CMA Awards Open By Taking Shot at Hank Williams Jr. Controversy

Country Music Association Awards 2011 Opening: Hank Williams, Carrie Underwood, Brad Paisley

On his GBTV program Wednesday night, Glenn Beck promised viewers that there would be something worth tuning in for during the 45th annual Country Music Association Awards on ABC. So when the show opened with a bit about the Hank Williams Jr. controversy, I know my jaw hit the floor.

After hosts Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood took the stage, Paisley used his guitar to start playing a song to the tune of Williams’s iconic “Monday Night Football” theme that is no more. Underwood stopped him, saying that he couldn’t sing the song because of what happened with Williams (he was fired for making an analogy that involved Hitler and Obama). Paisley quickly, then, changed the song to a version of Williams’s classic “Family Tradition,” which includes the line “why do you drink?” Underwood added the line “before an interview.”

But as the audience chuckled during the obviously light-hearted bit, Williams himself made an appearance behind the hosts. That led Paisley to go back to the original-themed song, with Williams and Underwood joining in.

You can watch it all unfold below:

Rowdy, indeed. And adding to the intrigue: ESPN, which fired Williams and which the opening was obviously skewering, and ABC, which aired the awards, are both owned by the same parent company, Disney.

By the way, you can watch Williams’s sit-down with Glenn — and his live performance — below:

Remember guys way before Glenn left – that Saudi prince owned 30% of Fox – now how much truth do you think you are going to get from them? I mainly go to their website now to argue with the liberal trolls, because it is so much fun, and to get the newest Hollywood gossip – I don’t get any news there that I don’t get via Drudge, the Blaze, and twitter. :)

I NEVER, EVER liked ESPN, I used to call them the TOM BRADY channel now I call them the TIM TEBOW channel, so much for comprehensive sports coverage, they sound like a broken record. They have only 4 or 5 teams that they cover over and over like The Eagles, Dallas and Green Bay.Talk about beating a dead horse, You may say that Green Bay was the Super Bowl Champs but when New Orleans won the S.B. they rarely spoke of them, shoot after that game they started covering Table Tennis and such, just to avoid football all together…lol. I have deleted ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNU from my channel scan list.

Love Hank Jr. and that whole mess was just a way to distract and try to make American Conservatives look like racist red necks again. Hank didn’t say what they said he did and he was definitely railroaded. I will support Hank Williams Jr like I always have and now will download his new album and song Keep The Change as soon as possible. Love that he means what he says and what you see is what you get. I think Disney is trying to smooth things over with Hank because he is out there making a WHOLE lot of $$$ with his new song and they’re not getting a cut for it. Not to mention wanting to smooth things over with Hank’s fans. Ain’t gonna help though. We tend to be a loyal bunch and y’all screwed up. Just sayin.

At this point in time, America looks just like the 1960′s and early 1970′s. Sit-ins, vandalism, violence, hatred of capitalism, attempts to topple the government and war. Yes, now is just like the 60′s. I know because I graduated from high school in 1966 and college in 1970. I saw this stuff up close and personal.

A lot of us older folks, remember very well and we are seeing the same thing. Many of us fought in a war that divided “them” from “us”. We are upset that it is happening again in our life time because we know what is going to happen.

I love Carrie, but that dress was ridiculous, and borderline indecent. It looked like she was wearing a large napkin or handkerchief. And those shoes? Why do women’s fashions tend toward the bizaare and hideous when they aren’t simply obscene?

I remember Danny Kaye doing a song as a fashion designer who answered the question of why his designs looked the way they did. His answere, “I hate women”. Succinct and true, I believe. Too many homosexuals and misogynists telling women what they should look like until women start to believe it themselves. I’m sad to see Carrie falling for that nonsense.

I appreciate a fine looking woman as much as any man, and she is mighty fine. But there is a thing called class, and I’m the old fashioned male chauvanist that likes to see pretty ladies dressed in nice clothes.

Besides, after staring at her gorgeous legs long enough her ridiculous shoes became noticeable.

Tim and willie? Who cares? Willie should be down at ows doing free shows and tim- well tim wishes obama would invite him to sing at his next b-day party. Dont like either of their music anyway.

      But Hank rocks-always has,always will.

Country Music is a “family” and it would serve Tim well to forget where he came from and where he currently lives and conducts business

Slaptheleft, McGraw, Hill & Willie are all lefties. I thought it was funny that they were not amused!
You’re right, Willie would fit right in at ows.
And I’m not a fan of their music either. Faith’s football intro is embarrassingly idiotic.

Love country music and Hank Williams Jr., he tells it like it is. And if that is a Halloween costume that Carrie Underwood is wearing, I’ll take whatever treats she has to offer.

She’s beautiful, but I deplore the trend for women to dress like clowns at best, and at worst like whores, thinking it is fashionable.

    That was great
I just don’t understand how all these actors and political analist would
compare Pres. Bush or other Rep. And the Tea Party in the past calling them
    Nazi’s and nobody even care
    Incredible
But when Hank or anyone speak of Obama he gets ripped to shreds

Hank didn’t even call Obama Hitler! It was an analogy of just how absurd it was for those men to pretend that they were happy campers ready to sit down and strike some huge deal.

It seems Hank Williams ,Jr. Was the only country performer there. Carrie Underwood and her late Halloween costume, plus other almost dresses, made the entire program appear a sad comedy. How can these people call what they do COUNTRY? Where were the older generation singers and performers? Oh, that’s right…they are old now and do not count.
