House Passes Debt Deal 269 to 161, Gabrielle Giffords Casts First Vote Since Her Shooting

House Votes to Pass Debt Deal 269 to 161 Gabrielle Giffords Borrowing LimitWASHINGTON (The Blaze/AP) — The House has passed legislation designed to keep the government from defaulting on its debts. The measure also sets a course for reducing the federal deficit in the future.

The Senate, where support is stronger, is expected to take up the bill on Tuesday, the deadline for Congress to act before the government loses its ability to pay all its bills.

The 269-161 vote in the House came after Republican leaders spent the day urging recalcitrant conservatives to support the bill.

The bill would raise the debt ceiling by more than $2 trillion and cut federal spending by a similar amount over the next decade. A special congressional committee would be set up to consider entitlement and tax changes.

This was also the first vote cast by Rep. Gabrielle Giffords since being critically injured during a shooting rampage in Arizona. According to Fox News Insider, Giffords shared why she felt she “had to be here for this vote”:

β€œI have closely followed the debate over our debt ceiling and have been deeply disappointed at what’s going on in Washington,” Giffords said. β€œAfter weeks of failed debate in Washington, I was pleased to see a solution to this crisis emerge. I strongly believe that crossing the aisle for the good of the American people is more important than party politics. I had to be here for this vote. I could not take the chance that my absence could crash our economy.”

      The Tea Party did not want this “deal”. The Tea Party supported a bill that was PASSED with bi-partisan support In the House and plenty of time to avoid this last minute disaster. It was the Dems who blocked it and wouldn’t even allow it to be debated. if they would have at least debated that bill, added ammendments if they thought they had to and allowed the Senate to have a vote we could have saved a lot of time.

      usmama – if there is bi-partisan support, how could the dems hold it up? probably because it stank for the nation.
      dr funk wants to “solve” the spending crisis, then come up with a plan that funds the bush tax cuts (revenues have increased 48 out of the last 50 years, regardless of tax rates), funds the wars in iraq and afghanistan (that bush didn’t put on the books, but kept funded with “continuing resolutions”) and fund the bush promulgated prescription drug plan.

      The two-party system sucks–that’s why they’re both bland clones of each other. A multi-party system based upon a unicameral house whose members were elected from a single national district based upon a PR vote would be preferable. Then people could vote based upon preference and not based upon who was the lesser of two evils.

      Welcome back, Gabby Giffords! No doubt she’ll be dealing with the aftermath of that shooting for the rest of her life; let’s wish her all the best regardless of her politics.

      A shame the debt ceiling change is immediate and the matching spending cuts are over the next 10 years but what more could you expect with only the House? There’ll be three presidential elections before a decade’s out; anything can change. The important thing now is to stay the course, make sure the next Presidents and Congresses are on board with what needs to be done.

      Allen West is right, and understands that you can’t win a war in a single battle when you’re this far outnumbered. Take the victory you can get and set up for the next one. Those ready to give up because the right side didn’t get everything it could wish for, please remember this is for the survival of the Republic. This is way too important to take your ball and go home. Stay focussed, there’s still lots to do and lots to be accomplished in the coming weeks, months and years!

      At the end of the day, the GOP buckled under the pressure when push came to shove on CC&B. Instead of sticking with that bill and not allowing a debt increase without a BBA, they negotiated against themselves for a month and ended up doing a deal that will ultimately get our AAA rating downgraded. You would think a bunch of attorneys would have a better idea of how to negotiate raher than the way they showed their collective a**es to the public the last 30 days. I applaud the folks that voted “no” and stuck to the fundamentals, which was that no bill should be passed that the ratings agencies couldn’t give their stamp of approval. CC&B was that bill. The sound of that bag of bones McConnell makes me want to puke!!! I hope he chokes on his breakfest tomorrow morning and strokes out and the Westboro Church protests at his stinking funeral for being a traitor to common sense. Not really, that is over the line. I just hope he chokes and strokes out with a peacable funeral procession.

      It is always a delight when we see someone come in acting like they are a real brainiac spouting off at the mouth and then suddenly they look up where there is a mirror and all they see is themselves sitting on the toilet having diarrhea and then they realize that what they have been hearing themselves say is just the noise of the splahing of the toilet water. BTW: The reason that it was a “rushed package” was because the old time republicans and the RINO’s were too chickensh*t to stand up to the liberal anti-American commies on the democratic side and in the White House. If they had been “man” enough to stand up for the Cut, Cap & Balance Amendment and refused to pass ANYTHING that they demoncrats wanted, it is a pretty safe bet that the demoncrats would have caved in and for the FIRST time in their lives been forced to do something for the benefit of this nation.

      I’m going to play the part of a ruthless cynic and ask a couple questions:

      1. Why did Giffords just so happen to show up on the very day they were voting for the literal destruction of America if this passed?

      2. Does Giffords not have a (D) after her name?

      3. Are not Democrats without question the worlds experts on emotions & feelings?

      4, Is it possible that they would actually convince her to arrive this day to stir up emotions and get these people all worked up and not thinking clearly??

      I’m sorry but, I would never put it passed the Dems to do this. This is only conjecture, but wow….look at that vote count after many Democrats said they were not happy with this bill.

      However, I do wish the best for Mrs.Giffords and I can only hope she was not pawned on Monday by the very people who seek to destroy our country.

      Ignore TIFOSA…the idiot clearly has a memory like a sieve. The Ryan budget was shelved by Reid. The original GOP plan to curb spending was shelved by Reid. Obama stubbornly refused to put a plan on paper. Obama’s original budget earlier this year raised spending by 3.7 trillion with NO spending cuts. Obama raised his tax amount…I mean revenue…during the talks after he’d agreed on a lower number which prompted Cantor and Boehner to leave the talks. Before that Obama stormed out of the talks saying “don’t call my bluff”. The democrats in the Senate sent a letter to Boehner saying they’ll vote against the deal BEFORE even seeing it. Just ignore TIFOSA..the fairy “avatar” she’s chosen for this site is clearly a metaphor for her own lightheadedness.

    Like I have said repub/ dem, left/ right nothing but the two faces of the progressive beast in complete denial. The scenario below is our reality.

    John/Jane Homemaker make $1500 a month their bills are $3000+. They charge necessities like food and fuel on their credit cards which are maxed out, leaving the remaining money to pay rent/mortgage and barely make minimum credit card payment. John/Jane Homemaker technically are bankrupt but keep plugging away thinking things will get better. They are in denial and will NEVER be in a position to dig out of the credit hole they are in as the interest compounds at an alarming rate as their credit rating drops from late or pmts below min due. They nolonger eat out, go to the movies, run their A/C or engage in any activities that require funds they dont have. In other words have cut spending. None of this matter as again they are bankrupt and technically havent made it official by filing.

    No credit card company or bank in the world would increase their limits yet that is what has happened with the US. This nation is broke, the U.S. IS BANKRUPT. Raising the debt ceiling and making pathetic cuts that barely put a ding on the total debt is insulting to the intelligence of the American people. Everyone that voted for this needs to be kicked out of office period.

      I agree with you 100%. and most (but not all) of the people in both parties SUCK. How can you be a responsible adult with a brain and not see where we are headed. Even the talk about balancing the budget…I’m just afraid they will balance it…by raising taxes. You know, we used to be middle class…not anymore. I don’t think there is a middle class anymore. It’s all very sad. The ones who will really feel it are our kids and grandkids.

    You hear all these complaints of tea party congressman not going along, not compromising and hostage taking. well how come the vote was 269-161? Should it be 460-0? Come on media.

      I thought the Republicans had a chance to take over both houses next year off of the momentun from last November.Now its up in the air since all the Republicans will be voted outin mass like the Democrats did that voted for the health bill. By voting for it, if the Republicans take control they will just have to set up the big fall when they have to cut spending and raise taxes. Obama os partying tonight for he will probably be reelected, The republicans also will not be able kill the health care law. It will ride on the shoulders of the Supreme Court and the liberals will control that.

      I’m with you,I won’t vote for anyone who voted yes, if It’s anyone from Maine, which I am sure our 2 Dem’s from Maine probably did. I was holding up my donation to the repub. party until I saw how this came out, so they are not getting my money now. They let us down again. 2 trillion more in debt? and the decreased how much this year? 7 billion? or is it 700 billion? Glenn talked about it this AM. Less than 2 days of borrowing. I am dissapointed.

      No. Allen West was right. This compromise needed done, the other choice was much worse and the people in the know knew it. West stood on principle and did not duck behind some RINO “yea” vote for cover like Bachmann and others did. West knows the score and knew this would not be a popular vote but he manned up.

      NO. Allan West was wrong, and so was anyone that voted for this.

      The republicans had a chance in the house to save the US economy by an automatic balanced budget, if the democrats wouldn’t pass cut cap and balance. Peter Schiff just indicated its not a tax on future generations but will be an immediate tax on this generation through inflation from QE3 and QE4 to pay for all this. Our only hope was to stop the debt and start to pay if back. FAIL. FAIL. FAIL.
      History has shown that that is the only thing that works, and what we got was the only thing that always fails..

      Bye bye to all the dummies who believed the BIG LIE repeated almost everywhere that we had to do this to avoid a default and voted for this.

      IMHO, we’ve been seeing this movie play out since aroud 2002 – with our party screwing us royally. So, even if Obama gets booted, who replaces him more than likely? Another RINO. So, the cycle begins again, they screw up and make Republicans look bad yet again.

      I’m sticking to my belief that it’s gonna take probably another presidential election cycle before the fence sitters get their heads outta their asses and join the “right” side. It’s really unfortunate that so many people in this country don’t want to see the truth. All it does is prolong our agony.

We are screwed and the tea party republicans who voted for this should be voted out but they won’t because the Tea Party won’t speak out against their own, just look at them defending Allen West. I was in the Tea Party before the Tea Party was cool and now it has become such a basterdized version of itself we are all done. Get ready for hyperinflation and massive taxes because thats what the Republicans just gave us.

    We’ve been duped, but also I have to give credit to WE THE PEOPLE, i.e., the TEA Partisans who kept the bill from raising taxes, to cut more than it raised, and to include the balanced budget amendment. It’s far from perfect, and we’re still going to be slapped, but if it were not for US, it would be FAR worse.

    Kudos to you, my fellow TEA Partisans!

      This is being sold as a compromise and a win for the conservatives. It really couldn’t be farther from the truth. This bill will add as much to our downfall as the bills forced through such as TARP. Not enough good people in high enough places.

      And before you go on about it, I will support you 100% in closing tax loopholes, ensuring the wealthy do pay their fair share of taxes, and cleaning up any corruption where it can be found. While we are at it, let’s put an end to special interest bucks, place serious limits on campaign contributions, exclude union AND business support, and decrease the pay scale of ALL government employees.

      Let’s also look into entitlement fraud. My wife is a Medicare expert by profession and can relate nursing home scams all day long.

      Why not just stop the partisan bickering, all the throw granny off the cliff rhetoric, and try to find some common ground before we all go down? Do you really think big government is the answer?

      Corporations don’t go overseas because of taxes,they get tax breaks overseas too.;they go overseas to get cheap labor.Standard fear tactic used to keep workers from unionizing was to tell them if they unionize they’ll bo overseas and they won’t have any job at all. Now it’s if you tax them they’ll go overseas and you won’t have a job at all.Scare tactics designed to get workers enslaved to the greedy rich corporations and businesses now used to keep worrkers from demanding the corporations and rich need not be treated like sacred cows but should pay more taxes!
