It was just last week that GOP presidential candidate Michele Bachmann was confronted by a high schooler about her stance on gay marriage. But if you thought that was interesting, just wait until you hear what happened at a book signing in South Carolina this weekend: a mother brought her 8-year-old to the event and encouraged him to confront Bachmann about his “mommy.”
“My mommy — Miss Bachmann, my mommy’s gay but she doesn’t need fixing,” the young boy, identified only as Elijah, said to Bachmann.
HuffPo reports that “a dumbfounded Bachmann then shot the boy’s mother an icy look before the pair walked away.” But there could be another explanation. In video provided of the encounter, the boy is barely audible, and has to be repeatedly coaxed to confront the candidate. It could be that she just didn’t hear the boy.
See for yourself:
According to the video’s YouTube description, it was taken by the boy’s mother, who gushes with pride:
Video of Michele Bachmann trying to get her photo op in with my 8 year old son. It’s hard to hear but he leans in and tells her that his mom is gay and she doesn’t need fixing. GO ELIJAH! Love that look of shock she gets.
We were there for an Occupy Myrtle Beach event to mic check Michele Bachmann on another issue. The lgbt issue came up separately. #Occupymb
The video, however, does bring up a controversial question: is it okay to use your children to try and garner support for a political message?
What do you think? Is this over-the-top and out of line, or just an example of a mother teaching her son to be active in political activism at a young age?
