‘Talk About Jaws, This Is the Real Deal!’: Great White Shark Circles Fishing Boat Off Oahu Coast

YouTube
A pair of fishermen had an encounter they’re unlikely to forget anytime soon when a great white shark circled their boat off the coast of Oahu, Hawaii.
According to Honolulu ABC affiliate KITV, Addison Toki and Dominick Gaballo were commercial fishing about five miles off the coast of Oahu Thursday. They had just hauled in a 300-pound marlin when Toki spotted the shark near the back of the boat.
“As it got closer and saw just the size and features, we knew it was a great white,” said Gaballo told the station.
Estimating it to be about 15-feet long, they said the shark circled their boat for nearly an hour. Figuring they needed to capture it on video, they pulled out a camera and started filming.
“Talk about Jaws, this is the real deal right here!” Toki says on the video.

Phrases like “Watch this!” or “One more time…” “What if I did this…” are usually something said before accidents.
They had no rifle in their boat. Dumb.

Posted on January 15, 2012 at 5:35pmYou don’t know what you’re talking about, you know nothing about fishing in Hawaii! First of all, how do you know they didn’t have a gun on the boat? Why would they need the gun the shark was not being aggressive? They were perfectly safe in what appeared to be at least a 25′ boat. Great Whites are protected animals and they were 8 miles from shore, nobody swims there. I live in Oahu and those guys looked like seasoned local fishermen, which means they spend more tine on the water than on dry land. People like you give hunters and fishermen a bad name.

Posted on January 16, 2012 at 12:12am@PovertySucks – You and fact check are so wrong on this. It says right on the KITV news video, which is the ABC affiliate in Hawaii, that the video was shot and the incident occurred near Yokohama Bay, which is in Waianae which IS ON OAHU. I am from Oahu (Kaneohe Boy) and I have been to that bay a quite a few times growing up. Looks like FactCheck needs to do a little more FACT CHECKING.

Posted on January 16, 2012 at 4:11pmYou do not need firearms while fishing. You do not need to shoot a shark. The easiest way to stay out of a sharks mouth is to leave the shark in the water. When you get to the dock with your dead fish, never stick your hands in its mouth, it just may not be as dead as you think it is. Many “dead” sharks have bitten people. Just stay away from the end that has teeth, and you will be ok. Let me repeat, you do not need to shoot a shark. If you practice catch and release, how do you return it unharmed if you shoot it? Shooting seems counter productive to me.

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 7:53am@Poverty sucks…Yokohama bay and Kaena Point are near each other and both are on Oahu. Went to Kaena point a lot when I was a kid to camp with the family in the late 70′s early 80′s. Which also scares me as I used to go out swimming way far when we camped there so if that had been around when i was in the water it would have chomped my ass garenz ballbarenz. This picture shows that they are very near each other – http://www.flickr.com/photos/96374913@N00/1807769531/

Our family used to camp out at Kaena Point in summers in the late 70′s early 80′s. I used to swim real far out back then so if that bugga had been in the water then, I would have had my okole chomped Garenz Ballbarenz

Posted on January 15, 2012 at 2:51pmI so miss Pidgin English. I was born and raised in Kaneohe on Oahu, and it is good to hear it. Although these guys are speaking less pidgin than I would expect from two mokes. The reason why it is so amazing for them is that we never got great Whites down in Hawaii before. The water is too warm. However, with the last El Nino that has brought a lot of fish to out waters that we never had before. I remember the El Nino in 82 was such a big deal was that we started to see a lot of fish more indigenous to the waters around Japan than Hawaii. Although the University of Hawaii Subs caught video of a huge white in more open ocean in between Oahu and Kauai a few years ago believed to be one that the other scientists had videos and studied off the coast of San Diego. But with so many people who surf, boogie board and body board there, if they are now going to be in Hawaiian waters that could present a problem.

Posted on January 15, 2012 at 6:38pmkabookieslap; This is the first time I’ve heard what you call Pidgin English. I was born and raised in South Louisiana and I was amazed at how similar “Pidgin English” is to the “Cajun English” that I’m used to hearing. If you’re ever in the vicinity of Lake Charles to Homa Louisiana you’ll pick up on that. Must be something about those who live by fishing or working the swamps?

Posted on January 15, 2012 at 4:27pmNope, wrong…”Paulies” would say this is freedom in action, no government intervention and free market. The fisherman got the marlin first and were not forced to redistribute it to the shark (like the democrat commies would have) and nobody preemptively struck the threatening shark like the warmongering Santorumites would want. You are either a free man or a slave, most of you seem to like your servitude.

Posted on January 16, 2012 at 4:04pmi’m sorry how does watching a shark checking out 2 guys and a boat bring about a political debate?
i really dont understand the leap of olympic mental gymnastics your brain made a correlation to for this article. i see a video, made by to guys, filming a predator in its natural habital investigating a foreign object in its hunting grounds that abducted a potential meal possibly hoping to still get a meal, and you see a means of starting an arguement about something that has absolutely no relevence pretaining to what’s going on…
i cant see the punch line in this other than your statement in and of itself.

How many people are out in the woods and actually see a bear up close and personal? Not that many compared to how many are on the ocean or in the woods. But when it does happen it’s more than likely a once in a lifetime experience.
