DETROIT (AP) — Officials say a stunt wing walker has died after falling about 200 feet at an air show in southeastern Michigan.
A spokesman at Selfridge Air National Guard Base says wing walker Todd Green was trying to move from a plane to a helicopter when he fell Sunday at the base in Harrison Township, about 20 miles northeast of Detroit.
Technical Sgt. Dan Heaton says the accident happened about 1:30 p.m. He says an ambulance rushed Green to Mount Clemens Regional Medical Center. Hospital spokeswoman Diane Kish says Green died from his injuries.
The air show began Friday and ended Sunday.

Aug. 21, 2011 at 11:09pmHauschild, I was there he had about 4 seconds before he hit the ground as it was a very low altitude stunt. I was completely baffled and shocked at the incident today. But like many have said before, he died doing what he loved to do, may I be as fortunate. God bless him, and I give my prayers to his wife and son. And two the two pilots as they will be in need of much support over the coming weeks.

Aug. 21, 2011 at 9:39pmPeople will die tomorrow .. in a car going to work .. crossing a street … doing any number of things .. this man died doing something he chose to do .. condolences to the family and friends .. but we all will die someday .. hopefully doing something we like .. or God willing old age. He I am certain knew the risks . … and people have been doing these types of stunts since the beginning of aviation.
Freedom to live and do what you want .. what a wonderful idea. I pray we can hold onto it .. the government regulates too much of life as it is.
Once again prayers for family and friends .. and the man who lost his life .. doing what he must have loved.

Personally I assess the risk to the best of my ability; then make a risk/reward evaluation. I WILL NOT have someone arbitrarily tell me something “is to dangerous”.
If anything; give me all the information available and let me make my OWN DECISION.
that is what the wingwalker did his choice.

While yes it is sad that these deaths do happen, when I was a child I dreamed of being a pilot. And it would have been extra cool if I were an air show pilot, and on top of that If I died while living my dreams I would have been happy to go out that way.

Aug. 21, 2011 at 9:18pmI’ve seen two skydivers swap airplanes via freefall with the both of the planes in dive. They were most concerned with the prop on each plane should freefall/plane dive speed vary too much.

Aug. 22, 2011 at 12:27amA chute would have done no good at all. It takes several hundred feet for a parachute to deploy. It wouldn’t have even had time to slow him down. If it took him 4 seconds from the time he fell to he impacted, you’d figure at best it would have taken him 2 seconds to realize he was falling, then at least 2 seconds to pull his ripcord. That would leave him……flat.
