Are You Ready for Videos From the Jewish ‘Shofar FlashMob?’

You’re about to find out what happens when you mix horns, faith and — flash mobs.

If you’ve been paying attention to pop culture, you probably know that these popular convergences are the rage across America. With groups of performers increasingly coming together at malls and other public venues to randomly dance and perform, the extracurricular activity has gone viral.

While many flash mobs aren’t centered around anything specific (they’re done simply for the fun of it), the pro-Israeli “Shofar FlashMob” was quite different.

Put on by the Art Kibbutz New York, an international Jewish artist colony, participants in 17 cities celebrated by blowing horns and launching a synchronized performance. The Huffington Post has more about the reason for the festivities:

During Elul, the month of preparation before the Jewish High Holidays, Jews are called to teshuvah (repentance/reflection/return) before the new year, and the shofar is a daily wake-up call.

From Lincoln Center in Manhattan to Wrigley Field in Chicago and Ben Yehudah Street in Jerusalem, the flashmob took the Jewish practice of blowing a ram’s horn to a new creative — and spiritual — level.

Art Kibbutz New York describes the successful international event as follows:

The Shofar FlashMob was like a Midrash. Everyone interpreted the sound of the shofar their own way. The participants also greatly differed in each location – with some even opposing each other in intention, style, approach and modality. Yet these discrete spiritual public art action were performed simultaneously by people who would never meet otherwise or would be willing to work together.

    Are you serious??? What kind of statement was that??? I grew up in a Jewish house and Yes the Democrats were voted for up until Carter and his Force Fed sacrifice of the Land for peace with Egypt…We sat at the dinner table and were told when we grew up to vote for the democrats because they were not racists Earthman92, Sadly proved my father right as an individual…But Fortunate for me and My family the week Carter forced the sacrifice of Land we got a New TV as my father threw a coffee cup through the one we did have and we began to vote the issues…When you are taught at the Dinner table this is how your family is to do things You Honor your Father and Mother…Earthman92….Instead of teaching the issues and voting for the candidate that best represents the values important to you and fully understanding them instead of voting blindly then I am sure more people will listen to what you have to say. When you Insult an entire race of people with your hate speech then you accomplish nothing and turn them off to your views completely

    The best flash mob I’ve seen. They weren’t stealing everything in a store, they weren’t trying to pull whitey from a car or beat him up just because he is white. A peaceful joyous gathering of people who are proud of their faith.

    I’m happy for my fellow Jews, but personally, I am sick of flash mobs for any reason. Even the pet rock was cute for awhile, but thankfully we got over that too.

Those that don’t are not!!! This is the New Covenant!!! The Lamb of God offered himself!!! It’s a perpetual sacrifice that never ends!!! You will not be saved and will have no place in Heaven following the Jews or any of Gods other children!!! You can’t avoid the cross and get to Heaven!!! Good Friday always comes before Easter Sunday!!! You can’t get to the Father but through the Son!!!!!!!!!

    @Snowleopard (gallery of cat folks).

    What they are blowing are Rams Horns ( Shofar in hebrew). I believe they are very expensive especially if they are long and curled as you can see in the videos. They are blown on Rosh Hashanah (hebrew new year), If the holiday does not fall out on shabbat (sabbath), also blown on Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement), after sunddown at the close of the holiday.

    You might want to reconsider that purchase since they are very expensive.

      The long spiral horns are from the Greater African Kudu. Raw horns can be found affordably on ebay, then cleaned and drilled for blowing. That’s how I got mine.

    I watched the first video linked on this thread’s front page before reading the post and I got really annoyed wth the horns blowing. That is, until I saw the “Happy New Year” at the end. Then it made sense.

    This is a great story. It’s a shame that whenever stories like this turn up, whose participants are not of a Jewish or Christian faith, many here would ridicule them. Nonetheless, I applaud these folks and wish them many blessings.

      I agree great story.

      Even though I think the flash mob fad is rather ridiculous (because of the reasons flash mobs are usually organized), This is probably the best thing a flash mob has ever been used for.

      No I am not Jewish, or christian or any other organized religion, I have my own beliefs but they don’t exclude any religion that does not teach hate. in the end we will all know the truth. but there is never a reason to hate those that adhere to different beliefs.

      If you are referring to violent black flash mobs, or Muslim flash mobs that are anti-Semitic and full of hate, then why shouldn’t they be ridiculed? Non-Christian and non-Jewish flash mobs are often something to protect oneself and your business against and property damage and injury to humans often results. But you don’t want to ridicule that, it should be condemned not ridiculed.

      The only thing I can think of as to why the Jews vote Democrat is because of their sense of loyalty. Loyal to the Democrat that had a hand in creating their Homeland. Good ole President Truman… Time to change parties my Jewish brothers and sisters… Mr Truman would be considered a hard core conservative by todays standards.
