Joe Scarborough Confronts Columnist Over Calling Santorum’s Handling of His Baby’s Death ‘Weird’

Last night, the Blaze reported that Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Eugene Robinson appeared on MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow to deliver his assessment of the way Rick Santorum and his wife mourned their stillborn child. He called the response to the death “very weird.”

(Related: Eugene Robinson Tells Rachel Maddow That Rick Santorum‘s Stillborn Baby Story Is ’Very Weird’)

Joe Scarborough Confronts Eugene Robinson on Santorum Baby Comments

This morning, following his controversial comments, Robinson was confronted by “Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough. While Mediaite dubbed the conversation “a remarkably heated back-and-forth” dialogue, it’s perhaps more accurately described as a cordial, yet confrontational, explanation-seeking interview.

Here’s how Scarborough launched into the discussion:

“Do you think you may have gone overboard a little bit in your criticisms of Santorum? We haven’t talked about it. I’m not setting you up for anything. I was taken aback by what you said. My wife likes you very much, couldn’t believe you said it.”

During his discussion with the MSNBC host, Robinson seemed somewhat apologetic for the way in which he discussed Santorum’s handling of the death.

“I certainly didn’t mean to offend anybody, especially Mr. Santorum,” he told Scarborough. “But it was in a discussion of his views, and, you know, which I consider extreme, and Santorum himself who is a cultural — culture warrior extraordinaire, whose faith — and we all appreciate someone of deep faith — but it is — it is extremely deep, and it’s a kind of faith that some people, I think, are going be… if not surprised by… at least want to know more about.”

When asked if he wished he hadn’t said it, Roninson responded, “I wish I hadn’t said it that way, Joe.”

Watch the dialogue, below:

You may recall that liberal commentator Alan Colmes made similar comments, then apologized to Santorum and his wife just days ago.

Matthew 8:21 And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.
8:22 But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead.

Then I suppose for me it is weird the thing Santorum did. And for Santorum to claim he did it because of Faith, is because he surely must not know his Christian faith. Or it must be because his spirit is not alive.

      From the Mayo Clinic:
Create memories of your baby. You may want to name your baby. You may also … You might also ask the hospital staff to make handprints or footprints, or have the baby christened or blessed. You might even swaddle the baby or take photos with him or her.”

From the Association for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome:
“The family will be offered the opportunity to see, touch, and hold their infant/child or to
perform other actions to express their feelings in an unhurried, sensitive manner that is in
keeping with their cultural beliefs, values and practices”

This is what is done. These acts are NOT a denial of death, but a recognition of a life that was as real as yours and mine. That is why people like Colmes are repelled by it.

You are pulling out scriptures out of context again to make some sort of weird point. Of course Santorum knows his dead infant’s spirit is not in the body.

Like the other poster said, this is a way for the parents to grieve the life of their baby.

Eliasim – in the verse you quoted (as with any Bible verse), you have to consider the context and the audience (who is the speaker addressing?). In this case, Jesus was speaking to one of the 12. I don’t believe Jesus was opposed to believers burying their deceased loved ones, especially an innocent child. Do you? Jesus himself was laid to rest and allowed Himself to be anointed in preparation for his impending death and burial. Peace.

Now what in your pea brain does that mean.?The dead will come out of their graves and bury his father? Let us see Eliasim, was Santorum called to follow Christ in his ministry? It’s too bad that most Liberals seem to think they don’t need God, because they are God. I think they had ought to rethink some of those thoughts. My wife and I lost a baby many years ago. He only lived about eight hours and with today’s medicine would have lived. We morned him and in our morning came closer to each other. Don’t be so crass as to criticize some one else whom have lost a baby or a loved one! From what I understand what Bill and Hillary Clinton did with their 20 hour old miscarried or stillborn child (prior to the birth of Chelsea) was not any different. According to reports, they kept the childs body overnight and slept with it. Where was Robinson when that occurred or did someone of his own political persuasion make him aware of the fact and now he has decided to attempt to save face and that it might not be so ” very weird” after all. He and Colmes are air heads.

I’ve been involved with labor and delivery for 20 years. It is very important for parents to hold and visit with their stillborns – part of the mourning process. If parents didn’t want to they were not forced, but we still cleaned the body, wrapped it in blankets and took pictures and footprints for the parents to look at when they felt ready.
You don’t run out the back and first bury the dead…. as Eliasim has said.
There is a time to mourn… and siblings of the deceased should also be given time to see and make peace with the passing of a family member. It helps prevent the imagination to make the “dead baby” into some kind of monster. If children (even parents) don’t see the baby, the imagination takes over.
I’m going to guess they didn’t take it home to “play with it” or “kind of sleep with it” as Roninson and Colmes had said.
Enough already – They lost a baby. Leave it alone….!

Santorum is a lunatic, but there are plenty of things to go after him on that affect us all rather than something like this.

I would rather criticize Santorum on being a corporatist. He believes in corporate welfare and public-private partnerships.

In his 2005 book “It Takes A Family” he explicitly states that he is a big government conservative. It’s a contradiction in terms. Santorum doesn’t trust people to run their own lives. He calls it “radical individualism.”

Santorum supported tripling the size of the Dept. of Education. He voted for increasing the size of Medicare greatly with the 2002 Medicare prescription drug give-away.

Santorum was a gung-ho supported of K Street while he was a senator.

Santorum is basically Duke Nukem on the foreign policy front. He has no problem with nation-building and propping up tyrants that do the bidding of the U.S. government. He also supports foreign-aid enthusiastically. He likes to call this idiocy patriotism.

Santorum has no problem with the U.S. government’s unconstitutional monetary system. He thinks that the FED can centrally plan the economy to good effect. He is not a free market man.

Santorum also ignores the Constitution on issues like drugs, marriage, and abortion. They are state issues. If he wants them to be federal issues, he needs to help pass a constitutional amendment. Big government R’s ignore the Constitution when it is convenient just like big government progressives.

“Morning Joe”, as he calls himself, should also have called out the so-called host who interviewed Robinson, Rachel Maddow, as she sat with her usual immature laugh and smirk, as Robinson attacked Santorum for his behavior following the death of his child. What Maddow should have said to Robinson attacking Santorum on the issues and his acquaintances is fine, attacking him for something so personal, was and is disgusting. It’s too bad that the very personal scrutiny that Robinson and Maddow decided was okay for Santorum, but it was strictly verboten, when it came to the Democrat candidates for President during the 2008 election. Here we go…the left have been trying to co-opt religion, faith, and God in general- for pure political gain. Sure, there are people on the right who do that, but what the left don’t get, is that the majority of conservatives who stand on their faith, actually have faith.

So now that someone like Santorum, a man of faith, looks like he’s making gains in the polls- they will drop the faith game, and play the “too much faith is weird” game. When the left see someone who actually stands on their faith- lives by it, they don’t understand it…because they lack it.

Stand in the flame of truth my brothers and sisters…invited the left in, the flame of truth will send them walking, or simply incinerate their arguments.

Isnt’ the co-opting of religion for political gain exactly what the Republican party does?

Santorum is a statist. He hates free markets. He has stated in the past that he is a big government Republican.

He ignores the Constitution whenever it gets in the way of his big government ideas, which is frequently.

He voted to triple the size of the Dept. of Education. He voted for Medicare Part D–a massive expansion of a socialist, unconstitutional program.

Santorum led the charge in the Senate for Bush’s big government schemes.

Santorum, Gingrich, and Romney wrap their statism in the language of liberty and free markets. They are conmen.

Where are the trillion dollar cuts from Santorum? What unconstitutional govt. departments has he proposed eliminating?

Why does Duke Nukem support a Wilsonian foreign policy? He thinks the U.S. government can centrally plan the economy and society domestically. He thinks it should also seek to centrally plan the world. How is this conservative?

I really think that many skygod worshippers would support an avowed socialist so long as he appealed to evangelicals.

It’s mystifying to me that some think that a big government guy is a conservative.

Santorum operated comfortably inside of the New Deal/Progressive era structure when he was a Senator. He never challenged it. That’s because he is a statist.

Marriage, drugs, and abortion are not powers given to the federal govt. They are state issues.

If you are a Christian, you are supposed to allow the Holy Spirit to dwell within you, to keep you from acting like sinners act. But I tell you, it is hard to tell a Christian Republican from a non-Christian Republican because they all act the same. You have not been paying attention.

Most folks around here don’t really care if you want to enter in to a “Union” with whomever you choose.

The real issue is with calling it a “Marriage”, which it is not, by any definition.

Equally disturbing is your need to indoctrinate our children with your beliefs.

UNBOTHERED, it’s true that some people do and/or say unGodly things in the name of Christianity. I am just suggesting that it is easy to interpret your comments as a slam against Christianity. I hope that’s not what you were trying to convey… because many people (particularly those who are biased against religion, for whatever reason) judge Christianity not by what the Bible teaches, but rather, by the behavior and words of humans who claim to be Christians. I.E. I hope you can make it clear, for example, that the words and behavior of the members of Westboro Baptist are a reflection of their own character and not a reflection of Bible teachings.

I’m sorry but I have to believe that the vast majority of people would think bringing home a dead ‘baby’ and sleeping with it is more than just a little odd.

That is not what happened. The baby died at the hospital – the grieving parents slept with the baby between them at the hospital and took the child home the next day so the children would have an opportunity to know the sibling that passed away. Grief is personal, how one deals with it is different with each person. I don’t think this is different than people who kiss their loved one good bye at the viewing (something I would not do – have my love one displayed dead in their coffin). When my husband was killed in a car accident I did not want an open casket – for one my children were so young and I did not want them to remember their father that way. My in-laws, however, did and I allowed them to have a private viewing. Perhaps we should stop trying to judge personal decisions in grief, trying to smear, in my estimation, a candidate on something that has no bearing on whether he or she would make a good president and actually look at their positions and policies. Shame on those who resort to the level Robinson and Colmes sunk to.

      @SIMPLE

This is copy and pasted from elsewhere on this page.

Yes, everybody grieves differently, but that the Santorum family put this story out there is even weirder than the story itself.

The Republican Party is vetting the candidates, which if the Dems had done their job in 2008 we would not have the POS president that we have now.

Your ignorance is amazing and is only topped by your political lack of articulation. Barry O will loose by a landslide. Wait and see. And why did you bring up the Tea Party? What do they have to do with Santorum’s child? Since you have no argument, no accomplishments, no unifying, no momentum, all you can resort to is name calling. Guess what? That won’t work. The American people are way too smart for that. In the end you will lose, no matter who is nominated.

Since you are criticizing another’s grammar, I suggest you look at your own writing first. Prizes (plural) does not have an apostrophe.

Whereas @SimpleTruths error was likely just a typo, your mistake, which you committed twice, clearly indicates you don’t know when to use an apostrophe.

      @WBOEMBER
That is absolutely the truth! I could not agree with you more.

      @SIMPLETRUTHS
As for you my friend, I hate to give you the facts, but godless liberals like you are delusional in their thinking. Your confidence in your claim of moral superiority is bit overstated and inflated. You fool! You can’t distinquish the difference because you are blinded and guided by selfish moral relativism. A godless society, such as your prophets envision, wouldn’t remain in existence for very long.

Think about it for minute! Without God there is no absolute truth or morals to adhere to. Just like Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens and others, we are incapable of comprehending what true morality is. If left alone, our selfish desires and personal interests will, in fact, dictate and mold the very idea of “morals” that we espouse. Every whim of thought, regardless of the rationale, logic or level of intellect we pride ourselves with, will eventually lead us to construct fleeting moral frameworks.

I challenge any atheist to demonstrate how such insanity, chaos, and lunacy is possible!
