2012 Troubles Ahead for Obama in Prized Florida?

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — President Barack Obama has problems in Florida that he didn’t have when he won the prized state in 2008.

The state’s economy is worse than elsewhere. Foreclosures are high. Property values are low. As president, Obama could be blamed.

Voters’ shifting attitudes show the degree to which the atmosphere has changed since his first campaign. Florida Democrats made gains in 2008 with Obama on the top of the ticket, but the GOP won big two years later.

All that explains why Florida Democrats are redoubling their efforts to re-energize the rank and file, including at the state party’s Jefferson-Jackson dinner Saturday night.

And it‘s why Obama’s campaign team has been on the ground training volunteers 17 months before the election and why the president has been such a frequent visitor to the Sunshine State.

Over the past 10 months, he has played mini-golf and hit the waves in Panama City Beach, eaten a corned beef sandwich at a Miami Beach deli, visited Cape Canaveral, addressed community college graduates in Miami and headlined fundraisers for Florida politicians.

He’s set to return in the coming week for three fundraisers.

Florida offers 29 electoral votes, more than 10 percent of the 270 he needs to win a second term.

“The president can win the White House re-election without Florida, but it’s certainly easier if he does win Florida,” said Steve Schale, Obama’s Florida director in 2008.

Florida’s unemployment rate was 10.8 percent in April, or nearly 2 percentage points higher than the national average. The state has been hit harder by foreclosures and loss in property values than most of the country.

After Florida Democrats made gains in 2008, voters went quickly in the opposite direction in 2010. Republicans won the governorship, a U.S. Senate seat and three other statewide offices, plus huge majorities in the Legislature.

Obama’s job performance rating in Florida has hovered between 44 percent and 47 percent, except for a slight increase to 51 percent in a Quinnipiac University poll after Osama bin Laden’s death.

The sluggish economic recovery is to blame.

“Things haven’t gotten better,” said Christian Ferry, a Republican who was Sen. John McCain’s deputy campaign manager in the 2008 presidential race. “And it certainly hasn’t gotten better in Florida. He’s got some big challenges to explain how it is that his economic messages, his economic plan is improving the situation in Florida for Floridians who are still struggling.”

For all the troubles, Republicans acknowledge it won’t be easy defeating Obama.

“The pendulum swings so fast now,” said Tallahassee-based GOP strategist David Johnson. “You can’t underestimate that guy. You do so at your peril.”

Plus, he added, “he’ll have the powers to come down here on that big blue plane, and that big blue plane excites people.”

Democrats hope that the GOP wave of 2010 is dissipating. They’re betting that voters will be turned off by the conservative agenda pushed by Republicans in Florida and Washington.

How about he just move somewhere outside the United States?

Wait, they probably don’t really want him there either. He can’t balance a checking account.

Starting at the voting booth, I’ll be happy to help him pack.

florida folks should worry about obama visiting….seems like every time this guy stops in to visit a factory or restaruant the business is closed within weeks if not days. no one with an ounce of brains would vote for this guy again….unless they’re hoping for 20% unemployment, even more loss of value of their homes, more devalueation of the american dollar, more wars (he has 4 now!) and a total colapse of the american economy.

If this simple plan was enacted our economy would turn around on a dime, foreclosures would end and the world economy would begin to recover.
If congress and the president were to have a window period of 0% capital gains tax on any real estate purchased it would get the investors to let loose of some of the trillions of dollars they are sitting on and buy property which will create jobs.

    * This should only be allowed for properties bought from the day it is passed moving forward for a window period of 3 months or 6 months or whatever. We should then analyze it and adjust the window as necessary. It should not be used for properties already owned because that would flood the market, we want people to want to buy instead of sell to create demand again so that prices will stabilize and consumers will begin to have confidence in their homes and begin to spend again to support the economy and create jobs.

    * This should qualify for any buyer of any property whether it be an investment, owner occupied or commercial. The goal is to get the big investors with their trillions of dollars of cash they have on the sidelines to start buying to stimulate the recovery and also to make it widespread so to have a quick effect. This will bring quick money into the treasury by quickly creating jobs and consumer confidence.

    * The new property purchased should have no restrictions on when you sell it, if sold in 1 day, 1 year 10 years or 100 years it should be exempt from capital gains

They don’t want their lifestyle changed by Obama politics. He won’t win Florida, Marc Rubio will help get the message out. Have faith in us Floridians !!!

I live in FL and I don’t know ANYBODY who supports Obama! Very few will even admit to voting for him.

Although, the media is doing EVERYTHING they can to blame everything on Rick Scott. He is cutting everything that he possibly can……must of them needed cutting. Just one example, there is an office building in Tallahassee the state was paying rent of $384,000 a month while the state owned offices that were empty! He moved them to that office and saved all of that money….and there were MANY offices like that we were wasting money on…..but no more….AND he had the prisoners do most of the moving of furniture ect. People who have state jobs are concerned about losing their job. I don’t want to see anyone lose their job…..but, cuts must be made. My sister may lose her job and I would hate to see that happen…..however, we have to do something to save the state and our country!

The Tea Pary and 912 Groups are very active here in FL.

Here in the town known for harboring Muhammed Atta you will find the majority of lemmings fawing over this embarrassment in chief! Even the city council is set up much like the definition of a Soviet:

      * A soviet is a system of councils that report to an apex council and implement a predetermined outcome, often by consensus, affecting a region or neighborhood.

      * Members of a soviet council are chosen by virtue of their willingness to comply with that outcome and their one-mindedness with the group.

      * Soviets are the operating mechanism of a government-controlled economy, whether it be socialism or government-corporate (”public-private”) partnerships.

Change agents are working with opportunists and other foolish people by coordinating government, business, NGO, and “non-profit” partners to implement a soviet system in your county, too.

Every stupid program this Prez put into place has been a total disaster. Can’t anyone see it? He paid out enormous amounts (like over $100,000+ per job cost) to get only a few jobs that paid slightly over min-wage. I’m not a high paid economist , but it doesn’t take one to understand simple math. He bailed out banks, the Fanny Mae/Freddie Mac debacle, GM should have reorganized and come back on it’s own; look at ‘em now, still a failure. This man is a reverse Midas, everything he touches comes out crappy. He’s in bed with GE and their kill America plans.
Folks, look, see, listen and realize this Country is going broke with this man at the helm. We are close to being devalued again. There go all the food stamps & welfare programs. No money left, get it? No money left for anything, even the freebee lifestyles you expect to continue. Nope, they go with the rest of it, down the drain. Then we’ll have civil unrest.

Its not that libs are shallow thinkers, they think high and grand thoughts, they just don’t think of consequences. They try to minimize consequences: “Oh, you mean I didn’t pay enough tax – it was just an oversight and I’ll pay them right away (no penalties or interest just the back taxes a la bonnie fwank, charlie wrangler, and others too numerous to name”. They are bothered and, dare I say, hate conservatives/libertarians because we consider consequences before making decisions. Notwithstanding bill clinton’s progressive lineage, he was, ultimately, a narcissistic pragmatist; favoring adoration above ideology. Unfortunately, many repubs have the same mindset: spend money we (the US) don’t have – let someone else clean up the mess later (and odumbo, [BIG EAR!] and all, can’t seem to find the mop – because a few principled conservatives are hiding it. I guess I’ve blathered on long enough, I hope it makes sense.

The more people the Obama administration can get on the government roles (ie, food stampls, housing assistance, free everything), than the more likely the people will vote not necessarily for Obama, but so they can continue their entitlement lifestyle. Free, free everything is a very underhanded way of trapping people into government control. That is why Obama is so against job creation, because with job creation comes independence from the government, and more power to vote the way they would like to without fear of losing their homes, or food, clothing, etc. The progressive agenda is very much like communism.

The Republicans are just a “slower acting version” (by virtue of the fact they never stop, much less slow down the left’s implemented agenda) of the Democratic party when it comes to the progressive agenda. OBAMA, after all the damage he’s done to our precious USA, should have a serious problem in EVERY STATE…not just FLORIDA!!!

WHO else can you name in history has been involved in 4 wars, has over-ridden CONGRESS; has had COMMUNISTS as his closest Advisors (I used to have to duck under desks at the very world Communist) ; who tells BRAZIL ‘we’ll be their best customers’ while given them OUR MONEY to drill in OUR WATERS ?? Who else insults our closest Allies (UK and ISRAEL) at every opportunity; who else has MUSLIM PRAYER Dinners but can’t even mention Christian Day of Prayer? WHO else has run OUR DEBT UP MORE THAN ALL THE INCURRED DEBT FROM ALL THE ADMINISTRATIONS FROM GEORGE WASHINGTON UNTIL NOW?????
THIS Creep is a MUSLIM; he’s a SOCIALIST; he’s a LIAR; he’s a ONE-WORLDER; HE did not grow up in America, I don’t give a damn where he was born…Mars maybe… HE’S a punk who has been schooled and polished by backers (just like they did in E. Europe) to be their puppet so they can rape, rob, control AMERICA.

ANYONE who votes for OBAMA in 2012 (if he’s not impeached before then) isn’t worth the powder to blow them to hell. THIS IS NO AMERICAN, folks…this is the MUSLIM TROJAN HORSE as I’ve been saying since 2008. Even I didn’t know how TRUE that was!!! This is our LAST CHANCE to save this country from these immoral Atheistic, Socialistic, Islamic Cultist Dictators. Seriously.

The Sentiment in 2012 will be “Obama has failed and has no plan on the table that has any chance of succeeding. Let’s give someone else a try. Anybody else.”

The issue isn’t even what caused the crisis anymore because every prominent Democrat including Obama and Clinton voted for every economic decision that got us here.

What is the issue is that Obama obviously has no solution to get us out of this except for Government Spending. It has been proven that spending by the government did not provide ANY growth in the private sector and those private sector companies that saw influxes of cash were coincidently tied to union jobs almost exclusively or local governments spent their money on shoring up union jobs for Teachers, Firefighters or Policeman. All may be necessary at some level, but they do nothing to drive the economy or any growth.

Even if Obama’s “driving into the ditch argument” made any sense, he obviously does not know how to get us out of the ditch or even how or where to drive the car when it does get out. All we will have is a broken car and a leader that does not have enough real life experience to call for a mechanic or use Google Maps to find directions. His analogy would have made more sense if he said:

      1) We called a tow truck driver and he really knew what he was doing and he said we could be out of that ditch in 15 minutes. (Rather than the visual of Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi pushing the car out of the ditch or trying to lift it).

Obama has a problem in all 57 states.”

It is sad how poorly educated people are easily led by morons on tv. There IS 57 states in the Country known as the “United States”. Any fool should know this. It is taught in ALL schools. Let me help the slackers understand. The country the “United States” is comprised of 2 distinct nations. One is republican under the Constitution comprised of the 50 States of America. The Other is Democratic (Art 1:8:17) and operates outside the Constitution and is comprised of “D.C., Guam,Puerto Rico,Virgin Islands,American Samoa, Palua, Micronesia.

The former is called the “united States of America” while the latter is called the “United States” and they are 2 different nations with their own citizens, respectively “American” and “US” and there is no requirement that you be a “US citizen”…

Together they form the 57 states to which Obama refereed. They ALL participate in Presidential selection. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24839059/ns/politics-decision_08/t/nominating-not-voting-president/

If Ron Paul is considered unelectable and does not win the Republican nomination, I will be voting for Obama. I’d much rather he makes things worse, so we can get a real candidate into office in 2016 then to elect some RINO, and who ever receives the nomination WILL be a RINO because all of you are so predictable. I‘d rather let Obama keep ruining the country so we can have REAL change instead of playing this back and forth games we’ve been playing for decades.

If a regular Republican wins, it’ll just be more of the same. And the left will give them three whole days to fix the mess which they’ll just end up screwing up even more. At which point the Democrats will sweep through in the mid terms and get the presidency back in 2016. I’m tired of this game.

We need to stop thinking inside the box. We’ve elected GWB, didn’t turn out so well. Now you’ll try to get another GWB into office, nothing will change. If not Ron Paul, someone of similar principles. Perhaps an Obama win in 2012 will set up for a victory for Rand Paul in 2016. Perhaps it’ll be worth the wait…..

I just wrote one of my Senators and asked how much time we have before Obama rounds up the right-wingers, conservatives, Christians, those who uphold the Constitution, veterans, and others considered by Napolitano to be “domestic terrorists” and puts them in 800+ Fema camps. The FEMA camps were supposed to be for “illegal immigrants,” but that can’t be true because we have had open borders for thirty years.

I ended it with a comment to the effect, “You know that if the Senate passes the Small Arms Treaty, that it will be all over for the United States, don’t you?”

Florida is mostly run on tourism – and some agriculture – tomatoes, watermelons, and citrus – but Tourism and Mickey Mouse are the the real losers while gas prices still hover near $4/gal. and the economy is in the doldrums where people are scared to spend what money they do have on long trips. TSA keeps tourism down – as long as they run rough shod over people traveling. Most of the busing coming to Florida is full of Mexicans coming to look for work in fields and groves – no tourists. It’s also hot, dry and some of Florida is on fire, so the air is full of smoke. Cities are still charging bed tax to support their failing efforts at advertising. Now we have Obama coming to strip even more money from his socialist party constituents. Gas prices are 30 cents higher than at the GA border. Florida may have no income tax – but it taxes so much more further ripping off tourists. Who wants to stand in hot 90º blazing heat, long lines, sunburn, $5 ice cream cones, just to say they been to mickey mouse world?

Thank you for the insult filled tirade.

In general discourse, when people talk about states, they are referring to one or more of the 50 states of the United States of America.

Of course, anyone who has seen the actual clip of what Obama said knows that he simply misspoke and actually meant to say 47 states, since he then went on to say he has one more to visit and could not make it to Alaska and Hawaii. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpGH02DtIws )

Also, Washington D.C. is the nation’s capitol. Guam, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, and the U.S. Virgin Islands are unincorporated territories. Palau and the Federated States of Micronesia are both sovereign island nations. None of these are considered states.

Jeb? Sorry, but you are wrong there. Christ was the Governor. Jeb was a potential GOP Presidential candidate without holding an office.
That being said. Housing is an issue because of insurance rates, second homes, and people trying to “flip” houses there. Unemployment is because of the housing crash there. I don’t see anyone that is sitting in “good” position to win Florida easily, except maybe Cain, with the Fair Tax, which is the last hope for our declining dollar.

and MIBUGNU2, that list is BY FAR not “everything he’s done.” His policies have created more private sector jobs than IN ALL BUSH’S YEARS in office! Your taxes are the lowest they’ve been in over 50 YEARS! How about expansion of children’s health ins. and insuring more Americans, tax credits for new home buyers, Lilly Ledbetter (fair pay act for women,) VOLUNTARY disclosure of the names of the visitors to the WH, new hate crimes legislation, stopped torture of detainees, expansion of food safety, tobacco regulation, student loan/WallStreet/credit card reforms, lgst investments in clean energy and education EVAH, the stimulus (lgst taxcut EVAH and prevented another GREAT DEPRESSION,) improvemts in the GIBill, the long-overdue elimination of DADT, he put the cost of the wars ON THE BOOKS, signing the START treaty, and the largest elimination of AlQaeda operatives EVER, inc. Osama AND HIS THUMB DRIVES!
Granted, there are things left, some of them on your list, like CLOSE GITMO, immigration and energy reforms, get our troops home, GET RID OF BUSH TAX CUTS!! And granted, there’s 20-some-odd% of Americans who HATE to see WallStreet regulated…but the majority of people believe that MILLIONAIRES DON’T CREATE A ROBUST ECONOMY, A ROBUST ECONOMY CREATES MILLIONAIRES!
