Behold Yoda: Chinese Crested-Chihuahua Mix Deemed ‘Ugliest Dog’

PETALUMA, California (AP) — Yoda’s short tufts of hair, protruding tongue, and long, seemingly hairless legs were enough to earn it the World’s Ugliest Dog title at a Northern California fair.

The 14-year-old Chinese crested and Chihuahua mix won the honor Friday night at the 23rd annual contest at the Sonoma Marin Fair.

Owner Terry Schumacher of Hanford, California, says the 2-pound (900-gram) dog has come a long way since she was found abandoned behind an apartment building. Schumacher says she first thought the pooch was a rat.

Yoda’s distinction comes a year after a one-eyed Chihuahua named Princess Abby claimed victory. A pedigree Chinese crested won in 2008 and another Chinese crested and Chihuahua mix was the ugliest in 2007.

In past years, the winner’s owner has received a $1,000 check.

Why do humans come up with things like this, the ugliest dog award. Poor little thing cannot help what he looks like and I think its awful that his owner would parade him around.

Oh my gosh, truly a statement on beauty in the eye of the beholder!. Never had a small dog until we got our first schnauser, now I get it. Even fell in love with my chihuahua grandog, although he does give those little guys a very good name. God has given us a great gift in our dogs (and cats!) He knew we would need fur to cry on at times, when no shoulder was available.

The dog is 14 years old and has had to have all it’s teeth pulled out. Let the poor old thing stay home instead of dragging it out in front of a bunch of loons to make fun of.

My sister has a Chinese Crested-Chihuahua Mix. Ugliest dog I’ve ever seen (including the one pictured above.) The dog is always cold, and spoiled rotten. The damned dog is hand fed and wrapped up in a baby blanket to keep it from shivering. And the worst thing – it’s not house-broken yet and it’s 5 years old!

Ugh… generally I find all lap dogs useless and repulsive. To each his own. Anything smaller and less useful than a beagle is to be generally ignored in my opinion, but little, ugly dogs need love, too. To be honest, I’ve met some Yorkies that are fine little canines. No love for any Chihuahua… they tend to be either nasty, neurotic or some combination thereof.
