2010: Fox News Dominates Cable News — Tops All Competitors Combined

This year’s race for cable news ratings had a clear front-runner, according to newly released Nielsen numbers. Not surprisingly, Fox News Channel came out on top, continuing its ratings dominance over its cable news competition. According to Business Insider, Fox News clocked its second-highest ratings year ever in 2010:

It was also the only news channel to hit the top 10 in cable networks, ranking fourth in Primetime behind USA, ESPN and TNT.

Want some context for that? Fox News’ total viewers for the year exceeded MSNBC, HLN, and CNN combined.

That dominance came primarily at the expense of CNN which lost 29% of its total viewership in 2010 and 34% of its prime time viewers. Yes, you read that right.

MSNBC, meanwhile stayed the course in total day total viewers – it was the only news channel not to drop in that category — but dropped 5% year over year in prime time total viewers and 9% in the prime time demo.

Oh, the how the sheep bray! It’s amusing listening to the short bussers rave about how Fox is “Da twufe!” when they has been caught twisting the facts or flat out lying so many times that any intelligent person would have dumped them long ago.

No, if you want to even hope to know the truth, you go online and read multiple new sources; blogs, trade magazines, various news sites, etc. If you rely on any single station for your news, ESPECIALLY Fox, and consider yourself informed, you are kidding yourself.

      MALACHAI,
Give an example of what you are talking about instead of name calling. You are entitled to your own opinions, but without facts, it’s an empty cause with this crowd. Please give an example. I look at many examples of news, but always come back to FOX for news that is not reported anywhere else. Your comment of FOX ‘caught twisting the facts or flat out lying so many times’, will only stand if you can support your statement. Come on, I’ll come back for your many example you say you have.

The good news is perhaps the FCC, the executive branch of our government, and the progressives in Congress will be hesitant in attempting to pull their broadcast license. There have been plenty of them bemoaning how Fox distorts the news and is the cause of all of the clashes and dissent in our government. I still think that they were building up to do something drastic about Fox news and still think that they might.

You see, you dumb progressives, when you let the market work, the consumer goes to the source of best quality. Of course, that doesnt work for you. Lies are your life. And the FCC is going to have to come in. Its the only way the stupidity of progressivism can work (by cheating). You can sure try, but there are a few tricks up our sleeves as well. A false sense of securtity and arrogance will cause a long, hard fall.

I like FOX most of the time. They really need to let Beck; or Drudge; run their news gathering. This way we could avoid wasting air time watching empty balloons that might be carrying a kid named Falcon, Central Park Coyotes, and assorted freak shows. Overall; they do a pretty good job. I can never last more than 3 minutes watching CNN. The ratings seem to support my position. I do love consensus.

With Net Neutrality looming, it may only be a matter of time before we completely lose our first amendment right to free speech. You sir, are not too intelligent ..

Do you actually think MSNBC/CNN are FAIR AND BALANCED? Fox might not exactly be sitting right int he center but at least they give conservatives AND liberals a voice! Look at their 2010 election coverage. As MSNBC aired FOUR socialist pundits to cover NEWS .. Fox put two moderate analysts on the air. The whole night, they had three democrats and three conservatives covering their views on the matter. If that’s not balanced, I don’t know what is!

The fact is MSNBC and CNN (MS espcially) are far left news outlets. FOX actually covers both sides. While they do lean right, the real truth is they aren’t really taking a far right stance. That’s just bullcrap that the other (less successful) outlets are spewing so they can try to make mainstream America look NOT SO mainstream …

October 2009: “Fox News senior vice president Michael Clemente, who likens the channel to a newspaper with separate sections on straight news and commentary, suggested White House officials were intentionally conflating opinion show hosts like Glenn Beck with news reporters like Major Garrett…”
Yes, I know Garrett is gone…remember? I watch… but get it? “OPINION SHOW HOSTS LIKE GLENN BECK…” The Sr. VP of Fox gives you CREDIT to know opinion from news! Do you?

What’s your point? Fox has opinion shows .. mixed with straight news? Yeah, all cable networks do that … the only difference is people want to WATCH Fox News .. whether it’s straight news .. or opinion! Yes, I know the difference between opinion and straight news BTW. Straight news is RAW. Opinion gives you different points of view so you can gather data points. I would imagine most people who watch FOX realize this fact.

Glenn Beck even says he is just stating his opinion .. and tells folks to gather their own information so they come to their own conclusions. Obviously, you‘ve never watched more than one episode of Beck’s show .. and maybe a few hours of Fox News in your entire adult life.

There’s NOBODY on Fox giving a good “other side.” Powers and Williams very inconsistent and not strong, Beckel, Schoen, Cadell not even in the ballpark of having adequate info. And liberal/dem talking points are often shut-/shot-down before they can catch wind. There is NO progressive point of view AT ALL with the exception of an occasional short segment. Anybody who’s ONLY watching Fox is getting one side, and my impression is that many DON’T WANT to see both side, because SO MUCH time is spent de-legitimizing/vilifying the “other side.”

I don‘t think that’s accurate. I think the main reason you say this is because you simply don’t watch enough to know better. I see plenty of liberals on FOX who get a chance to state their arguments. They might be criticized however they do state their case. How is this any different on MSNBC or CNN? Conservatives are mocked and ridiculed on those networks versus simply (sometimes) being merely dismissed on FOX (after making their case) .. but to say FOX is more biased than those networks is an outright lie. Those guys would have you believe that lie, though .. among others …

The fact is the only reason MORE STRONG liberals aren’t ON fox is because they would be dismissed by their colleagues due to them “SELLING OUT” .. because as we all know .. FOX and conservative people are stupid and evil! If more liberals were willing to sign on with FOX .. and appear on FOX .. they would have a bigger VOICE on FOX. Plain and simple. They are afraid of being beaten. That’s the bottom line.

I watch often enough. Likely more than you watch other stations. Most of the supposed liberals clearly have inadequate information. They concede points that no self-respecting and knowledgeable liberal would have to. A GREAT example was the “debate” yesterday on the Dana-going-Greta show. When the host/hostess has a skewed viewpoint it ends up being a non-debate, more of a cremation :)

Meant Dana-doing-Greta. JSH, would you disagree that there are many who watch Fox because they want just THEIR ideology validated? Not for the purpose of getting a truly balanced debate. I’m open to hearing/seeing an example of a good solid debate that I missed on Fox.

Listen, even if you are RIGHT (you’re not .. I’ve seen plenty of fiery but logical and informative debates on FN) would you not agree that people watch CNN, MSNBC etc and listen to stations like NPR, read HUFFPO, Washington Post, NY Times, etc etc etc only because they want their opinion validated? The fact is there are FAR more mainstream media outlets which cover pretty much ONLY the far-left side of the news. FOX is the ONLY place a conservative can go to get news that better fits the views of mainstream America. MSNBC and CNN simply don’t fit the bill. America is a moderate-right nation .. and FN is a moderate-right news source.

IF you think FOX is far-right, you are probably way too far left and simply don’t realize what the majority of Americans actually stand for and believe in. There’s a reason THIS many people are watching FOX. It‘s because most Americans don’t want to watch networks with hosts who are SELF PROCLAIMED socialists and/or cheesy, watered down, politically correct punditry which you get on CNN/MSNBC when a far-leftist is NOT in front of the camera.

I realize that to go on and on is pointless. But no, I don’t agree with almost any of your points. (no need for attacks or condescension) Your description of the media sources- not true, although you’re told that over and over (as I’ve heard/seen.) I’ll grant you that a conservative has found his home at Fox. Contrary to what you write, when a dem makes a strong stand on Fox, he’s cheered, not shunned, by the left. The names I named above don’t carry that water.
