150 Afghan Schoolgirls Poisoned in ‘Anti-Education’ Attack

Reports are surfacing that 150 Afghan schoolgirls have been poisoned in what is being deemed an “anti-education” attack.

“We are 100 percent sure that the water they drunk inside their classes was poisoned. This is either the work of those who are against girls’ education or irresponsible armed individuals,” Jan Mohammad Nabizada, a spokesman for the province’s education department, told Reuters.

Officials knew the attack was intentional because only the schoolgirls’ water was poisoned– the larger tank where they got the water remained uncontaminated.

“This is not a natural illness. It’s an intentional act to poison schoolgirls,” said the head of the province’s public health department.

Females in Afghanistan have been allowed to seek an education since the toppling of the Taliban in 2001, but they are still subject to periodic retribution from those who disagree with their choices, particularly in the more conservative regions of the country.

No group has yet stepped forward to claim responsibility for the attack, and officials have declined to name suspects, fearing potential retribution.

The Taliban, a prime suspect for many, said last year that it no longer opposes women’s education in an effort to adopt a more “moderate” face.

However, according to Reuters, the Taliban “has never stated [its opposition to women's education] explicitly, and in the past acid has been thrown in the faces of women and girls by hardline Islamists while walking to school.”

The fate of many of the girls remains to be seen.  Some are in critical condition, while others are expected to recover after treatment in the hospital.

    Where is the NOW (Natioanla Organization of Women) and why are they NOT chastising this action? Oh yeah, can’t leave the liberal/progressive plantation to actually talk about women’s rights that are not exclusive to contraception and abortion!!!

      I sometimes get disgusted myself over comments, however, I see nothing wrong with Cemerius’s comments. I see plenty wrong with other’s comments…but not this one. All women’s groups should be in an up roar over the whole middle east – but especially the Taliban. Any name calling in the world can not discribe the horror that is the Taliban.

      It’s funny to read people who post that those who are doing this sort of thing are inhuman and are behaving like wild animals. I wonder if you feel the same way about the white slave owners in the south during the first 100+ years of this country. Were they subhuman animals? There were similar intimidation practices used by the slave owners. Ya, they maybe didn’t use poison but any slave caught trying to learn to read or become educated in any form was beaten. The principle is the same. Knowledge is power and the wicked men behind this attack on these unfortunate young women and girls know this and fear it – just as slave owners feared an educated slave. If the two situations are different in your mind ask yourself why that is. Is it b/c one group was “Christian” and the other is from a religion you do not accept? If anything, those who professed to be Christian and committed such heinous acts should outrage you even more. And don’t for a minute try to say that it is different from what Muslims are doing b/c they do it in the name of their God and religion b/c there were plenty of Christian preachers and literature being written saying that it was morally fine to have a slave and treat them as you had to in the south as well.

      No, it was not ok for us to have slaves. Yes, they were subhuman. Thank God Almighty that dark period in our history is over and we grew as humans. Let’s pray that God helps the Islamists see that what they are doing to women and gays is abhorant and should not be tolerated in civil society. Let’s pray that they grow as humans before one more woman/gay is brutally murdered. Let’s also pray that we convince them there is no such thing as a Witch so they will stop hunting down and killing people under the guise of Sorcery/witchcraft.

      The Jews and Christians “evolved” if you will, over time. I certainly wish the Islamists would “evolve” as well. Although I must admit, I am a bit baffled as to why they did not, “evolve” as humans at the same time as the Christians and the Jews. That is perplexing to me.

      These poor little girls are nothing more than pawns, no matter their suffering. This is not a religion, this is Godliness denied. I am sick for their suffering in the name of dis-Godliness. While I have been a disbeliever in Islam, I am beginning to hate them, and their hatefull ways of hurting the innocent. These pople have no soul and deserve whatever Saten has in store for them.       I remember seeing a video of a woman being taken into the middle of a soccer field to be executed by the Taliban. While I forget her “crime” you could see her obviously pleading with the sub-humans getting ready to murder her.
      Also remember the girls the Taliban forced back into their burning schoolhouse because they weren’t covered properly.
