Taliban Claims Responsibility for Attack Killing 2 Americans Inside Afghan Foreign Ministry

The Taliban has claimed responsibility for a shooting that killed two U.S. advisers in the Afghan interior ministry Saturday, saying the attack was in retaliation for the burning of Korans on a U.S. base.

NATO confirmed two service members were killed by “an individual” who turned his weapon on them. Afghan officials confirmed the two dead were Americans. According to Reuters, they were believed to be a U.S. colonel and major.

“There was a shooting inside the command and control center of the interior ministry and two Americans have been killed,” a government source told Agence France Presse.

According to CNN, an Afghan official said the two officers were found dead in their office with gunshot wounds to the head.

Gen. John Allen, commander of NATO and U.S. forces, recalled all NATO personnel from Afghan ministries for safety reasons in response.

“I condemn today’s attack at the Afghan Ministry of Interior that killed two of our coalition officers, and my thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of the brave individuals lost today,” Allen said. “The perpetrator of this attack is a coward whose actions will not go unanswered.”

U.S. officials said the assailant remained at large and a manhunt was under way.

“The attacker is still alive and resisting and a second Mujahid managed to escape the ministry,” Taliban Zabiullah Mujahid said in an email, according to CNN. “This comes amid our call to all Afghan security forces to turn their guns towards the invading forces who are the real enemies of our country and religion and kill them so they leave our country.”

The shooting comes on the fifth day of protests and riots across the nation. At least 28 people have been killed and hundreds wounded since Tuesday, when it first emerged that Qurans and other religious materials had been thrown into a fire pit used to burn garbage at Bagram Air Field, a large U.S. base north of Kabul.

    We can still fight them with special ops.

We get into these Wars and say we are there to help, our soldiers for the most part by into the reasons they are there and give it their best only to be gunned downed by some wild eyed rabid dogs over a damn false book of the occult. Its time to move on from this region however painful…we’ve done all we can do for the nice peoples there, but we cannot be killed while working along side those whom we are trying to protect.

      good idea to leave afghanistan…we cannot defeat these people…we “must” play by the rules, and they have none, which i do not understand in the least. in war..no rules..
      i think it is all planned. when our soldiers killed ben laden…we left equipment behind. i do not believe the seals would do this…so what happened there?…left it long enough for pakistan to share with china..it’s all a big conspiracy..
      what ever we do over there should be covert..i think we should just spread an untraceable gas during the night, and kill everyone there…oooohhhh the innocent victims?…there would be none, no innocent ones that is.

      The Afgans in the picture and the ones in video does not strike my as Taliban members. They look like the Afgan citizens. This war is a debacle, it is sponsored and maintained by the military industrial complex and the big banks. We have used depleted uranium artillery on the people, birth defect are up 400% in areas from these shells and the general population has high levels radiation, not to mention our troops being exposed to it also. We did the same in Iraq, thus gulf war syndrome.
      We are being lied to about the dangers and we failed in Iraq as the leadership is faltering. The Afgan

      Well if they were in America protesting like that then I’d be willing to call them savages as well but in their own country protesting the desecration of their Holy Book by foreign occupiers?? I’d probably tend to call them Patriots.

      What would Americans do if someone occupied our Nation and began burning Bibles? Unfortunately probably nothing but nothing is sacred to most Americans any longer. Bottom line is we have no business in their country. None. We had no business in Iraq or Libya and we sure as hell don’t have any business in Iran.

Need to be more like Eisenhower, who warned about this, the military industrial complex — worried that after he left, there would be Pres. that didn’t have the wisdom to know when to tell the Commanders, “NO”.     Good Lord, I hope this doesn’t end the way it did in Vietnam….with us evacuating as quickly as possible. However, from what I am reading this protest isn’t getting smaller, its getting bigger. Someone is fanning the flames.

    The really sad part is I believe the Bible is the infallible word of God, and if someone burns the Bible, I will feel sorry for the person who did it, but I will go get another Bible, not kill people who had nothing to do with burning it.

      This won’t end like the Nam. There are no carriers off shore waiting for the evac Hueys. Our troops are surrounded by enemies with the only way out is by air. At the end, there will be only a handful to act as rearguard. It won’t end well. Alexander the Great, the British (twice), and the Russians couldn’t defeat the Afghans. It looks like we are next.

      I know this sounds defeatist. I happen to be a veteran who believes we should have gone into Afghanistan only for the length of time needed to kill bin Laden. I don’t care about nation building. I don’t care about Afghan or Iraqi freedom. I only care about retribution. As far as I am concerned, we should have pulled out the day bin Laden was killed. My son served 2 tours of duty in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. The Army is his career. I pray that he is not in the rearguard.

      I completely agree. This is Vietnam 1971 all over again. I was 18 and in the lottery. My high school friends were coming back home damaged and everyone of them told me to do what ever I had to do not to go over there. The war was over and guys were getting hurt for nothing. They said many times they just refused to go on night patrol because it was senseless and rediculus at that point to risk getting somebody killed. I appreciate anyone who served over there and feel very sorry for anyone who got hurt or lost a family member during the “war”. I was lucky enough to get a high draft number twice. I have great respect for the military and have been encoaraging my son to join the Navy after college. I just do not want to see anybody else get hurt. It was mistake to think we could Westernize these people. It will never happen. Ron Paul is our best option IMO. Not perfect but best.
