Kim Hye Sook Discusses Her Detention in North Korean Prison Camp Kim Hye Sook suffered unbearable pain and emotional suffering when she was detained for 28 years in a secretive North Korean concentration camp. Brutal executions, starvation — even mothers killing and eating their children to ensure their own survival — were regular occurrences.

Kim — who miraculously escaped from the Bukchang prison camp back in 2003 – granted CBN News with the first American television news interview to discuss these horrendous conditions. She now lives in South Korea, with the details of her escape remaining classified for security reasons. This summer, she released a memoir entitled, “A Concentration Camp Retold in Tears.”

When she was 13-year-old, her tragic tale began. The year was 1975 and in the blink of an eye the young girl was captured alongside her entire family. After years of suffering, she didn’t taste freedom until she was 41-years-old. Kim explains:

“My entire family went to prison. Some were taken to the mountains; others were put in different labor camps all because of my grandfather’s one mistake: he escaped to South Korea during the Korean War.”

Today, Kim wears dark glasses to ensure that her identity remains concealed. While she lost seven family members in the re-education camp, she currently has two sisters and a brother who are still imprisoned. She described a typical day at the camp:

“I attended indoctrination classes in the morning. In the afternoon the children were sent to push trolleys in the coal mines, often without any safety gear.

People were dying in the mines. There were numerous mine collapses, so many injuries, people who lost their legs, many who were buried alive. It was horrible.

I was treated like a slave and worse. I hardly slept. It was inhuman. But I never complained. I just followed all the rules. I had to find a way to survive.”

Kim claims that the conditions were so terrible that she thought about committing suicide “hundreds of thousands of times” during her 28-year detention. But because there was always someone watching her, this simply wasn’t an option:

“Each prisoner is assigned to watch four or five other prisoners. So if anything happens, the other prisoners would alert the guards because they didn’t want to get into trouble themselves.”

While her descriptions of executions are absolutely horrendous, nothing is more disturbing than her memories about those individuals who she saw kill their children in an effort to stave off hunger. In one instance, she recalls a mother boiling her 9-year-old daughter. In another fit of desperation, a woman killed her 16-year-old son, chopped him up and took him to a butcher to obtain some corn in exchange.

Kim admits that these details are difficult to share, but she bravely proclaims, “I want the world to see these images and to hear my testimony.” In describing the conditions in the isolated and volatile nation, she says, “I am living proof that there are no human rights in North Korea.” In September, she was invited to Washington, D.C., where she testified before a congressional panel about the conditions she faced.

This is a disgusting comment. To make fun of some of the worst suffering in the history of mankind degrades this site and its guests. I have a thick skin and a twisted sense of humor, but this is beyond anything i’ve read.

You’re not “bringing humor to something that is taboo”. Eating your children is not taboo, it’s horrific. Chopping them up to swap for corn is as evil as anything i’ve ever heard of.

Go back to your tent in the occupy wall street protests. Isn’t there a cop car out there that you should be taking a dump on? Check your watch, isn’t it about time for your next syring of heroin? Go borrow a needle and go big on this shot, what’s it gonna hurt?

Lord Jesus, we pray for mass miracles in this area and places like this throughout the world, Islamists beheading Christians and being proud of it. Lord I know your WORD says in John 11:25 “I AM the Resurrection and the Life, he who believes in ME shall live, even if he dies.” Lord, we know there is a better place with you in Eternity, but you commanded that we pray for one another. We pray for your mercy and compassion where it’s needed most. We pray for your Supernatural Intervention in these desperate situations and meet their needs, supernaturally strengthen them Lord and bring about deliverance and healing. I also pray for those who are lost and who are those who persecute the ones you love…..my prayer is that you would open the blind eyes and unblock the deaf ears and break the hard hearts……..convict them continually with a strong conviction and bring them to true repentance, this is my prayer I ask in Your Holy Name I pray.

As a country with influence – boy are we schizophrenic when it comes to things like this. We talk of Libya, Egypt… why is North Korea different? Oh, wait, Silly me. There is nothing to be won that would support any political figure’s agenda by taking a stand on North Korea.

To the Koreans out there, apologies are in order. Our government is corrupt. The American people don’t ignore these things even though the media and politicians do.

Hearing about mothers killing their own children to eat them to stay alive flys in the face of everything we are taught in this country about motherhood. I remember reading about mothers leaving their children to starve in Africa to save themselves. I would never kill my own children to save my life. I would rather die first. I guess to the Godless communists in North Korea nothing is sacred.

It is so sad that most of the foreign food aid sent to North Korea goes to Kim Jong Il’s army. We need to never feed his army again. I know the people will suffer, but no free country should aid and abet this dictator and his army. North Korea takes propaganda pictures of giving the people food, and after the pictures, takes the food back. That has been proven. McArthur should have been allowed to use atomic bombs during the Korean War, but our government was too concerned about world opinion. World Opinion shouldn’t have been a factor when so many Americans and South Koreans were dying. The World would have had the opinion after we dropped the bombs of never messing with the U. S. A.

Show me ONE Marxist Dictatorship that is not Brutal – They must rule with an Iron Fist – how else would anyone in that Country ever tolerate $1 for you, and the rest for me type of a Government.

Dictators use uninformed idiots to help them get into power and once in power – they go after the ones that can work, but won’t and lock them up or put them in mass graves – thus the name “Useful Idiots”.

I always love to hear atheists talk about how religion causes all wars. Like the stupid John Lennon song how beautiful the world would be without religion. Then the atheist communists come along and ruin their dream. Nobody, nobody can kill like Godless communists. China killed millions outright and through forced abortions. The Soviet Union killed millions. Cambodia killed millions. I am shocked to hear that people are mistreated in North Korea. I think of the stupid Godless atheists in this country. There is no morality without God you stupid atheists. Anything that is good for the state goes. There is only the all-powerful government. Stupid, stupid atheists.

I went of to war as a 16 year old kid, with the idea that we were preventing a communist take over of the South Korean goverment, we acomplished that objective, as far as I know there are no communists in the South Korean goverment to this day. But on the outher hand look at our goverment communists in ever direction you turn. What is happening in North Korea would have been the fait of the South Koreans if we had not helped them out, and now if we do not help our selves and prevent a communist take over we will follow in the footsteps of the North Korean people. IT HAPPEND IN RUSSIA IT HAPPEND IN CHINA “WAKE UP AMERICA”

  uh no,, with communism there is no liberty. god is a hypothesis. What useless god allows a people to end up eating their own children to survive? god=epic fail. god would do this to prove a point? Where was god for the holocaust? were the jews supposed to convince the bavarians to be jewish and not end up with a hitler? why didn’t god just make the bavarians jews? why not the north koreans? Obviously god did not bless the children who became their mothers dinner. What is a fact, however, is yes, the delusion of god as an extension of our intrinsic altruism(which wild animals like wolves also have) spurred what is american freedom… it took 5000 years to get there from the initial jewish concept to not sacrifice humans! A lot of suffering and death to get here followed. If that is gods means for people to get freedom, I am not his supporter.

  I can NOT describe to you the absolute hate incountered when stationed on the DMZ by the North Korean soldiers. The look in there eyes while watching us and there brutal actions we witnessed towards there own citizens are undescribeable. They are truly EVIL and quite frankly should be delt with before they act against South Korea, and the WILL, trust me.   We did just that, BUT THE rUSSIANS AND cOMMUNIST cHINESE FOUGHT ALONGSIDE THE nORTH, AND WE COULDN’T MUSTER THE COURAGE TO DROP the BOMB. So we were bamboozled into this Cease Fire, which they routinely ignore, and we keep asking rUSSIA and cHINA to help rein them in. Reality is they’re both helping them militarily and we’re going to realize someday the FOOLS we were played for!
  As for the caliphate, it’ll play it’s part along side venzuela, chili, russia, china and iran, when it comes time to take us on. (probably after the weakening of our military is complete!)

I’ve got a good idea for a stimulis plan for the airlines, we give them the cost of airfare for all of the OWS morons to be flown to the socialist country of their choice. They must however give up US citizenship forever and can never return. If they believe that socialism is utopia than give it to them. Think of all the money saved supporting their butts!

  I agree. OWS protestors have no idea what they want or if they want socializing which is borderline communism, let them leave. I like your idea – provide them a ticket. I bet NOT ONE of them will accept the invitation. Not one of them has the courage to stand up for what they think their fighting for. Distribute them to Finland, where people pay 65%+ taxes and see how much they like that.   JZS- Those country are pleasant, but they are not free to chose their own jobs. They have a fraction of the population we have. Freedom sure does suck doesn’t it? I guess you should get out of the country and go to one more to your liking, Cuba would probably accept you, north Korea for sure. They will keep your place warm.   You are correct that Finland is not a socialist country. That means that neither President Obama nor any other Democrat who advocates policies that even if implemented would make us no more socialist than Finland is a socialist. However, the right has been loudly calling them socialists for years, in an attempt to scare people who will think of North Korea when they hear the word socialism, instead of thinking of less scary places like Canada and France that practice what the conservatives like to call socialism when we try to get it here.

I blame Harry S. Truman for the long-standing and on-going suffering of the innocent victims in North Korea. If he would’ve only allowed Douglas MacArthur do what needed to be done, there would be no horrors stories to tell such as these.

Harry, I hope your soul is rotting in Hell.

  You are so right. When we are not allowed to fight to actually WIN, whenever we withdraw, the hell is darker than when we went in the first place…it’s like the parable Jesus told, the house where the demons were cleared out, but because the job wasn’t done, because it wasn’t filled with God after that, even more demons came back than before…THAT is the story of N.   and in Viet Nam, and soon so too Iraq & Afghanistan. You can’t fight a “nice” war. Had the same “tactics” been around in WWII we would all be speaking German or Japanese now

  While I agree with your assessment of the Truman debacle I disagree with you on one major point. When you boil your 9-year daughter to stave off hunger – kill, chop up and trade the remains of your 16-year old son for corn then you cease to become innocent victims and are instead an even greater monster than those that imprison you.

This is a perfect example of what society looks like in a socialist, marxist, communist run economy/ government. This is what so many OWS drones want but dont realize it when they say the govt should do X and Y. This is the end result.
