Can Hot Dogs ‘Wreck Your Life?’ New Indiana Billboard Tells NASCAR Fans Yes

Move over cigarettes. There’s an alleged new cancer-causing stick in town. But according to one health organization, the new deadly product isn’t made of tobacco, but rather meat. That’s because its apparently a hot dog.

The group Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine has paid to place a prominent billboard outside the world-famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway warning patrons of the dangers of hot dogs. It features a group of roasted wieners popping out of a cigarette box with the statement, “Warning: Hot Dogs Can Wreck Your Health:”

Hot Dogs Can Wreck Your Life New Indianapolis Motor Speedway Billboard Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine

It directs the public to a website called cancerproject.org, where a press release explains the group’s position.

“According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, just one 50-gram serving of processed meat (about the amount in one hot dog) consumed daily increases the risk of colorectal cancer, on average, by 21 percent,” the release says.

“A hot dog a day could send you to an early grave,” the group’s nutrition education director Susan Levin says in the release.“Processed meats like hot dogs can increase your risk for diabetes, heart disease, and various types of cancer. Like cigarettes, hot dogs should come with a warning label that helps racing fans and other consumers understand the health risk.”

It adds: “A review in the journal Diabetologia found that those who regularly eat processed meats increase their risk for diabetes by 41 percent.”

The campaign is a well-timed one. Thousands are expected to file into the popular race track for the running of the Brickyard 400, hot dogs in hand.

UPDATE:

Blaze commenter RabiaDiluvio posted and e-mailed an interesting link alleging that the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine is really a front organization for animal rights activists.

The website activistcash.com says:

The American Medical Association (AMA), which actually represents the medical profession, has called PCRM a “fringe organization” that uses “unethical tactics” and is “interested in perverting medical science.”

That site is a service of the Center for Consumer Freedom, which has an entire website devoted to debunking the physician group.

It points to a Feb. 2004 Newsweek article to support its claim:

“Less than 5 percent of PCRM’s members are physicians,” Newsweek wrote in February 2004. The respected news magazine continued:

[PCRM president Neal] Barnard has co-signed letters, on PCRM letterhead, with the leader of Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty, an animal-rights group the Department of Justice calls a “domestic terrorist threat.” PCRM also has ties to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. An agency called the Foundation to Support Animal Protection has distributed money from PETA to PCRM in the past and, until very recently, did both groups’ books. Barnard and PETA head Ingrid Newkirk are both on the foundation’s board.

Currently, that Newsweek article is listed but unavailable on the Newsweek site.

Gotta go against a lot of the Blazers here, but sorry, hotdogs are pure crap and they have zero nutritional value. Healthcare starts at the end of your fork folks. With liberty comes responsibility. Garbage food and what it is doing to health in this country is a scam and it’s shameful.

I don’t in any way condone government getting their big fat noses into regulating the restaurant and food industries…what…oh gee, they do that anyway. The FDA is nothing but a revolving door for bureaucrats to create favorable regulations for their food industry buddies. The FDA and food companies have traded top executives like kids trading baseball cards. Food in this country is a complete scam.

If you want your own healthcare plan, be aware of what you eat. Would you put garbage fuel in your automobile? Why put garbage fuel in your body?

They do make all meat hotdogs with not as many nitrates or bad stuff. I have to agree that the cheap ones have far too many nitrates and use the bad parts of meat.

So who cares if they have no nutritional value and you don’t like them? If you don’t like them, don’t eat them- but don’t presume to put others on a guilt trip because they eat them. It isn’t harming you any. Life is a terminal occupation- it’s about time Amerikans understood that and just let others live their lives as they want.

I’m (well) lets just say, a senior and I have been eating Hot Dogs for my entire life. That is all we could afford when I was younger and was real happy to have them. This sounds like Gore’s Global warming crap. Eat everything in moderation and don’t give it a thought, unless you have an allergy. Then leave that to the rest of us. That includes cigarettes.

I was practically raised on hot dogs and hamburgers. No problem here. I think a case could be made connecting this so called report with Mrs. Obummer and her attempt at telling us what to eat and when to take a dump. We should all mail the white house a pack of hot dogs and a bag of potato chips to go with it. Thanks a lot Blaze, now I want a bologna sandwich and a Ballpark frank (all beef of coarse).

Modern cigarette smoking is an oral fixation. There is a proven correlation to smoking filter cigarettes and male oral sex. Obama quit to avoid being manipulated by foreign spies. In the speaker’s case it is less likely that he can be manipulated if he just sticks to smoking.

If you can eat hot dogs every day, good luck to you. I consider them a very salty treat eaten occasionaly at cook outs. In fact I do not know anyone in my whole life who eats hot dogs every day. Strange they picked hot dogs. I would have thought bacon or other nitrate items, (ham, sausage etc), eaten for breakfast would have caused more trouble. At any rate, most people get eating preserved meats in moderation, don’t think it was worth a billboard and being compared to cigarettes. Kinda silly.

Jenny Lind is right…….Why pick on the hotdog?
Truth is any processed food is not the best. But in moderation, as with anything, (except the cigarettes), it’s no big deal. There are many more unhealthy foods that are consumed more often by consumers than the hotdog.
And with that being said, it’s been awhile since I had one. So I may just have a dog for lunch today! Maybe even a 7-11 ‘spicey big bite’ or a “Bahama Momma”. Hard to pass up that free melted cheese looking substance and ‘chilli in a bag’ from a large metal dispenser!…..I’ll conpensate for the bad stuff buy adding some chopped fresh onion……………………
