Georgia Town Raises Nearly $4,000 Off of Saggy Pants Fines

Sagging Pants Equals Rising Revues

It's a good look on you. No, really . . .

Authorities in Albany, Ga. may have found a solution to the national economic crisis.

The answer? Fine people with laughably bad fashion sense that borderlines on “indecent exposure.”

On Nov. 23 of last year, the city of Albany instituted a ban on anyone wearing pants (or skirts) more than three inches below the hips.

The first saggy-pants ordinance violator less than nine months ago started a cash flow to the city, reports the Albany Herald

Under the ordinance “the municipal court shall have the same authority as the superior court to enforce obedience to its orders, judgments and sentences.”

“The Municipal Court advises that 187 citations have been issued and fines collected of $3,916.49,” since the ordinance went into effect Nov. 23 says City Attorney Nathan Davis.

First-time offenders must pay a $25 fine. On subsequent offenses, the fine can run as high as $200.

Considering that the Albany Police Department is averaging more than 20 citations a month for the indecent exposure saggy pants ordinance, it is possible the rest of the year could add another $1,500 to the city’s general fund pot, reports the Herald.

Although the ordinance prohibits arrest or imprisonment for violations, it can impose 40 hours of community service to be completed in lieu of fines.

Sagging Pants Equals Rising Revues

Disregarding polite society is not a constitutional right.

The inhabitants of Albany are not only spared the uninvited parade of drawers, but they will also have clean roads.

Doesn’t sound like a bad deal.

But wait! There’s more!

Albany is not alone among the cities that want to do away with the pants-around-the-ankle look. It has been reported that other cities in Georgia including Dublin, Hawkinsville, Plains, and Rome have similar ordinances or are considering them.

Furthermore, other states such as Florida, Virginia and Louisiana also have cities with the ban or are considering a ban, according to the website USATODAY.com.

If this trend were to catch on, then towns and cities across the nation could generate the revenue they need to operate and at the same time instruct fashion-challenged citizens on the benefits of wearing a belt.

The problem is this cuases a medical condition later on in life. You will be able to tell by the way these kids walk when they get older, assuming they even grow up. Finally a solution to resolve a future medical condition. This is one of the worst fads I’ve ever seen and really, everybody wants to be a gangsta these days. That’s certainly says something about music, media and our public schoools. See, the kids are learning something.

My friends let me know when you are really ready to talk about govt getting out of our lives. You can’t be half baked with me. And if it is that easy for big brother to take you off your mark, then it’s no wonder there is a democrat in the big house.

Some of us are Conservative, not Libertarians. And we can walk and chew gum at the same time. We can fight for community standards of decency AND for fiscal restraint and accountability and Constitutional restrictions on Federal power. It’s not an either/or.

Not one libertarian that I know smokes weed or does any drug. That idiotic, stereotypical lie you people like to continue to push shows your true prejudiced nature. Prejudiced against anyone or anything that’s different then what you want. It’s a sad and stupid way to live your miserable lives. Just because libertarians support liberty does not mean they condone immoral actions. I’m sorry you people are just to hard-headed and set in your ways to EVER be able to see anything other than what you want to.

Ok, so I’m not really agreeing with the government being able to take away your right to wear what you want , how you want if its not nudity, BUT, I’m totally ok with them fining these people just for being totally stupid. Maybe we could fine them for trying to influence society to look stupid??

So much for our future leaders, huh…If I caught my son wearing his clothes like that, his ass would be so damn beaten that he wouldn’t be able to sit for a month. I brought him into this world, I can take him out.
Like a previous comment said, it origionated in prison. The lower the pants, the more they take it in the ****. How can stupid parents not have worthless, stupid kids? Actually, they are less than worthless…Worthless is neutral, while these morons are supported on the tax funded welfare roles.

This isn’t about race lengid67 and why are you so concerned with what inner city kids are wearing. I live in Columbia SC and there are just as many sagging pants at USC as there are at Benedict college This is not about race, it’s about govt once more trying to regulate. Are you blinded now because the picture show two black teens?. You can see how they are trying to pacify you with this nonsense, while the real problems go un-checked.

I wonder how it is that no one here has a problem with setting the precedent of Mother Government decided what you can and cannot wear.

If it were indecent exposure, the ALREADY EXISTING LAW would have been enough. Since they needed to make a NEW law, it has absolutely NOTHING to do with indecent exposure. This is another violation of our freedoms couched in the lies of public interest. I cannot believe you people are falling for that bs.

That’s an idiotic argument. Indecent exposure is not an absolute term that is equal everywhere. It reflects the public sense of decency and the laws exist to reflect that and also the perceived threat to that.

And there is no precedent in decency laws at the local level. That’s where proper conservatives believe they should be. Thta’s where they always HAVE been.

      Islesfordian-

So, if you believe that local governments should be able to enforce “decency laws”, including imposing fines for sagging pants that don’t show anything more than another layer of clothing, do you support a predominately Muslim community’s right to decide that women without burkas on are “indecent”? Or are you that hypocritical to impose your moral values on people while not letting anyone else do the same?

Democracy rules, even in muslim majority towns. There are ways to deal with the problem of a community being taken oevr by Muslim majorities that don’t entail depriving all communities from enforcing public decency standards. But that solution would require having political leaders who understood the superiority of Western Civilization to Islam and were willing to defend it.

It boils down to, no boundaries. These children have been taught to disrespect authority on all levels, from parents to police. As I have always told my children, there is boundries in life that must be set, and if you choose to cross those boundries, then you must be prepared to face the consequences.

I do understand peoples fear of too much police state, but someone has to start setting limits for the youth.

As a parent of a young man in this generation, who has tried this look, not in my house, by him or his friends. Some boy walks in my house with his pants down, I simply tell him that neither I nor my daughter care to see his underwear, so pull up the pants, no foul language either. They will respect you if you are strong enough to stick to your guns. This isn’t about fashion this is about respecting society amd others around you. I wouldn’t accept my daughter walking around with her pants down past her ****, nor will I my son.

We have become to intimidated to discipline our children and that my friends has got to stop!

Why does it have to be a picture of a black person sagging? Oh….. forgot. Disregard!
I think hanging your **** out of your pants like that violates my civil rights to not have to see your pimply **** hanging out. I had a teacher who said “If you can’t even wear your pants correctly then why do you even put them on?” Shortly after that is when people started wearing pajamas to school. FML. There is no compromise with people, its either you are screwed one way or another. I am going to buy an island and GTFO of this country. Some of the things that we are encountering as problems in our society are simply moral injustice that is brought on by incorrect upbringing of a child. I blame the parents. But who do the parents blame? TV. But TV gives disclaimers.
DISCLAIMER~~ If you do not like what I am saying, Do not read it. IF you have already read this then I am sorry and am not going to be held responsible for you getting butthurt over my opnion. Thank you!

Would seem to be a violation of the Constitution, however, this is a 9 and 10 problem. This is not a 1 problem. Therefore, the states and cities are empowered to write and enforce laws for those things they deem rude, crude or indecent behavior. The Constitution makes clear what the Federal government can’t do to you. Most of these restrictions are imposed upon the states, but the states are free to impose there own standards. A state might decide they want a state religion and there is no constitutional reason that prohibits this action. If a majority want the state religion to be Our Lady of Constant Confusion and Corndogs they could have it. As much as I don’t like the exposed underwear, I don’t think of it as a crime. You have the right to be a dumbass and look stupid..
