A Miami family had a surprise, and unwelcomed, Christmas visitor: a 13-foot Burmese python in their swimming pool, according to news reports from South Florida.

Suladie Miranda found the snake “curled up in the corner of the pool” and called 911, WSVN-TV reports.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue’s “venom response” team responded. (Note: Pythons are not venomous.) It took three tries to nab the slithering intruder, which slipped away and went for a swim before being captured.

  EXACTLY……… a shotgun solves the problem. If this were my pool i wouldn’t need to call animal control. This will be the norm someday in South Florida. Once there is no more food in the Glades, they will then move to where there is food. This is going to be an ecological disaster if something isn’t done soon. Make it profitable to kill these things. Say a $1000 per, and then stand back and let the free market solve the problem.

First why do they have to man handle these animals to catch them, Wild Kingdom always used a stick with a hoop on the end, second making sushi out of these creatures is a great idea, that beast must weigh nearly a hundred pounds. Is it humane to have to grab these things using bar hands? Just shoot the thing!

  I could care less if shooting them is more humane or not. It is safer. Even thought these snakes are not venomous, they can give a really nasty bite. Shoot em, skin em, and eat em. You get a free bbq for you and your friends and a new set of boots not to mention a belt.

You are going to see a lot of these encounters in So FL from now on. The mega snakes are multiplying like crazy. If one gets in your pool, stay away from it and call the ACO pronto! If it is in your yard, 12 ga time. These things consider your children as food. If you see a big one around, there are eggs somewhere that will hatch out more. Solution………… move North. The only way to get rid of them now is to start killing them 24/7/12.

  Have seen her on tv a couple of times. Why she thought she could handle a snake that big I do not know. I have seen her with 8 footers but that thing was way too big. She is very lucky it did not bite or drown her. Dumb,dumb,dumb. I bet she would not have done it if a camera was not recording.

  JNOBFAN, I noticed that around 20seconds into the video after the snake got back into the water, it whipped around and came very close to biting her. She was quick to let the tail go. Agreed … too big a snake for any one person to try to capture (providing capturing is necessary).

I think that perhaps a 12 gauge shotgun would not be the best tool in this situation. Bad for the snake, but worse for your pool liner.

Haven’t they ever heard of a 12 ga shotgun? BANG! End of problem. I guess they worry about the wrath of the PITA freaks. If I find one of these snakes, it will be DRT (dead, right there). Most of the time, like with alligators, they take them away and kill them somewhere else anyway.

Florida is one tropical jungle and after Hurricane Andrew released all these animals into the wild, this type of stuff is pretty “normal” there now.

  You are correct, We also had 2-3 ft iguanas all over the place, but the hard freezes we had the past two years seemed to kill most of them…we were hoping most of the pythons froze too…my husband and used to take our 3 kids fishing out in the glades…not anymore!

  That “Andrew Hurricane Story” is a big crock of crap that people try to use to explain the explosion of snakes in the glades. — What do you think actually happens to all those snakes owned by individuals when they get to big to handle? To big for their enclosures? Or eat the family pets?
  
  The owners release them in the wild or they escape.. Ask anyone you know down here “what ever happened to that snake you had” The answer always is, “I gave it away” Yeah,, to WHO? Who takes all those over-sized snakes? NO ONE!
  
  The 10 footer found 2 blocks from my house escaped and the owner didn’t bother looking for it or warn the neighbors!!

  Actually that is most likely an anchor baby. They grow fast if they have a good food supply. The two Burmese Pythons I had grew to 10 feet in about 18 to 20 months.
