‘Little Girl With a Dead Squirrel’: Is This ‘Bad Parenting’ or Just a Morbidly Cute Video?
This clip is screaming to be introduced by “America’s Funniest Home Video’s” Tom Bergeron or possibly Dr. Phil as he launches into a show on bad parenting. Either way, it’s a winner.
A young girl is outside playing and sees the family dog kill a squirrel. It doesn’t shock or even frighten the young lady. She wants to show this trophy to her parents, whose first instinct is to run and grab the video camera.

And as far as the parents being good, it almost seems to me like they were to high to care about any consequence that could harm their child from this probably parasitic infested wild rodent. Whether any of this is true or not I don’t know, but I could never vote for this couple being good parents, especially considering that most people when knowingly on camera that will circulate the internet tend to try to make their normal behavior a little more paletable for the public.

Actually it is saliva that can cause transmission of rabies and yes, that child has potentially been exposed to rabies. Just because it was the dog that “caught” the squirrel doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have rabies. Looking at a dead squirrel gives you no idea of whether or not there was a possible rabies contamination. The only way to determine that is to get a brain biopsy done. In addition to rabies, that little critter could also be harboring deer ticks (yep…they are on other things other than “deer”). These parents were really very stupid and the best thing they can do is to assume the squirrel actually DID have rabies since now no doubt they have destroyed any opportunity to have the squirrel tested.

And all the bigoted remarks throughout this site, the kid is clean and well fed, the parent looked clean, how could anyone know if they are good parents or not from a short video like this. It is an animal that died, not her mother. People and animals die all day long, it wasn’t tortured. God apparently set up a system where physical death is the end product of living, so blame god? Nice dog, didn’t even break the skin, perfect kill. If the mother was a crack ho and yelled at the little girl to put it down and lectured how bad it is to die and kill, then tell her about heaven with a glass pipe in her hand that would be better? Sometime it is better to let people be and look at what you are doing in your life, afraid to go outside for all the disease? Don’t be a bigot. That family is probably better neighbors than most of the hypocrites here.

I think it is you who are “over reacting. I say nothing about the parents being bad parents…I say they are stupid parents. Actually I am a very strong advocate for the rights of parents vs. gov control and have been speaking out strongly against the Fed government declaring that the state now is totally responsible for the “adult formation of children” (take time to read the health care act…it’s all there). What I am saying is that NO ONE SHOULD JUST PICK UP A DEAD ANIMAL SO CASUALLY. Rabies is very much a reality where I live. I spend a significant amount of my time out doors and in fact spent six months walking across this country in the woods and wilderness. I do believe that kids should be allowed to explore their world…play with critters…yes, even snakes…but you better teach them the difference between a black on red and red on black when they identify the snake they are going to be reaching for and the difference between a black racer vs. an indigo.
It is not about keeping kids away from natural curiosity and exploration..it is about teaching them about the world around them and encouraging that exploration…safely. And yes, “physical death is the end product of living”…believe me, I know that more than you could possibly understand…and if you are saying “death is not evil” I agree. “Death” is not something to be feared. Rabies however….

If either parent had an ounce of common sense maybe Dad could have videoed Mom explaining to the little girl what happened,then perhaps placing it in a shoebox or whatever and having a small burial ceremony. I believe that would be called instilling a sense of EMPATHY and COMPASSION in your child. Instead this child got a lesson in moral relativism.

I’m not even sure where I learned to do this, but somewhere along the line, I must have been taught.
I wonder what would have been said about me and mine… had there been ‘instant’ online video of our ‘wild animal graveyards’?
P.S. Babies – world wide – under 5 years old run around in their diapers/undies… every try to keep clothes on them?

You gotta pick your battles as a parent. I personally will save my lecturing, angry voice for when my daughter comes home to late, gets bad grades, talks back to me, etc. I can’t get upset at a toddler for being curious about a cute fuzzy animal that is actually letting her pick it up! She’s sweet as can be and I just wanna hug her! After a bath of course ;)

The bacillus is extremely virulent. Laboratory mice die after being infected with just three bacilli – and fleas can disgorge up to 24,000 in one bite. Whilst rats were the most common carriers in medieval times other rodents, such as squirrels , have transmitted the disease in advanced Western countries, such as the USA in recent years. The plague is transmitted by the rodent buy the flea. The disease, when caught this way, travels through the lymph system causing the lymph glands to swell the lymph nodes and discolour and turn a black color – hence the descriptive name Black Death. The areas normally affected are the armpits and the groin. Modern antibiotics have a good chance of combating the disease but there is still a high mortality rate unless treated early. It has a 1-15% mortality rate in treated cases and a 40-60% mortality rate in untreated cases.

As for kids being curious, last possum the dog killed the neighborhood childlren wanted to SEE IT please? Who knows why, I would not let them.

Animals don’t neccessarily have to be decomposed to transmit disease, especially not rodents. Rodents are notorius for carrying deadly disease, that’s why they’re considered vermin. Squirrels really are pests. Vermin/varmint/varmit.

Posted on May 13, 2011 at 12:12pmI agree. I think the death of an animal (especially a cute squirrel) at the hands of her dog would normally be disturbing to a child. My children would have been disturbed and they didn’t have “issues”.
She was almost giddy. Gee. I guess times are a changin’. I woouldn’t say her parents are bad, as noted , they didn’t over react, however I don’t think they handled the situation properly. They should have strongly discouraged her from touching (or in this case playing with) the animal because of the disease factor. Maybe they know something I don’t. Hillbillies eat squirrel road kill and live, I guess.

I would not let the child touch the squirell dead or alive because of germs and diseases.I think the whole thing is warped.My cats don’t even try to catch anything because in the past when they picked up a tiny snake or a chipmunk I take them away or say drop it and they do. They then get baths and their teeth brushed. They had rather not catch the animals so they don’t have to go thru that. lol

It’s not like she killed the squirrel for heaven’s sake. My daughter is about the same age, and to be honest, she probably would have been scared and would refuse to go near it. But this little girl seems sweet, friendly, is tender with the dead squirrel and did exactly what her dad told her to do when he asked her to put it down and come inside for a bath. Pick your battles, folks.

Why do parents let their little spawn run around outside in naught but panties anyway? Do they have no sense of decorum? No one but the local pedos wants to see that.
And yes, they should have had SOME kind of reaction other than just standing their slack-jawed and dumb. Take the squirrel away from the girl, tell you flatly that dead things are no play things, and then go give her a nice, hot bath in hopes she doesn’t catch anything from the exposure she’s already had. They should not have prolonged the exposure like they did.

I think the only thing I was appalled by was the running around in just panties. I’d probably react like the mom if my daughter did that. As long as I knew how the squirrel died and it wasn’t hemorrhaging blood everywhere, no harm, no foul. Just inside and bathe. Though, I doubt she’d care much for a dead squirrel anyway.

My daughter is 3 and spends much of her time around the house in her underwear, I can dress her 100 times but within minutes she’s undressed again. Its just how children are, and most people with children know this. Another thing most people with children know is that you have to pick your battles and this is not one worth fighting over. If the kid wants to wear just her undies, so be it, save your energy for the bigger battles because with toddlers there are plenty.

No problem with 2 and 3 year olds running around in their house with just underwear on, but when you put her in front of a camera and share it with the world, that’s a horse of a different color. The dead squirrel further shows the lack of judgement displayed by the parents. Dead animals have diseases, and are a health hazard. No instruction from Dad. Mom comes in foul mouthed. Put those two together, you might have a combined IQ of a small household appliance.

I doubt the squirrel was more dangerous than the dog that killed it. The dog is probably carrying the same germs…at least it is now. I think it is a little yucky but harmless. I definitely think a lot of people overreacted to it.

I’m sure she was carrying it when her daddy first saw her with it, so getting freaked out about her carrying it wouldn’t make much difference by then. I’m sure she doesn’t understand the cocept of death yet, she just thinks she’s finally able to carry around one of those soft, cute squirrels. They can probably use it as a teaching moment if they choose. If not, oh well. There will be many more of those moments. That’s life. The mom in me thinks: At least she’s going to go take a bath afterward…

Made me sick, but I guess it happens when the child is looking for something to cuddle or save. Is that so bad?
