Obama Admin Mandates Religious Employers Cover Contraception Cost, Catholic Bishops Furious
The Catholic Bishops of the United States are reportedly furious over what they call the “literally unconscionable” decision by the Obama Administration to require that contraception be included in virtually all health plans provided by religious-affiliated institutions to their employees.
The announcement means that the mandate and its narrow exemption will not change. Rather, there will be a delay in enforcement against some employers.
“In effect, the president is saying we have a year to figure out how to violate our consciences,” said Cardinal-designate Timothy M. Dolan, archbishop of New York and president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
Dolan added, “To force American citizens to choose between violating their consciences and forgoing their healthcare is literally unconscionable. It is as much an attack on access to health care as on religious freedom. Historically this represents a challenge and a compromise of our religious liberty.”
PR Newswire adds:
The HHS rule requires that sterilization and contraception — including controversial abortifacients — be included among “preventive services” coverage in almost every healthcare plan available to Americans. “The government should not force Americans to act as if pregnancy is a disease to be prevented at all costs,” added Cardinal-designate Dolan.
At issue, the U.S. bishops and other religious leaders insist, is the survival of a cornerstone constitutionally protected freedom that ensures respect for the conscience of Catholics and all other Americans.
“This is nothing less than a direct attack on religion and First Amendment rights,” said Franciscan Sister Jane Marie Klein, chairperson of the board at Franciscan Alliance, Inc., a system of 13 Catholic hospitals. “I have hundreds of employees who will be upset and confused by this edict. I cannot understand it at all.”
“The Obama administration has now drawn an unprecedented line in the sand,” Dolan said. “The Catholic bishops are committed to working with our fellow Americans to reform the law and change this unjust regulation. We will continue to study all the implications of this troubling decision.”
As AP reports, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius conceded that nonprofit institutions such as church-affiliated hospitals, colleges and social service agencies will have one additional year to comply with the requirement, issued in regulations under President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul.
“I believe this proposal strikes the appropriate balance between respecting religious freedom and increasing access to important preventive services,” Sebelius said in a statement.
Yet the concession was unlikely to stop a determined effort by opponents to block or overturn the rule. If they fail, some predicted that religious employers would simply drop coverage for their workers, opting instead to pay fines to the federal government under the health care law.
“Never before has the federal government forced individuals and organizations to go out into the marketplace and buy a product that violates their conscience,” said Dolan. “This shouldn’t happen in a land where free exercise of religion ranks first in the Bill of Rights.”
Officials said the administration’s ruling was carefully considered, after reviewing more than 200,000 comments from interested parties and the public. The one-year extension, they said, responds to concerns raised by religious employers about making adjustments. Administration officials stressed that individual decisions about whether or not to use birth control, and what kind, remain in the hands of women and their doctors.

For decades, lobbies and special interests have ruled Capitol Hill, with PACs effectively steering the outcome of every major political campaign by injecting money and buying influence. Now we find out that Texas Congressman and GOP candidate Ron Paul has been targeted by a new breed of PAC, this time with foreign backing.
Ron Paul is the only GOP candidate who is not overtly ‘pro-Israel’ in the popular neoconservative sense. On January 13, in the run-up to the pivotal South Carolina GOP primary, the Emergency Committee for Israel, run by neoconservative thinker William Kristol, released an ad in which its Director Gary Bauer makes a plea to voters – not endorsing any candidate, rather, telling conservatives that they must reject Congressman Ron Paul as their GOP candidate, deriding his foreign policy views with respect to America’s ‘special relationship’ with Israel, and fighting the War on Terror – concluding that, “We can do better than Ron Paul”.

Therefore, it is in direct conflict with the first amendment and so unlawful. Posted on January 21, 2012 at 2:11pmWhile I can’t swear this is a true fact, some are saying that the Obama administration plans to introduce a sterilant into the water supply of red leaning voting districts. They are going to claim that the chemical compound is good for the enamel layer of your teeth, but the real consequence would be a reduced fertility rate in those districts. The long term effect would be a shift in the demographics toward the left. Diabolical, if true.

I guess the idea there is that a couple should only have sex if they are willing to have another child. Otherwise they shouldn’t have sex. With all due respect to the Catholic religion, that doesn’t make sense to me. In my view, a couple may want to have sex but not want to have another child. Do you understand my logic?
If you don’t want birth control, you don’t have to get it. It’s not forced on you.

The primary purposes of marital relations are procreation and spousal unity (babies and bonding), but that does not mean that the husband and wife are not supposed to derive pleasure from their marital relations. Although pleasure is not a purpose of sex, it is important to fulfilling the purposes of sex.
God gave humans the capacity to enjoy food and sex in order to encourage them to fulfill the purposes of those human needs. A moral problem occurs only when deriving pleasure from food and sex is put above or in the place of its intended purpose. Someone who eats solely for pleasure, without regard for the needs of his body, abuses the privilege of eating. In the same way, someone who has sex solely for pleasure, without regard for its intended purposes of babies and bonding, abuses the privilege of sex.
The Catholic Church recommends Natural Family Planning. At its core, Natural Family Planning (NFP) is really learning about this language of the sexual powers by observing, recording and interpreting the bodily signs of human fertility. In other words, NFP is fertility awareness, the knowledge of a couple’s fertility, and is a means of reading the body’s signs of fertility and infertility. Applying this knowledge through the Sympto-Thermal Method (STM) of NFP, which CCL teaches, is over 99% effective in postponing pregnancy.

Posted on January 20, 2012 at 8:57pmProviding healthcare that provides someone with the opportunity to CHOOSE to possibly use contraceptives seems too many causal agents removed for religiously conscientious individuals to plausibly argue that their beliefs or “moral integrity” has been compromised as though they were implicated in the person’s decision to use contraception, because they had provided that person (favored their character enough to do so in fact) with employment, a salary and a health insurance plan (that they chose among several) that happened to include contraception coverage (as most were required to in compliance with a law, not any decision of the church) that that individual then chose to use.
Really? That’s a ridiculous level of extension of moral implication. Do these same people agonize over whether or not the EXISTENCE of homosexual or extramarital heterosexual sexual relationships occur completely independent their presence or observation implicates them morally in the act? Because they imagine they OUGHT to have the power to stop that act? That’s a dangerous line of reasoning to pursue.
I don’t see what substantiates the threat to conscience–we might as well shut down the contraceptive industry for their sake.

Posted on January 20, 2012 at 10:18pmFor starters, the Catholic church in question doesn’t offer the plan–they pay some insurer for the coverage of their employee’s choice–so the employee first has to choose a plan that HAPPENS to cover contraceptives (even though they may have reasons completely unrelated to its coverage thereof for picking the plan, and no intent to use that coverage), then ALSO has to pick to USE the coverage. That’s THREE LEVELS OF AGENCY removed the church is themselves from their employee’s decision to use contraceptives. First, they don’t have control over what plans the insurer’s available and within their price range offer, second they don’t have control over (and therefore responsibility for) plan their employee chooses, and third they don’t have control over whether their employee chooses to use birth control, regardless of whether or not it’s covered by the plan they pay for as part of the employee’s benefits.

Is this what our Founding Fathers created our country for? To be filled with people too discouraged to stand up and act? The reason Clinton wasn’t removed was because the Senate acquitted him. He was impeached by the House. Regardless of whether Obama is removed, my point is that we cannot sit around and let him get away with taking our liberties inch by inch. Where do we draw the line? We need to let our House reps know we will not stand for this and that we demand demand that a resolution to impeach President Obama be filed with the House Judiciary Committee for the President’s threat and disregard to the United States Constitution. Believe it or not, our congressional representatives are ELECTED officials and WE THE PEOPLE are their bosses. This was proven last November when we FIRED a bunch of them. For a good socialist government to exist there can be neither family nor church. This is just another attack, among many, where they hope some will stick. I would also not conform to the requirement and tell them to stuff it. There needs to be resistence to this overt attack against religious beliefs.

Posted on January 21, 2012 at 12:21amYes, it’s also a way to control the population. Who knows what could be put into the birth control pills and drugs and what effects they will have on the girls with fertility down the road.

Posted on January 20, 2012 at 8:33pmThe God of Gov has spoken. Of course this is a violation of the 1st Amendment but its been dead for a long long time. The God of Gov is Secular Humanism and Atheism all other churches must do as they are told by the Gov Religion of the ruling elite. As to not being allowed to prohibit the free practice of religion, does anyone think we can freely practice our religion? When will the Marxist, Liberal Catholic Bishops wake up to the long term destruction of everything by the Democratic Party they have long been supporting.

Posted on January 20, 2012 at 8:37pmBahhh, the Constitution is just a grocery list of little memes to be violated. Naturally, the first thing on the list should be checked off first.

Posted on January 20, 2012 at 8:45pmDid you really think that the Bishops with their social, peace and justice focus at all cost will change their minds and/or party affiliation? Have you ever thought of the USCCB and the Bishops as another form of another union – do you know where this is going? Where do you think the USCCB stands on Obama? Will they roll over on Obama’s ruling on contraception and take their medicine for social peace? You bet! And will they tell loyal to their Catholic tradition and magisterium to vote for him again? You bet!

Posted on January 20, 2012 at 8:31pmFor all of this separation of church and state the left wing loons are screaming about, there is an awful lot of state sticking it’s nose into the church. Somebody needs to live up to their claimed position. One church here beat the city a number of year back on just that claim.

Posted on January 20, 2012 at 8:28pmWhat a joke. I wonder if any democrats will scream separation of church and state on this one.
This President will be known as the worst in American history for his one-sided, selfish policies.

Posted on January 20, 2012 at 10:25pmYou beat me to it. How many Catholic Priests, etc. came out in support of this guy? The Supreme Court (unanimously) overturned the White House on who church’s can employ, so he is finding another way to stick it in their eye.
One would think they would wise up.

Posted on January 22, 2012 at 2:18pmWe have a big problem with liberals in the Church. They are not the majority and they do NOT represent Catholic teaching.
Notice how the Pope has been replacing the Bishops in the U.S. with VERY CONSERVATIVE men who are loyal to the Church.
Shame on Catholics who voted for Obama. Pro Life should always come first.
