2012 Republican Hopefuls Court Religious Right

WASHINGTON (AP) — A gathering of religious conservatives drew nearly all the GOP presidential hopefuls to a single stage, a claim that a South Carolina debate and a well-publicized forum in New Hampshire couldn’t make about their recent events.

The Faith and Freedom Coalition’s two-day conference proved that the religious right still plays a major role in the nominating process, even if it‘s less organized than during the Christian Coalition’s heyday and economic issues are dominating the early campaign.

The gathering was a tryout for candidates hoping to fill a void left by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee. The Southern Baptist minister won the 2008 Iowa caucus but is not running this time.

Most of the candidates spent more time on money issues than on spiritual matters on the opening day of the conference Friday. But they generally portrayed the federal debt and health care policies as moral concerns.

They also paid tribute to religious conservatives who often place abortion, gay marriage and other social issues ahead of questions such as taxes and spending.

Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman bypassed a large scrum of journalists but did give an interview to the Christian-oriented CBN network.

“I do not believe the Republican Party should focus solely on our economic life to the neglect of our human life,” Huntsman told the conference audience of several hundred after citing numerous anti-abortion laws he signed as governor.

Huntsman and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney are Mormons, a group eyed suspiciously by some Christian conservatives. They did not directly mention Mormonism in their remarks.

The Republican contenders who seem to be making the most direct appeals to evangelical voters are former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who declined an invitation to the conference.

Pawlenty, a Catholic-turned-Protestant evangelical, opened and closed his remarks with biblical quotes. His said his top four “commonsense principles” for the nation are to turn toward God, protect the unborn, support traditional marriage and keep Americans secure.

Bachmann, inching toward a presidential bid, reminded the audience that she home-schooled her five children and served as foster mother to 23 others. She said “marriage is under siege” in America and she ended with a prayer that asked a blessing for President Barack Obama, whom she had sharply criticized moments earlier.

Romney, seen as the Republicans’ early front-runner, may have the toughest task in wooing religious conservatives. As a Senate candidate and one-term governor in Massachusetts, he supported legalized abortion, gay rights and gun control.

Romney has reversed his stands on those positions. Since speakers didn’t take audience questions at the event, he had an easier time than he will in other settings.

He cited “our belief in the sanctity of human life,“ and said marriage should apply to ”one man and one woman.” Romney blamed Obama for the nation’s high unemployment. Job losses can push marriages to the breaking point, he said, calling it “a moral crisis.”

Rep. Ron Paul of Texas mixed quotes from the Bible’s first book of Samuel with his familiar libertarian proposals, such as returning to the gold standard.

All these lines got applause. Still, a sense of unease sometimes hung over the event. Organizers acknowledged that some religious conservatives are not happy with the heavy emphasis on economic matters these days.

The audience members sat silently when Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour urged them to embrace the eventual nominee despite the certainty that they will disagree with him or her on some issues.

“Purity is the enemy of victory,” said Barbour, who has decided against his own presidential bid.

With all due respect, it doesn’t take a lot of guts to state the obvious. While I like Ron Paul’s ideas, I also know he is underfunded, and you KNOW that damned Obama has a big pile of special interest (and probably foreign) bucks for his campaign, already. He’s probably getting BILLIONS from that old snake Soros. I would not want to back Paul, only to see him fade in the stretch when the media starts ignoring him to death. They can make him appear a non-viable candidate and “ignore” him right out of the race–they have done it many times before to good candidates who would have been better than the choice we were given when the dust settled. That is what happened in 2008–there were lots of good candidates at the beginning of the race–and everyone of them got marginalized and/or ignored to death by the MSM, until the last man standing was John McCain-. NOBODY was wildly enthused about him. Many were so disgusted they did not vote at all–but the Dems sure did–pouring in from every city and cemetery in America. We simply can’t afford to let that happen again, or take a chance that OBummer wins again, or we and our country are SCREWED. Again, and probably for the final time.

So what’s the big deal. The progressives court the ******* that hate America everyday and go so far as to defend their every radical, dispicable moves. At least with Christians, you don’t have to worry about them strapping on bombs and blowing people to smithereens in the name of their religion. Liberals can’t stand the so called religious right, because they see themselves a gods and believing in GOD interferes with their over inflated self esteem.

The Republicans don’t have a chance to beat Obama if they ignore the Hispanic voters. There is now a movement starting to mobilize Latin voters starting in Tucson, Arizona. The Republican’s best chance is to put forth a ticket with Herman Cain and Marco Rubio. The Republicans need to get busy and put an immigration package together that allows illegal aliens a path to citizenship. Issue green cards and put them at the back of the line behind legal entrants giving them hope. They should pay taxes, get jobs, get sponsors, be crime-free (except for that illegal entry thing) and whatever is already required for citizenship. We already have a path to citizenship. We could start pushing the Mexican government to combine with the U.S. to become one with us. Then people wouldn’t need to come here. Okay, maybe I’m dreaming, but you have to start somewhere.

Romney’s earlier positions of being pro-abortion, pro-gay, and pro gun control are ALL contrary to the positions of his own faith. I know because I’m a member. That‘s why I don’t support him, and why I don’t care for Huntsman either. When Hunstman was Utah’s governor, he was a RINO is a staunchly conservative state. Most Mormons are solid conservatives BECAUSE of their faith, not in spite of it! Huntsman was solidly to the left of most people in a state that was solidly conservative! He was out of sync then, and continues to be today.

I won’t vote for Gingrich, either. He can’t be trusted.

I would much rather see Bachmann or Cain win the nomination. But then, I’m a conservative, NOT a Republican. BIG difference!

While I don’t agree with your choice of candidates :), you are RIGHT ON with the rest. The media and a lot of other people are simply buying this idea that Conservative = Automatic Republican Vote, when nothing could be further from the truth! Republicans have not represented “conservative” values for a long time, regardless of what they say. They have simply bought into the Big Government lie and jumped on the gravy train to sop up all the gravy they can before they run out of biscuits.

Republicans should not assume they have a “lock” on Conservative votes. If they cannot give us a candidate that we can actually vote FOR, instead of a tired old rerun like Romney (remember he did not win the LAST time he ran, either), then they do not deserve our votes.

Wait a minute–when did Obama nationalize healthcare Romney? I don’t recall that EVER happening. There isn’t even a public option in the plan–just a mandate, some rules, and requirements that try to make the private market more competitive. If he’s referring to the mandate, then that means the government has also nationalized all of the cars in America by requiring them to have seat belts which must be worn and requiring the drivers to have insurance.

I love how Romney pretends that people in the audience voted for Obama–no one in that audience voted for Obama in the first place; they all voted for the grumpy old dude. They never liked him from the beginning. And if you evaluate Obama from a Leftist perspective, the only disappointment is that he hasn’t really done anything all that radical, despite rhetoric to the contrary (no duh the conservatives are going to call him a socialist and a radical–it’s what they do every election cycle to every Democrat, going back as far as I can remember). He’s instituted a handful of timid reforms that the conservatives, rightly so, point out haven‘t done enough to fix America’s problems. Very amusing.

Yeah, see, we held our nose and voted for the “Old Dude”, even though we did not like HIM, either–because he was the only choice we had, given the alternative. I don’t recall anybody accusing any other Democratic President of being a Communist traitor. NONE of them ever shredded the Constitution the way Obama does daily, or seemed so hellbent on dismantling our economy and selling us down the river to the Communists, Muslims, or whatever nut-job group he could sell us out to, just as long as he got the job done of destroying America. The man has made no secret of his hatred for this country, and he is one of the biggest racists, race-baiters and race-dividers I have ever seen, black or white!

I might not have liked most of the other Democratic presidents that much, but I never thought any of them were traitors to their country or out to destroy it–except for Obama. And you complain he is not “radical” enough? What would be radical enough in the White House for you? Lenin? Mao? Ghadaffi? Of course the REALLY scary thing is Obama is obviously a puppet, because he is not smart enough to conceive or execute the plan he is following.. And please don’t waste your breath telling me how “brilliant” he is I know bullsheet when I smell it, thanks. My eyes, ears and brain tell me otherwise. That is ANOTHER distinction between him and past Dem POTUS–I never felt any of THEM were puppets, or so stupid they could not speak coherently without a teleprompter.

As for Bush, he probably made that mistake himself, and even if he didn’t, do you know what a far worse mistake is? Starting a war on false pretenses (I’m referring to Iraq for those that are slow; Afghanistan was fine–we actually killed Osama bin Laden very close to there, pretty much exactly where we thought he would be)–oops, that only cost a boatload of money and more of our citizens’ blood.

What about all the subsidies bussinesses get in the form of tax write-offs that allow owners to deduct large portions of their personal incomes and expenses as a “business expense” and in doing so contribute far more to our deficit than any entitlement program a Democrat has ever suggested. Do you realize that one week of Bush tax cuts, a measly 3%, costs more than the entirety of the amount Republicans want to cut from the food stamps programs, ANNUAL budget?

Listen, more African Americans (not all of course) have voted democrat for a long time, and to be honest even if Cain was the conservative runner, they probably wouldn’t vote for him either.

Why? People of a democrat standing often believe the government should assist them (unconstitutionally of course), so, their choice between Obama and Cain would be obvious.

Instead of putting so much effort into something as arbitrary as race, try utilizing it for voting on principle.

Agreed. Who says we have to vote “Republican”, anyhow? The Republicans are not a whole lot better than the Democrats. BOTH these parties have lost the right to expect support from the American people by their own actions. Besides, it is the Republicans’ habit of nominating a tired old RERUN candidate (see John McCain, Mitt Romney, et al) that gave us OBUMMER as POTUS. People were so SICK of being given no choice at all, and nobody they could vote FOR, instead of just voting for the “lesser of two evils” that a lot did not vote at all–and the result was this America-hating Communist A$$ hole in the White House.

Republicans should not assume they have the automatic support of Conservatives. They assuredly do NOT, if Mitt Romney is the best they can do! And yet, Conservatives simply cannot afford to split their votes in 2012, thereby handing the election to Obummer again. So it’s a real problem, and we need a REAL candidate to address it. Allen West is that candidate. West for POTUS in 2012! I don’t care WHAT party puts him on the ballot, as long as he is there. I would vote for him in a heartbeat!

Yes, it does bother me that he voted for the Patriot act, though I think being an ex-military man may have had something to do with that. I like how your argument worked for like five seconds, and then you noticed Trump, which derails your entire argument.

Your right, no “rational man” who desires a police state, or a welfare state, wants Ron Paul as a president, I think it is ironic due to your comment that your joined their rank.

      Money-money-money-mooooneeeeyyyyy MOOONEEEEEEEYYYYY!!

      Donald’s a little long-winded.

      He’d be more than a little “less-than-polished” politician/diplomatically-wise….

      …. but!, WHO CARES?!!

Let’s get our financial house in order and REGULATE our relationships around the world.

We need someone who’ll do some bullying in the opposite direction, toward the bad guys.

… not toward “We, the American People.”

Obama…………… YOU’RE FIRED!!!!! And then some!!

I don’t see one name there which I would trust to properly handle todays sticky foriegn relations problems, the “football”, the economy and my constitutional rights….and NO, the constant remark I hear about them having “more experience than Obama has” does not now and never will sway me. That is like saying it would be appropriate for the lazy parents who gave their car keys to their 6 year old to drive them to dinner and who then crashed the car, to now hand the keys to their “more experienced” 9 year old daughter to drive them home.

And what the heck is a “scrum” anyway?

The Religious NeoCons treat Ron Paul
as the Anti Christ, he may stop the murder
and their Holy War against their Arab Brothers

You have heard that it was said, “Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.”
But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you (Matthew 5:43-44).

Religion might be nice but it’s not doing us any favors in the middle east. It’s going to take a lot more then praying to god in order to defeat Obama. Rommey isn’t the answer, we should write Obama’s reelection ticket automatically if he wins the nomination.

While I understand and appreciate the meaning of “RINO”, let’s be honest here: Romney and his ilk are Republicans. The problem is not that he’s a Republican in name only, the problem is that the Republican Party is no longer (if it ever was) a conservative party.

Political parties have come and gone in American politics. It’s time for the Republican Party to go the way of the Whigs and the No-Nothings, and for a new, truly conservative party to form.

I don’t think the issue with Ron Paul are his ideas.
@RationalContender said, “no rational person is considering Paul as a real contender in the race”
He did not say Ron Paul was irrational he is just pointing out he won’t be a viable CANDIDATE because of his appearance and demeanor. People want someone that “looks presidential” – yes, we should NOT vote that way, but it is a fact, none-the-less.
Ron Paul is correct on almost every issue.
He tosses his constitutional ideals aside when it comes to legislating morality, though!

We need a CONSITUTIONALLY BOUND government. PERIOD.

If you want to legislate morality, every single state has the constitutional right to do so.

      The federal government DOES NOT.

HOW are we supposed to UNITE on so many ideals when we embrace diversity? So long as the federal government keeps overreaching the Consititution and legislating morality, there will always be a huge divide among us. This is NOT in the pervue or jurisdiction of the federal goverenment.

I won’t force MY moral code on you, and you don’t force YOURS on me!

It’s this great new invention – I like to call it FREEDOM or LIBERTY.

      @SWAMPBUCK

You are terribly uninformed, and I will leave it at that.

      @TOMFERRARI

If you vote on principle, and work to get the message out, your doing the best you can do.

I will agree with you that politics looks more like American Idol during election time, but this logic does not justify not attempting to change the way people think.

I will constantly fight the battle for ideas, because I actually care about America and Liberty, all of the others who think our election is a popularity contest, you will be the reason why America crumbles.

@ Randy, who posted Romney, seen as the Republicans’ early front-runner, may have the toughest task in wooing religious conservatives. As a Senate candidate and one-term governor in Massachusetts, he supported legalized abortion, gay rights and gun control.”

This country is DOOMED if Conservatives fall to fighting amongst themselves about side issues and split their vote amongst different candidates based upon single- or narrow-issue lines. The POTUS and his crowd are DEPENDING upon us to do just that and allow them to run off with the White House again. We MUST not allow that to happen, if we want to save our country!

Forget these RINOS. Allen West for POTUS in 2012 – he is the right candidate with the right ideas, a genuine love for his country (what a change from the current POTUS!) and he also happens to be black. He is the ONE candidate who can unquestionably beat Obama and give us a president we can actually SUPPORT.

Whoever ends up being the candidate, we must get behind him/her and VOTE AS A BLOC, if we are to avoid the reelection of OBummer and stop the destruction of our country.

      Libertariansunite,
Thanks for the link and you are so right about how Fox News and the Blaze ignore Ron Paul and thereby convince people that he is not a serious contender. It’s amazing how so many on the Blaze hang on every word Glenn Beck says and yet Glenn himself is a bit hypocritical when he so passionately promotes the Founding Fathers and the Constitution and even considers himself a Libertarian and yet he completely ignores the only candidate who is consistently in line with the Constitution and the Founding Fathers and Libertarian principles. Glenn is much more friendly to potential candidates like Michele Bachmann and Allen West, who both voted for the un-Constitutional Patriot Act and favor a foreign policy that is contradictory to the Constitution and the foreign policy of the Founders.
Being led by the nose by demagogues is not “rational”. What is rational is understanding the problems facing America and finding (by your own research) the true positions of the candidates that believe they can help fix the problems and supporting the one with the best solutions. Anyone who has taken those steps would surely support Ron Paul because he is not only the most moral, honest, and consistent character in politics but he is also right on every issue.
