MSNBC’s Matthews Calls Bachmann ‘Balloon Head’ During On-Air Rant

I’m sure Tea Party Express co-founder Sal Russo didn’t expect his visit to Hardball to be dull. Sure wasn’t. It quickly turned into a Chris Matthews rantfest about Michele Bachmann. ‘Balloon head’ became the term of the night.

Mediaite’s Matt Schneider:

The “interview” ended up being just Matthews berating Russo with questions like “do you know how little this woman knows about American history” and “what is she talking about?” Joan Walsh was also a guest for the segment, but there was a little time for her, since it was clearly much more entertaining watching Matthews scream at Russo “are you hypnotized – can you answer a question,” whenever Russo struggled to defend Bachmann.

William & Mary only offers a FEW tax law classes and they do not offer a Degree in Tax Law.

So, either Michele Bachmann is NOT an American Citizen and went to William & Mary and got an LL.M because she was Foreign Student.

Then he says African American Slaves. DA, 3/5ths applies to ALL SLAVES. Slaves where not just africans, EVERY RACE WAS A SLAVE. And if your status was “slave”, you were considered 3/5ths of a person.

CM even said the founders made compromise after compromise to keep from going to war. Trying to fight against slavery, while trying not to go to war. He said it himself, they tried to take care of it till the civil war when there was nothing else to do but fight. So in his circular logic (if you want to call it logic) he made Michelle’s point that the founders (eventually Republicans) worked ever which way to abolish slavery peacefully and up until the south (Democrats) seceded to keep their slaves and their “equal justice” (for their slaves) was there a fight.

      Posted on January 26, 2011 at 5:14pm

The 3/5ths had nothing to do with how much of a person a slave was. It was strictly a counting method to determine how much representation slave owning states were due. Pro-slavery states wanted to count them 100% not because they cared for slaves but because they cared about having extra representation at the federal level. It had to do with nothing more than the census count determining representation. So James Madison suggested a compromise of 3/5ths count. And it had nothing to do with blacks either, since free blacks were counted 100%.

CatB, you said it. A total lack of class, too. Funny, I thought compromise to avoid war was a good thing. Everyone knows the 3/5 clause was nothing more than a political means to an end to rid the nation of slavery, and it worked. Yes, Mathews, slavery was ended by a Republican president, being opposed by the Democratic-Republicans, who later became the Democratic Party.

What BS the 3/5 clause was to keep power out of the hands of the slave states. The south wanted to count slaves in the census to give them a larger representation in congress, but didn’t want to give them the rights provided by the constitution. that was the concession that was made to keep the union together. and if they didn’t do it slavery would probably still be legal. BTW the republican party was founded as the anti slave party.

what a grand standing idiot. the 3/5 provision was an ANTI SLAVERY provision, meant to reduce the number of representatives pro slavery states would have in congress, it was meant only for counting purposes having nothing to do with how a slave should be treated. Pro slavery factions WANTED slaves to be counted 100% and not 60% (3/5) so they could “represent” them. Mathews should learn some non progressive “history” and look in the mirror to see the real balloon head.

She is actually quite right. Slavery was accepted by most at our founding. But slowly the founders and the country began to shift their attitude. It was indeed John Quincy Adams who introduced legislation to abolish slavery in 1839. The country still wasn’t quite ready. The Emancipation Proclamation did not cover the 800,000 slaves in the slave-holding border states of Missouri, Kentucky, West Virginia, Maryland or Delaware, which were Union states. For instance, Lincoln allowed Maryland to keep slavery in order to get them to remain on the North’s side. Slavery was not a faucet that was turned off by Lincoln. It required the evolution in thinking of the majority of citizens before the laws could be enacted. I think it’s Matthews who doesn’t have a clue.

Chris Mathews should educate himself before spewing his warped, racist view of history on TV.
The first slave owner in America was a black man who owned a black slave.
Some slaves were white, some Native Americans.
3/5ths applied to slaves of all races, and was designed to deny southern slave-holding states the power to enshrine slavery in America permanently.
The Republican party was formed to combat slavery, and championed the ideas of equality while the Democrats fought to keep them down.
He would do well to follow Glenn Beck’s example and provide some facts to support his racist ranting.

FIREFIGHT……. is exactly right. People have distorted and used the actual history of slavery in this country to further their own agendas. Most of the time this has meant twisting the facts into a perverted version of the reality. The republican party was the anti-slavery party and if you ask me still is…..Democrats love their entitlements because it keeps generation after generation of people dependent on them staying in power to get increases in benefits. Their handouts are still slavery just a different form. They don’t care about the poor if they did they would actually help them up out of their pit, but that wouldn’t serve their best interests as all. That’s why they go after any black person who falls down on the conservative side with a vengeance. Clarence Thomas is a perfect example. A black man making something of himself and becoming distinguished and independent will just not fit into the democrat worldview. Now Before someone points out Barry O, just think a minute, he is more than welcome in the club because he is a big wealth redistribution guy. Perfect if your a democrat. The more people dependent on your handouts the more likely you stay in power. And that my friends IS slavery.

I am a libertarian/conservative, I have a problem #1) I like Sarah but will not vote for her for any position above mayor. She was hired by the good folks of Alaska and she quit, just flat out quit. In all the interviews, speeches etc., I have been unimpressed by the lack of specifics and overly simplistic solutions. #2)Bachmann is the worst type of person, she has lots of opinions but no idea why or what she’s talking about. Are these people moles put in place to destroy our movement? The #1 problem is the debt and so far NO ONE on my side has said a thing I consider more than a sound bite.

Why do people on the right go on this guys show? He asks a question then doesn’t give him a chance to answer. Constantly belittles the person on the right and cutting him off but gives the woman that leans left all the time she desires. Then Chris comes back to the man that leads right and does the same thing again eventho he says he will give him all the time he needs on two different occaisions.

How is him calling her a balloon head any worse than Rush or Glenn calling Obama a racist or a communist? The hypocrisy is blinding.
