Unruly Scene on House Floor: Steny Hoyer Booed, Eric Cantor Interrupted by Chants

More government shut down drama–and mudslinging!

The New York Times:

Passions were running high in the House on Thursday morning as a federal government shutdown loomed and members of Congress began to get queasy about the prospect of being blamed for the ensuing disruptions.

As Republican and Democratic leaders traded barbs, lawmakers loudly jeered and cheered their respective leaders, giving the House a little of the atmosphere of the British Parliament.

Representative Steny H. Hoyer of Maryland, the chamber’s second-ranking Democrat, drew loud hoots when he implied that House Republicans were Tea Party lackeys. He also noted that Democrats, when they controlled the House, negotiated with President George W. Bush rather than close the government when they disagreed over the war in Iraq.

“We never shut down the government when we were in the majority and President Bush had power,†Mr. Hoyer said. “There is a rational way for us to proceed, and very frankly when we were in your shoes we did so when we couldn’t reach agreement with President Bush.â€

Maybe if the Dems had done they’re job and passed a budget in October this wouldn’t be happening.

By the way isn’t the President in charge of starting the Budget process? The only reason they didn’t do it, was because the President and the Democrats didn’t want to be arguing budget during the election. They knew they would loose in a much greater degree!

Why aren’t they telling the truth? These aren’t even spending cuts when the budget has been inflated as much as 140% in some areas. This is Bull &*% ….31 Billion? that’s like me telling my family we cant have Electricity for 15 hrs at some point during this year because we are on a budget!

Obama has taken a 2 trillion dollar budget from 2008 & increased it to 3.5 last in 09′ & 3.7 trillion this year.

1.5 trillion over budget, 1500 billion dollars. & they cant agree to 60 billion.

    Less than 1%.

America, I should say the producers in America need to embrace Rep Ryans budget, getting back to 08 numbers & cutting 6 trillion to start with from there.

We have a good man runing HERMAN CAIN that is a very capable and honest American and has proven that he has what it takes to be a leader. He also has more experience in the buisness world than a lot of the people thats running and Mr Cain has something that i havent seen in any of the other Canidate and something that will be a huge asset for the Prsident and that is just plain everyday COMMON SENSE.Common sense is a valuable asset for anyone to have.

They didn’t want to pass a budget because the November mid term elections were around the corner. They were afraid of passing a budget and paying the consequences of it at the ballot box…not that it did them any good. They should have taken responsibility to fulfill their duties, but as usual, the Democrats tried to escape blame.

Nah, Sleazy’s right… as soon as the impasse is over, they BACK PAY everybody who had a vacation during the shutdown. Now if it would STAY shut down, except for essential services, (and we, the people had a chance to decide what was essential), THEN you’d save billions. As in: no teach then no pay… but don’t bother with paying the NEA or the NFT.

Michael, because there are so many “essential agencies” — If they shut down the Government for 32 weeks, it would break even, to get Billions you need to shut down non essential things for years. The biggest savings would come from shutting down the active duty Military, the Border Patrol, and all of the newly hired DHS (like the TSA) – which will never happen!

Frank – right now the managers of Government offices are not working on their mission, they are planning how to manage a shutdown. This is a HUGE waste of time. If they do shut down, their “pre-paid” Contractors begin charging OT to keep the wheels rolling. FRurloughed people need to keep staying in touch, so they get 4-6 hours a week for not working. When the shut down ends, there is a Start-Up[ phase and a Impact phase – which is wasteful. Last time, when the shutdown ended, all employees got retroactive Pay – plus Interest. It goes On and ON.

Why do any of you respond to encinom? This deluded nattering nabob is absolutely without a clue as to how the real world works, forget about economics and government. His/her little barbs and pokes are offered only to elicit a guttural response from you. When you respond he or she achieves a perverted release. To date in this forum, I have not read one insightful deduction, or original thought, that was contributed by encinom. This insipid dullard regurgitates Media Matters talking points and would be easily bested by a dung beetle in a debate about government policies.

This is not a Republican issue, nor a Tea party Issue,,,,
This is the DECMOCRATS, not wanting to take responsibility, for a job that was THEIRS to do, under the constitution, in 2010. Democrats controlled the House, Democrats Controlled the Senate, Democrats controlled the Presidency. It was a SLAM DUNK to pass the budget, except, they do not want to be blamed for whats in it, and how much more in debt it puts us. Which brings up the legitimate question of WHATS IN IT? Its like the Healthcare bill, sign it now, do not read it till after its signed,,,, Its simple a means to put the blame onto the Republicans and the Teapartiers. We are now, 6 months, 7 days, past the time of when a budget was supposed to have been passed.

The Dems deliberately did not pass a budget when they controlled both houses.
Their game was to put the Repub’s in a situation where they would be blamed and the Dems could get re-elected. Come on, its soooo obvious. They’re banking on a replay of the 90′s.

House Republicans should hold a vote of “No Confidence” for comrade obama and follow it up with the initialization of impeachment proceedings specifically citing the fact that, under his leadership, with the majority in both houses as well as the oval office, his democrats FAILED to produce this budget last year when it was due. This situation and probable government shutdown is a direct reflection on his gross mismanagement/misfeasance and indifference.

@encinom, compromise, man that is calling the kettle black, coming from you, that will intimidate the supporters of a political party just because of their views, and from some one who will stand with communist, socialist ,and any one else that will the unions get what they want not what is fair, coming from someone who believes the other 90% of Americas work force should pay for your retirement, this from someone who says ” as i said to you the other day { i thought we were all in this together as one country } and your response was { your are not in it for anyone but yourself } wow, it don’t take long for the communist to change the unions attitude about the Americas freedoms. but hey, when we lose our freedoms, then we will be in it all together ,so it is either save freedom,or your own butt,i know where i stand, and it is not with communist.

@Sooty3250 – Very good post! Right at the heart of the issue.

@Showtime – you’re right and it’s a sad commentary of where we have declined to. IMHO Communists should not be allowed near children.

Bottom line is, we are hear because of a profound failure of leadership. Barry O is just not intellectually capable of doing the job of POTUS. Too bad we can’t impeach on grounds of extreme incompetence!

Barry O Dumbo Ears the spineless coward is the worst POTUS ever. Jimmy C is happy as can be now! A POTUS this incompetent only comes around once every 10,000 years. We’re watching real history being made ;-)

Why are they allowed to act like unruly children in Congress? If they act up or speak out of turn, they need a time-out. If they fail to do their jobs or threaten our form of government, they need to be expelled. Election Day 2012 will be a day of reckoning for alot of these bad boys and girls.

If the government does shut down, I hope when the Dim‘s start pointing fingers at the R’s, I hope the R‘s respond with the fact that the Dim’s didn’t do their job last year in passing a budget in the first place. If they had we wouldn’t be where we are now, and maybe a few less Dim’s around. Strike all that…just answered my own question…

AmericanStrega: “This whole government needs to be tossed into the nearest toilet and flushed.”

I disagree. THEY NEED TO BE HUNG … out to dry … in the light of day … off the Capitol Building eaves where all men may see and fear to become traitors like them. JUSTICE For TRAITORS is what is needed, not some ethereal Beck-do-nothing-non-justice-ism (“justice delayed is justice denied”). Sorry Glenn, you’re wrong on this one.

“We never shut down the government when we were in the majority and President Bush had power,†Mr. Hoyer said. “There is a rational way for us to proceed, and very frankly when we were in your shoes we did so when we couldn’t reach agreement with President Bush.â€

No kidding, as long as you (Democrats) could spend that wasn’t a problem. Now when people had enough, you just can’t stop yourselves.

Encinom speaks of compromise. What a load of crap. When you compromise with a liberal, democrat, progressive, socialist or whatever they want to call themselves, conservatism loses. When right and wrong compromise, right loses. When good and evil compromise, good loses. I think I am seeing a pattern here.

EncinoM, who are your leaders? Reid? Pelosi? Boxer? Feinstein? Government shut-down? Come on and use a little common sense. The Tea Party did not shut down anything. They are for lower taxes. If you want to pay for abortions, donate. If you want to pay for NPR donate. Stop blaming others for your lack of donations. Believe in the Constitution. I think the Republicans should have started at 10% reduction and keep looking for more. There is a lot of waste in that budget that the Democrats did not pass.
