In a bombshell interview set to air on tomorrow’s editions of “World News with Diane Sawyer” and “Nightline,” former Washington Post and Huffington Post journalist Jose Antonio Vargas reveals that he’s an illegal immigrant.
Vargas, who is coming forward despite deportation fears, explains that he didn’t know he was undocumented until he attempted to get a driver’s permit. Now, he’s working to support immigration reforms, including the contentious DREAM Act. To work toward these efforts, the former reporter founded an organization called Define American (this organization is a project of the Tides Center, which is linked to the Tides Foundation. The latter has received millions of dollars in funding from liberal billionaire George Soros).
TV Newser has more about his story:
Vargas’s mother sent him from the Philippines to live with his grandparents in Mountain View, CA when he was 12 years old. He didn’t realize he was undocumented until, at 16, he went to get his driver’s permit. He eventually got a valid driver’s license from the state of Oregon — the final barrier to being hired by The Washington Post.
A year after joining the Post, in a 2006 interview with FishbowlDC, Vargas talked about owning just one suit, given to him by his high school principal whom he calls his “adoptive mom.” Vargas was a part of the WaPo team that won the Pulitzer Prize for their coverage of the 2007 Virginia Tech shootings.
Watch a preview of Vargas’ ABC News interview with Dan Harris, below:
Also, here is a YouTube video in which Vargas explains his immigration challenges:
(h/t TVNewser)
UPDATE: As the day has progressed, more details about Vargas have come out. National Review reports the following:
Vargas entered the country illegally after his grandfather paid a coyote $4,500 to smuggle him in. The grandfather then obtained a fake passport and green card for Vargas, which they used to acquire a valid Social Security card. But that card, which subjected Vargas’ right to work to the approval of the then-INS, was illegally doctored, allowing Vargas to secure job after job for more than a decade by showing nothing more than a photocopy of a fake document
And MSNBC writes:
Vargas was hired for internships at The San Francisco Chronicle and the Philadelphia Daily News. He was denied an internship at The Seattle Times because he didn’t have all the documents they required. But he kept applying and got an offer from The Washington Post.

Jun. 22, 2011 at 3:25pmAnd people wonder why our nation is in the sorry state it is? Our entire governement is ran entirely by resentful blacks who hate whites (or the majority of American citizens), illegal Mexicans (ditto) and other nationalities. THe ONE thing that unites ALL OF THESE people (who coincidentally live off our tax dollars , of course) is their hatred of us (those who largely pay taxes to support their senseless jobs and pentions)!. I guess , We deserve it for not rising up and speaking up against all of this abuse unitl now!

He didn’t know he was illegal? Two possiblities:
1. He’s a liar.
2. He’s stupid.
Since he calls himself “a jounalist”, who is obviously slanted to the left, he may qualify as a stupid liar.

Jun. 22, 2011 at 3:00pmTaken from Free Republic article: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2738366/posts
After I arrived in America, Lolo obtained a new fake Filipino passport, in my real name this time, adorned with a fake student visa, in addition to the fraudulent green card.
Using the fake passport, we went to the local Social Security Administration office and applied for a Social Security number and card. It was, I remember, a quick visit. When the card came in the mail, it had my full, real name, but it also clearly stated: “Valid for work only with I.N.S. authorization.”
When I began looking for work, a short time after the D.M.V. incident, my grandfather and I took the Social Security card to Kinko’s, where he covered the “I.N.S. authorization” text with a sliver of white tape. We then made photocopies of the card. At a glance, at least, the copies would look like copies of a regular, unrestricted Social Security card.
Later, with the help of sympathetic teachers, Vargas obtained a drivers license in Oregon using subterfuge and a fake Social Security card.

Jun. 22, 2011 at 6:17pmI read the article. This is a perfect example and a teachable moment as to what is wrong with the current official stance on illegal immigration. Everything Vargas has done and will do, including his insipid organization “Define American” is tainted by his criminality. He has no credibility, and ABC News is wasting their time broadcasting his “sad” tale. Just as he wants to be the “face” of his cause, he can be the “face” of illegal immigation and suffer the consequences as should all those who enabled and abetted him.

Why doesn’t he spend his time in his native Country being a journalist, trying to improve their lives and economy in Mexico. If he wants to come back, he can get in line like my grandparents did. Legal Immigrants that assimilate are Americans. I do know a lot of Mexicans do not want to be American. They just want to work and live here. that is an Invasion.

Jun. 22, 2011 at 7:09pmYou have a point. The people who helped him perpetuate his fraud could have spared him a whole lot of trouble if they had put together a pool of money and hired a very competent immigration attorney to handle his case, while it was still fresh and he had not yet sullied his hands with it for many years. Sure, it would have meant he had to wait years and spend tons of money before getting a green card, but at least, he could have had a clean conscience by now.
Too late now.
He’s going to have to pay a very heavy price to show that he’s indeed an American. May we suggest to make him enlist in the U.S. Armed Forces and serve for ten years before he’s ever granted citizenship?

I don’t believe we should reward or punnish those who were brought here as children. We should just make them prove their willingness to support our laws by witnessing against those who broke them in order for them to take advantage of them.

Yes, I DO think the Dream Act is giving special privileges to people who have broken the law, and want to be rewarded for doing so. Do not support the Dream Act. The problem we have in immigration is like everything else……government. IF our government upheld our laws instead of thinking they are above them we would have no problems like we have now. But I don’t like to play the “collective game”. Yes, I realize that Jose Antonio Vargas was hand picked to farther an agenda…I don’t know if he is 1 in 100, 1000, or 1,000,000. I don’t believe Blaze banned her….in a boring moment I went back a few days, looked at posts and it appears the current new name is there instead of the name shown when the post was made…..she’s just changed her user name in her member profile.
In another bored moment, I did ask about the name in another post today in response to her question about my name. Haven’t bothered to go back and check for an answer – probably won’t be one. She has a track record of resorting to rude childish taunts or she “cuts & runs” when someone turns her own words back on her & she can’t wiggle out of them.
Perhaps she has nothing better to do? But then again who cares? (unless you’re bored for a moment and want some comic relief)

This one is about a woman who entered USA in 1997 under false pretenses, then applied for political asylum. She lost in courts, exhausted her appeals but never left althought she was ordered deported to India. She had brought a daughter to USA with her, who is now in UC Davis pre-med, and when she realized that she is illegal like her mother and ordered deported by the courts, she started a facebook campaign and people wrote to ICE to stop her and her mom’s deportation. She won a delay from ICE.

American Citizens who break the law are subject to fines, punishment, incarceration etc. Why should he be excused for his crime? And the legal punishment for illegal immigrants is deportation.
He doesn’t seem to meet any of the criteria listed in Obama’s biased Executive Order:
