Cabo Tourists Take Cover in Mall During Gunfight

(AP)Hundreds of people cowered for about two hours inside a shopping mall in the resort town of Cabo San Lucas Saturday while security forces traded sporadic gunfire with armed men in the parking lot and then searched stores for suspects.

No one was injured in the gunbattle, but some cars and entrance doors to the shopping center were damaged, authorities said.

Police said they arrested two men who were also suspected of being involved in an overnight attack near the mall that killed a Mexican marine.

Authorities said the shooting at the Plaza Sendero shopping center erupted when marines and police found armed men in the parking lot about 1 p.m. Police ordered shoppers and employees to stay inside during the battle and the later search of the mall.

The military said army troops arrived to help secure the area and caught one suspect, who was turned over to city officials. The soldiers also provided security for the shoppers and employees inside the mall, who were allowed to leave around 3 p.m.

Jeeez! What next? I mean, you take a vacation to Cabo and then you get a free ride home with an extra half pound of lead injected? I’ve heard of going on shooting trips but this is not what I had in mind.

  I warned my hairdresser .. she was going down to Mexico last month for a vacation .. she hadn’t even heard about Fast and Furious or any of the violence , watches MSM … why anyone would go to a third world country for a “vacation” is beyond me.

We go to Cabo twice a year; just returned from there last week. The area you are watching is not a tourist area. We feel totally safe in Cabo and have never seen anything at all that seemed suspect. The resorts are gated with security and the Mexican people are among the best on earth.
It’s always a joy to see these people so happy in their work and so dedicated. Cabo is not a likely or practical place for drug wars.

Well…The last bastion of Mexican Vacation spots that was untouched by violence for the most part is now gone….Looks like the waterfront property I wanted there will now become a lot cheaper…..Oh but Mr. President we clearly dont have a problem with Mexico….

  I am a non-native and own property in nearby San Jose del Cabo. As a non-native you can own ocean-front property. You do this trough a Fideicomiso. Fideicomiso is a 50-year perpetually renewable and transferable Bank Trust through which Foreigners acquire irrevocable and absolute ownership rights to property in Mexico.This Trust is a legal substitute for deeded (fee simple) ownership and is provided specifically for non-nationals to own property in the formerly restricted zones (border and beach areas.) The Trust system of ownership is sanctioned by the Mexican government, provided for under the Mexican Constitution, and secured by the Central Bank of Mexico.

  I have an informant that said the cops do have guns, but the firing pins have been removed. Just in case someone was to get a pin, the barrels have welds so that no gang or cartel members could possibly be harmed.
  Just received a call from my informant that police were to only show a presense, and if they attempted to restrain a bandito, that they would automatically get two years in solitary.
  Oh, I’m sorry. My informant thought I was asking if US border agents had weapons. I don’t have an answer about Mexican police.
