‘This is SCARY’: Would You Soar Through Pine Trees on a Roller Coaster With No Brakes?

Sometimes the simpler something is the scarier it can be, like old time horror flicks that didn’t have all the gore. This roller coaster plays off that concept.

It’s pretty simple: single pipe, single person, single giant sloping, winding hill. But throw hundreds of pine trees whizzing past you on tight bank curves and it gets a bit scarier. Oh, and try not to clutch the brake — that’s right no brake. Then you’re bound to let out a few “whoas” like this guy did:

As the Huffington Post writes, it’s not the tallest or fastest or but “this Austrian downhill coaster is nevertheless terrifying.” The coaster located Mieders, Austria, starts at the top of a mountain, reachable by a cable car.

The thrill seeker who gives us a first person account in this video writes in the YouTube description that he had ridden the coaster using the brake “only a little bit” the first time, but next time wanted to challenge his will to not use the brake, providing us with the jaw dropping, high-speed, brakeless journey down the mountain. He describes the vessel in which you ride as simply “small car with a brake lever”. His advice about the coaster? “This is SCARY! Enjoy the ride!”

  So many thoughts come to mind:
  
  1. Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
  
  2. I hope he was strapped to that skateboard.
  
  3. For socialist countries, the Europeans pretty much let you do whatever you want for entertainment.
  
  4. If there’s a crash, only one guy dies.
  
  5. The overpasses and ski lift poles should have targets on them.

  It looks fun! But Blaze, the headline seems a bit off. Watching the video, the thing needs gravity to help it along and any brakeage along the course would get the rider stuck. So it’s no surprise it doesn’t need brakes. But it looks awesome!

  Yes, very much so (red deer). Do you think Europe is barren of wildlife? Or do you think that deer hunting (stag hunting) stops at the Austria/Germany border? Look at a bottle of Jagermeister sometime, or at numerous steins that have hunting themes, they’re not referencing north America with those. Deer all over the place over there. Deer itself is a germanic word, used to be “deor”, which was the generic term for “animal” amongst the Teutonic (German/Dutch/etc)/Theodesic (anglo saxon) people.

  Yeah, there’s deer in Austria and all throught Europe. They aren’t as large as American deer (about 1/2 the size, or smaller). An American deer is like a Ero elk, a lot of difference. But, from a motorcylist’s point of veiw, still hurts like hell when you hit one!!

Looks a bit dangerous in that I don’t see much body and back support if the guy behind you doesn’t slow down when you apply brakes and runs into the back of you. Also, what is to prevent you from hanging your legs out and hitting them on something or reaching down with your hands underneath? There must be some sort of automatic braking system to keep you from really building up speed, especially if you are a heavy weight……..

  Hey, it is natural selection. Why should safety features be applied where sheer rational thinking should be predominate. You keep your legs on the seat…. Keep all arms, hands and heads in the vehicle at all times. The tell you this because society here in America has gotten so protective of the weak. No wonder our Gene Pool created the Occupy Movement. With a life time of overprotective parents, government, and society; we have developed people who are dependent on others on how to live, eat, think and breathe.

  Where is the safety police when you want them to rule over someone else.

  Yes. If there’s snow on the ground in Austria it’s definately skis or a snowboard you want. I’ve been snowboarding at Bad Hofgastein and it’s absolutely amazing! Ridiculous winter wonderland there! I’ve been looking for a reason to visit Austria again and I think this little coaster might be my excuse to return.

  They have something similar up by Mt. Rushmore in Keystone, SD. It’s called the President’s Alpine Slide. Instead of a rail, your in a wheeled sled similar to something one might use for a street luge going down what looks like a concrete water slide.

The headline is also misleading in that it makes you think there are NO brakes on the thing. It’s just that the rider chose not to use them.

That just looks like an item for the bucket list for sure!

Just imagine how much fun ceramic bearings, carbon fiber cart with a Recaro racing bucket and a six point safety harness would bring to this ride!

Watch and listen, the second vehicle is piston engine driven and you can hear the brakes squeal when they are being applied and had it not brakes they surely wouldn’t have been able to slow and stop at the end.

I expected the coaster to go between *tight* trees. Disappointed.

Search YouTube for “enduro helmet cam” for motorcycles racing between trees often so close as to be narrower than the handlebars.

  I’ve not only BEEN to Cedar Point, I worked there one summer!! They used us as weights for the Genesis roller coaster to test it before the season started. We rode that coaster for TWO DAYS (not including breaks – not brakes – and nights). It was great the first 20 times in a row, but after that it just got boring. Testing the Corkscrew was terrible – all the banging of your head against the headrest gave me a migraine. But, during off-times, we had major fun playing quarters and drinking ‘low’ beer!!

  There is no Genesis coaster in Cedar Point. There is, however, a Gemini. The twin coaster where two trains go simultaneously and get so close at a couple points you can reach out and touch the hand of the person in another car.
