Earlier today, we brought you the 2006 memo in which Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich voiced his approval of the health care legislation Mitt Romney passed as governor of Massachusetts. Now a video from just three years ago has resurfaced of Gingrich touting the need for an individual health insurance mandate for all Americans.
“The third thing I think you have to do, which is for a conservative a little controversial, is I think you’ve got to require everybody to either have insurance or to post a bond,” Gingrich said in 2008 speaking at the Alegent Health Clinic in Nebraska. Read Alegent’s press release from Gingrich’s 2008 visit here.
The former Speaker went on to explain that it is “immoral” for someone to gamble with their health care.
Gingrich expressed similar views just this year. “I agree that all of us have a responsibility to pay–help pay for health care. And, and I think that there are ways to do it that make most libertarians relatively happy. I’ve said consistently we ought to have some requirement that you either have health insurance or you post a bond,” he said on “Meet the Press” in May.
