The famous Marine drill instructor who created a stir last week when he said President Obama was trying to implement socialism has released a statement apologizing for those remarks.
R. Lee Ermey said today that his comments were “misguided” and “emotionally based” and for that he is “truly sorry.” His full statement, which is posted on his website as a splash page, is below:
A Message from the Gunny
“I recently appeared at a fundraising event designed to collect toys and raise awareness for underprivileged children. While that event succeeded in raising thousands of dollars and hundreds of toys for this cause, I regret that I delivered a monologue that was inappropriately critical of the President. I was trying to be entertaining and simply went too far in this instance. I am mindful that my success as an entertainer relates in part to my experience in the Marine Corps, my devotion to its members, and the deep respect I have for members of all our Armed Forces. My comments should not be seen as reflecting on them or their views. I was just very disappointed in the amount of success that we were having raising toys and money for the underprivileged children this season. The poor economy has greatly hampered our efforts. My comments were misguided, and emotionally based, and for that I am truly sorry.”

Mediaite wonders if the apology is a move to appease the insurance company GEICO. As many know, Ermey has had a resurgence as a GEICO commercial star. But recently, another GEICO voice actor was fired for a foray into political talk:
A few months ago, GEICO fired voice actor Lance Baxter AKA D.C. Douglas for being critical of the Tea Party and Freedomworks. Not only did they fire him, they fired him for a political outburst on his own free time.
Will they now fire Ermey?
That could be the reason. But some may just wonder if this is Ermey crossing into “mamby pamby land”:

Jan. 4, 2011 at 2:26pmHe apologizes for actually speaking his views and beliefs? Not a crime that I’m aware of and we still have freedom of speech.
This President and his administration wants to be socialist, implement socialist politics and standards ( if one could actually call it standards, more lack of) they want to be somewhere between socialist and communist and stop just short of communism.but why don’t they just grow some testicles and stand up and admit what they are if they love it so much? Why be so sneaky and lie about everything? I thought you were/ are proud of what you are and what you do? Doesn’t much sound like it. Stop hiding, take your hoods off, and put your pants on and come on out. WE want to play.
If it walks like a duck, acts like a duck, it is probably a damn duck.

Jan. 4, 2011 at 2:21pmSGT. Ermey’s apology will upset more people than the truth he spoke about our failed “president”. There are times when we must speak the truth and simply not worry about who we offend – SPEAK OUT America – NEVER Apologize for speaking the truth. Semper Fi

Jan. 4, 2011 at 2:20pmUnfortunately you have to do things when you work for the socialist media. More than likely he was told to so to preserve his jobs. When most of the media is leftist and socialists then even though you might disagree with them, you have to keep it to yourself.
While I wholeheartedly agree with the Drill Sargent, I can also understand that he has to do what he has to do to survive. At his age I would imagine that he doesn’t have many choices to choose from. The current administration can put a lot of pressure on companies to get rid of people that disagree with them.

Jan. 4, 2011 at 2:18pmWhat he said was true in every respect, however, I can see where GEICO might have some concerns about what he said, as he is a very visible representative of that company. I wrote GEICO who has insurance on two homes that I own and two vehicles and has been my insurance carrier for almost 50 years requesting that they take on action against him and stating that I might have to rethink GEICO being my insurance carrier.

Jan. 4, 2011 at 2:16pmAll I can say is I still respect R. Lee Ermey! While I agree with his initial comments, I do think they were out of line given the forum for his speaking engagement to begin with. He was there, as an entertainer and former Marine, to promote the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program and his words could very well have been detrimental to that cause. Note – he didn’t apologize for the comments, but rather for issuing those comments given that forum. Everyone here knows he said exactly what he meant – so don’t let his apology spoil your appreciation for him or his patriotism.

Jan. 4, 2011 at 2:15pmI think too many are too hard on Gunny. He is being held as a spokesman for the Corps at this point because of his celebrity status and he didnt apologize for the sentiment but for the forum in which he expressed that sentiment.

Jan. 4, 2011 at 2:14pmDid John Murtha who was a supposed Marine ever apologize for calling Marines cold blooded killers? Even If it meant losing any future work in Hollywood or History Channel I would tell the left to kiss my a$$ and try to live on what I’ve already earned and keep my honor intact.

Jan. 4, 2011 at 2:13pmSay it isn’t so! While it may not have been the correct forum for the statement, it was legitimate. I can accept apologizing for when and where the statement was made, but not for the statement itself. Come on Sarge, you’ve got more guts than that!!!!! Never surrender!!!!

Jan. 4, 2011 at 2:12pmI just knew he, of all people, was not going to backtrack on what he said. As a former Marine, I am disappointed. I disobeyed a direct order once becuase it was putting my life in danger. My Staff Sargent brought me to Captains Mast and I was found guilty but the truth came out and he was forced to retire early. I took my lumps but STOOD MY GROUND!

Jan. 4, 2011 at 2:11pmHe was probably bullied into apologizing by Geico. If this is proven to be true, we should call for a boycott of Geico. I am disappointed in the Gunny, I thought he would be about the last person to buckle under pressure. I wonder what my 15 yo son is going to think, he wants a career in the Marines in part because of Ermey`s past show Mail Call

Jan. 4, 2011 at 2:06pmThought I would try to explain why this is the smart thing to do. As we know, “Once a Marine Allways a Marine” NO Marine would ever publicly be disrespectfull to the President. They respect the Office period. This Marine knows his comments would be interpited as being an opinion of Marines currently serving in war and those all around the Country.
He has always been a staunch supporter of the Marines and On a side not he does do very good Ads for Geico lol. Also I would not drop the company because as a Marine he did what he had to do.” He improvised, adapted and Overcame a possible misuse of a comment that the majority of the left would have used to discredit Marines which they could careless about in my opinion. If you are attacking this guy, think about this. You are guilty of falling into the left’s typical trap of blame the single messenger and you can blame them all. Smarten Up “hoo Rah” Semper Fi remeber what it means please.

Jan. 4, 2011 at 2:23pmNot in the eyes of everyone. Once a Marine, that took an oath, that is above all men including “the president” that does not live up to their oath is a pansy. And it is becoming more clear every day that people in this country has made a mockery out of the oath, they all sell out to political correctness and are more concerned with their self than the Constitution. If there were anyone within all of the military’s and all of the government, meant what they pledged, there would not be a bunch of commies residing in the White House right now.

Jan. 4, 2011 at 3:45pmTotally disagree—-as a former Marine, I understand the code, but Ermey is a private citizen now and has a duty to use his pulpit to speak the truth. The reality is sometimes you have to be willing to stand up for what is right, even if it brings pressure on you.
The reason our country is screwed is because people will no longer stand up to the politcially correct socialists, anti-free speach America haters that want to tell us how to live our lives. While I understand your “strict” compliance with Marine Corps standards, the reality is Ermey is a private citizen now, and he has every right to speak his mind. The fact that he backed down tells more about his character than anything else ever could.

Jan. 4, 2011 at 3:28pmC.C.D., you are a patriot for cancelling your Geico policy, and if for any reason you have doubts, no that this issue with Ermey is NOTHING—-this company is majority owned by Warren Buffet, a socialist elitist one step down from George Soros. Buffet made his riches screwing Americans by sending jobs overseas, now he wants to slam the door shut on anyone else having opportunity by creating a socialist form of government.
Warren Buffet, like his lieutenants at Geico Insurance and many of these other large corporations like Progressive Insurance are the reason this country is screwed. The reality is if you study the markets, you will really understand how the elitist anti-American socialist progressives took over this country. The collapse of 2008 was well planned an conceived—-the events had been in the making for many, many years, and Warren Buffet and his socialist companies along were a big part of it.
ANYBODY who is willing to do ANY research at all (outside of the CNBC cheerleading) will find that Warren Buffet, and by extension, Geico, are evil anti-American socialist companies.
Cancel your insurance and tell your friends about Geico. If you don’t believe it, research Warren Buffet more—REALLY RESEARCH HIM—and you will find he is an evil socialist just like Soros, only he is a little more careful not to let the mainstream idiots realize it.
