going to HAVE to do, if we want to keep our sovereignty and our citizens safe. I suppose it’s partly our fault for not kicking out the Progressives sooner. I predict the problem will never be resolved unless we militarize our southern border.
      .
We will NEVER have true immigration reform until the border is secure. And THAT’S the reason (IMHO) that the Progressives fight border control so viciously. What good is deportation if the deportee comes RIGHT BACK ACROSS?
      .
And now the Progressives are even bolder trying to gain power when they fight against simple common sense things like showing an ID to vote (ie. why they want non-citizens to vote in our elections)
      .
And the lame steam media ignore comment like this because…
      .

Secure the border, limiting the amount of drugs that flows north. When the cartels have no reason to control drug routes along the border, I’m guessing they will move elsewhere, perhaps even leave Mexico all together. I’m guessing cartels would end up moving into Central and South America to avoid starving to death in the useless Mexican economy.

Mexico bans the private ownership of firearms, leaving a nation of victims to the cartel murder lottery where on average one in every family is a winner. Citizens in Mexico have a choice: Hope they don’t become the latest statistic or arm themselves and take back their country since the government has lost control of their primary accountability to protect their citizens.
